Clinical Art Therapy And Hebrew Calligraphy: An Integration Of Practices, Debra Linesch Dec 2014

Clinical Art Therapy And Hebrew Calligraphy: An Integration Of Practices, Debra Linesch

Journal of Clinical Art Therapy

This paper explores the process of integrating two apparently disparate practices, clinical art therapy and the rendering of Hebrew calligraphy as religious ritual. A growing body of literature that supports this attempt at integration is briefly reviewed. Following this, an exploration of the potential integration is described, discussed and analyzed. The author’s own images are viewed as an example of an image making process that is developed from a faith tradition and informed by the understandings and values of clinical art therapy. The findings of the exploration suggest that art therapy understandings have the potential to illuminate and support many …

Repositioning Art Work From Patients Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa In A Gendered, Socio-Cultural Context: A Self-Reflective Study, Dafna Rehavia-Hanauer Dec 2014

Repositioning Art Work From Patients Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa In A Gendered, Socio-Cultural Context: A Self-Reflective Study, Dafna Rehavia-Hanauer

Journal of Clinical Art Therapy

This article, conceptualized within a post-structuralist, feminist approach to art therapy, addresses the role of visual images as a controlling constituting discourse significant to the formation of the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. As a core position this article argues for a change in the way art work created within the art therapy process by women who suffer from anorexia nervosa is interpreted and analyzed by art therapists. The article argues for an enhanced appreciation and critical analysis of gendered, social-cultural contextualization of visual images and recognition of how these forces have a role in directing women to enact behaviors of …

The Use Of Creative Art As A Strategy For Case Formulation In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Semra Karaca Phd, Nurhan Eren Dec 2014

The Use Of Creative Art As A Strategy For Case Formulation In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Semra Karaca Phd, Nurhan Eren

Journal of Clinical Art Therapy

Case formulation refers to the appraisal of the individual data and the treatment plan in terms of certain principles. In psychotherapy, case formulation is relevant for the recognition of conceptual and clinical tools, as well as for the evaluation of the therapeutic endeavor. Art work (painting) provides an effective tool for case formulation because it allows the individual to express his/her thoughts and emotions, which are prone to the influences of subconscious drives, conflicts, fears, and desires in a symbolic fashion. In this study, case formulation of a 31-year-old woman, who could not overcome her verbal and physical aggressive behaviors, …

Development And Validation Of The Hookup Motives Questionnaire (Hmq), Shannon R. Kenney, Andrew Lac, Justin F. Hummer, Joseph W. Labrie Dec 2014

Development And Validation Of The Hookup Motives Questionnaire (Hmq), Shannon R. Kenney, Andrew Lac, Justin F. Hummer, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

Despite the high prevalence rates and growing research on hooking up among college students, no multidimensional inventory exists in the literature to assess motivations for hooking up. In the current study, we report on the development and validation of the Hookup Motives Questionnaire (HMQ), designed to assess the various reasons for hooking up. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted using 2 samples of college students (Campus 1, N = 401; Campus 2, N = 367). Exploratory factor analysis was undertaken to explore the psychometric properties of an initial set of 25 items, and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to …

Astrophysical Tests Of Kinematical Conformal Cosmology In Fourth-Order Conformal Weyl Gravity, Gabriele U. Varieschi Dec 2014

Astrophysical Tests Of Kinematical Conformal Cosmology In Fourth-Order Conformal Weyl Gravity, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

In this work we analyze kinematical conformal cosmology (KCC), an alternative cosmological model based on conformal Weyl gravity (CG), and test it against current type Ia supernova (SNIa) luminosity data and other astrophysical observations. Expanding upon previous work on the subject, we revise the analysis of SNIa data, confirming that KCC can explain the evidence for an accelerating expansion of the Universe without using dark energy or other exotic components. We obtain an independent evaluation of the Hubble constant, H0 = 67:53 kms-1 Mpc-1, very close to the current best estimates. The main KCC and CG parameters are …

