Judging A Book By Its Cover: Using Lectin Microarrays To Identify How Glycosylation Is Regulated, John F. Rakus Dec 2012

Judging A Book By Its Cover: Using Lectin Microarrays To Identify How Glycosylation Is Regulated, John F. Rakus

Chemistry Faculty Research

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

Microfluidic Experiments Reveal That Antifreeze Proteins Bound To Ice Crystals Suffice To Prevent Their Growth, Yeliz Celik, Ran Drori, Natalya Pertaya-Braun, Aysun Altan, Tyler Barton, Maya Bar-Dolev, Alex Groisman, Peter L. Davies, Ido Braslavsky Dec 2012

Physics Faculty Research

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are a subset of ice-binding proteins that control ice crystal growth. They have potential for the cryopreservation of cells, tissues, and organs, as well as for production and storage of food and protection of crops from frost. However, the detailed mechanism of action of AFPs is still unclear. Specifically, there is controversy regarding reversibility of binding of AFPs to crystal surfaces. The experimentally observed dependence of activity of AFPs on their concentration in solution appears to indicate that the binding is reversible. Here, by a series of experiments in temperature-controlled microfluidic devices, where the medium surrounding ice …

Draft Genome Sequence For Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain Pao579, A Mucoid Derivative Of Pao381, T. Ryan Withers, Shannon L. Johnson, Hongwei D. Yu

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that establishes a chronic lung infection in individuals afflicted with cystic fibrosis. Here, we announce the draft genome of P. aeruginosa strain PAO579, an alginate-overproducing derivative of strain PAO381.

Encouraging The Heart, Sherry L. Early Phd, David Sleasman

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

Bowling Green State University’s Center for Leadership hosts workshops throughout the year for skill enhancement, reflection, and overall leadership efficacy. The student interaction we would like to share was as co-facilitators for a workshop based on Kouzes and Posner’s “Encouraging the Heart” principle from The Leadership Challenge.

The Reciprocal Cycle Of Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Matthew Cooney Dec 2012

The Reciprocal Cycle Of Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Matthew Cooney

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

The leadership development encounter we want to share has been ongoing for nearly six years. I met Matt Cooney after he returned from a study abroad experience in Mexico. I was hired as an assistant director and Matt asked me-"Who are you and why should I care?" A bit brazen, but forgivable. Once I told him about my experiences and why I was hired it was like at first sight. Matt and I connected instantly. Things got even more intense when I was his instructor for his internship and he had to be accountable to me online.

A Bijective Proof Of A Factorization Formula For Specialized Macdonald Polynomials, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese Dec 2012

A Bijective Proof Of A Factorization Formula For Specialized Macdonald Polynomials, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese

Mathematics Faculty Research

Let μ and ν = (ν 1, . . . , ν k ) be partitions such that μ is obtained from ν by adding m parts of sizer. Descouens and Morita proved algebraically that the modified Macdonald polynomials

H~μ(X;q,t)

satisfy the identity

H~μ=H~νH~(rm)

when the parameter t is specialize to an mth root of unity. Descouens, Morita, and Numata proved this formula bijectively when rν k and

r∈{1,2}.

This note gives a bijective proof of the formula for all rν k .

Predicting Risk For Adverse Outcomes Following Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta Phd Dec 2012

Predicting Risk For Adverse Outcomes Following Distal Radius Fracture, Saurabh Mehta Phd

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Some individuals remain at risk for adverse outcomes such as chronic wrist/hand pain, falls, and fall-related osteoporotic fractures after distal radius fracture (DRF) remain. This thesis includes five studies that were conducted to establish prediction rules or assessing the risk of these adverse outcomes following DRF.

The first manuscript outlines a theoretical framework (RACE - Reducing pain, Activating, Cognitive reshaping, Empowering) for managing the risk of adverse outcomes, mainly chronic pain, in individuals with DRF. The RACE is one of the first frameworks to suggest a risk-based management approach for individuals with DRF.

The Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) is a …
