Arab Muslim women were nearly twice as likely as Arab Muslim men to face verbal assaults in the three years following the 9/11 attacks. When these assaults occurred in public space, a woman wearing hijab (Muslim head scarf) was present more than 90 percent of the time. Women wearing hijab have been spit at, threatened, hit, and told to go home, even though many of these women were born in the United States.

The Importance Of Expectation Fulfillment On Domestic Violence Victims’ Satisfaction With The Police In The Uk, Amanda L. Robinson, Meghan S. Stroshine

Purpose – This paper seeks to investigate what victims of domestic violence expect police to do for them, and how these expectations subsequently influence their levels of satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach – Structured interviews with 222 victims of domestic violence were conducted by staff from an integrated community-based service delivery agency in Cardiff, Wales. Multivariate analyses were performed to reveal the factors that contribute to domestic violence victims' satisfaction with the police.

Findings – Consistent with the expectancy disconfirmation model, results indicate that the most important determinant of satisfaction is the extent to which victims' expectations about police behaviour and demeanour are …

Targeting Arab/Muslim/South Asian Americans: Criminalization And Cultural Citizenship, Louise Cainkar, Sunaina Maira

In this essay, we further explore the responses of Arab and South Asian Muslim communities to the War on Terror, and ask whether these responses reveal alliance-building and pan-ethnic identification. Do the targeted groups, now portrayed as monolithic, find solidarity with each other, and if so, what are the bases for their sense of affinity. These questions force us to consider the deeper issues of pan-ethnic and political affiliation that highlight quandaries at the core of Asian American studies: how does a pan-ethnic approach challenge or support the racial and cultural categories used by state and empire to subordinate and …