Examining The Efficacy Of A Brief Group Protective Behavioral Strategies Skills Training Alcohol Intervention With College Women, Shannon R. Kenney, Lucy Napper, Joseph W. Labrie, Matthew P. Martens Dec 2014

Examining The Efficacy Of A Brief Group Protective Behavioral Strategies Skills Training Alcohol Intervention With College Women, Shannon R. Kenney, Lucy Napper, Joseph W. Labrie, Matthew P. Martens

Psychological Science Faculty Works

College students’ use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS; e.g., determining not to exceed a set number of drinks, avoiding drinking games) is related to lower levels of alcohol consumption and problems. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a novel brief, single-session group PBS skills training intervention aimed at increasing college students’ use of PBS and reducing risky drinking and consequences. Participants (N = 226) were heavy-drinking incoming first-year college women randomized to either a PBS skills training intervention or study skills control condition. Participants attended a 45-min group session and completed online surveys pre- and postintervention (1 month …

Who Is Tending Their Garden? Edible Gardens As A Residential Landscaping Choice, Tenley M. Conway, Kyle Brannen Nov 2014

Who Is Tending Their Garden? Edible Gardens As A Residential Landscaping Choice, Tenley M. Conway, Kyle Brannen

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban residential yards collectively have a significant influence on urban ecosystem conditions. The growing body of research examining residential yards has explored landscaping preferences, presence of different landscape styles, general gardening activity, and the extent and management of lawn grass. To date home-based edible gardens have received little attention within this literature, while the urban agriculture literature that has primarily focused on community garden space, yet many households grown fruits and vegetables at home. This study explores residential (i.e. home-based) edible gardens in relation to household characteristics from the perspective of edible gardens representing one way urban households’ can allocate …

Use Of Urban Tree Canopy Assessments By Localities In The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Lele L. Kimball, P. Eric Wiseman, Susan D. Day, John F. Munsell Nov 2014

Use Of Urban Tree Canopy Assessments By Localities In The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Lele L. Kimball, P. Eric Wiseman, Susan D. Day, John F. Munsell

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban tree canopy (UTC) in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (CBW) provides numerous environmental, economic, and societal benefits. UTC assessments use remote sensing technology to deliver a comprehensive spatial snapshot of a locality’s existing UTC. Because UTC assessments delineate the extent and location of tree canopy cover in the context of other land covers (including plantable space), they are important for establishing tree canopy goals, creating and implementing strategies to achieve those goals, and monitoring progress. Over the past decade, UTC assessments have been completed for numerous localities in the CBW as a result of the Chesapeake Bay Program identifying UTC …

Sustainable Urban Park Systems, Dorothy C. Ibes Nov 2014

Sustainable Urban Park Systems, Dorothy C. Ibes

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Lack of multi-dimensional, substantive research on city park systems has undermined the potential role of these public amenities in advancing urban sustainability goals. This study informs holistic policy, planning, and management of parks to balance the multiple goals of sustainability region-wide. A vision for a sustainable urban park system is introduced, informed by multidisciplinary thought and theory. This vision is then operationalized in the development of a quantitative method that examines four key dimensions of sustainability—physical, environmental, socio-economic, and built—across a citywide urban park system. The approach can be customized for use in other cities, but is here applied to …

How Do Suburban Coyote Attacks Affect Residents’ Perceptions? Insights From A New York Case Study, William F. Siemer, Daniel J. Decker, James E. Shanahan, Heather A. Wieczorek Hudenko Nov 2014

How Do Suburban Coyote Attacks Affect Residents’ Perceptions? Insights From A New York Case Study, William F. Siemer, Daniel J. Decker, James E. Shanahan, Heather A. Wieczorek Hudenko

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Understanding the human dimensions of human-coyote conflicts in metropolitan areas has taken on greater importance as coyotes (Canis latrans) have established themselves as the top predator in many urban ecosystems across North America. Though uncommon, coyote attacks on humans do occur in metropolitan areas and often receive widespread media coverage. Little research has been done to clarify how media coverage of these uncommon events may influence urban residents’ attitudes toward coyotes. In 2010, two children in Westchester County, New York, were injured in coyote attacks. In fall 2010 and winter 2011, the authors replicated a 2006 telephone survey …

It’S Not Easy Going Green: Obstacles To Tree-Planting Programs In East Baltimore, Michael Battaglia, Geoffrey L. Buckley, Michael Galvin, Morgan Grove Nov 2014

It’S Not Easy Going Green: Obstacles To Tree-Planting Programs In East Baltimore, Michael Battaglia, Geoffrey L. Buckley, Michael Galvin, Morgan Grove

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

In 2006, government officials in Baltimore announced plans to double the city’s tree canopy over the next thirty years. While the effort has already produced positive results, many parts of the city still lack trees. In this paper we consider whether two neighborhoods in East Baltimore – Berea and Madison-Eastend – are suitable locations for tree planting. We begin by calculating how much plantable space exists in each neighborhood. We then use interview data to cast light on how residents value the urban forest and whether or not they would support efforts to increase tree canopy in East Baltimore. The …

Institutional Barriers To Sustainable Urban Development: A Case Study Of Civano In Tucson, Arizona, Kelly Turner Nov 2014

Institutional Barriers To Sustainable Urban Development: A Case Study Of Civano In Tucson, Arizona, Kelly Turner

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Sustainable urbanism attempts to curtail the negative environmental consequences of urban sprawl through best practices in urban design, yet there is a perception among experts that many developments may fall short of ideals in practice. Studies have enumerated multiple implementation barriers as evidence of shortcomings, yet few studies have empirically linked barriers to environmental impact. To address this gap, this study asks: how do institutional structures constrain the capacity to implement design alternatives and achieve the environmental goals of sustainable urbanism? The study presents interview, document, and environmental performance data in an institutional analysis of a case study, Civano, a …

Sociology Faculty Works

National health initiatives emphasize the importance of eliminating health disparities among historically disadvantaged populations. Yet, few studies have examined the range of health outcomes among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. To stimulate more inclusive research in the area, we present the Health Equity Promotion Model—a framework oriented toward LGBT people reaching their full mental and physical health potential that considers both positive and adverse health-related circumstances. The model highlights (a) heterogeneity and intersectionality within LGBT communities; (b) the influence of structural and environmental context; and (c) both health-promoting and adverse pathways that encompass behavioral, social, psychological, and biological …

The Emerging Need For Hybrid Entities: Why California Should Become The Delaware Of "Social Enterprise Law", Ross Kelley Oct 2014

The Emerging Need For Hybrid Entities: Why California Should Become The Delaware Of "Social Enterprise Law", Ross Kelley

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Recognizing the limitations and restraints posed on socially conscious for-profit organizations, several states have begun to develop a legislative model that blends attributes of traditional for-profit and not-for-profit entities into “hybrid” organizations. Chief among these states is California, which has emerged as a leader of this new social enterprise reform. California is the only state to allow a business to incorporate as a Benefit Corporation or a Flexible Purpose Corporation. Additionally, the state legislature has proposed a third type of hybrid entity—the Low-Profit Limited Liability Company. By addressing the limitations of the traditional corporate structure, California’s new hybrid entities afford …

Outed At School: Student Privacy Rights And Preventing Unwanted Disclosures Of Sexual Orientation, Evan Ettinghoff

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals often identify their sexual orientation during their formative school years. During this time, they make important decisions about whether they will come out, to whom, and under what circumstances. However, some school officials have taken matters into their own hands, disclosing information about a student’s sexual orientation to parents or family members without the student’s permission, and without considering the student’s well-being and potential consequences at home. This Note explores a student’s constitutional right to privacy in their sexual orientation. It begins by examining the unique problems LGBTQ youth encounter while developing …
