American Environmentalism And The City: An Ecosystem Services Perspective, Dorothy C. Ibes Dec 2011

American Environmentalism And The City: An Ecosystem Services Perspective, Dorothy C. Ibes

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This study traces the evolution of eight influential American environmental organizations and their relationship with, and conceptualizations of, ‘the city’ and ‘nature.’ Guided by the ecosystem services framework, the organizations’ urban-based initiatives were analyzed to determine what types of ecosystem services they emphasized and what the implications are for cities and environmental health. Results from historical, content, and interview analyses reveal the potential of the ecosystem services framework to unite the interests and efforts of multiple stakeholders, including urbanists, ecologists, economists, and environmentalists in a way that enhances both urban quality of life and conservation efforts overall.

Examining The Relationships Between Acculturation Orientations, Perceived And Actual Norms, And Drinking Behaviors Of Short-Term American Sojourners In Foreign Environments, Eric R. Pedersen, Rick A. Cruz, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer Dec 2011

Examining The Relationships Between Acculturation Orientations, Perceived And Actual Norms, And Drinking Behaviors Of Short-Term American Sojourners In Foreign Environments, Eric R. Pedersen, Rick A. Cruz, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer

Heads Up!

As little research has examined factors influencing increased and heavy drinking behavior among American sojourners abroad, this study was designed to examine how acculturation orientations (i.e., separation versus assimilation), host country per capita drinking rates, and perceptions about the drinking behavior among other sojourners and natives in the host country predicted alcohol risk abroad. A sample of 216 American college students completing study abroad programs completed a pre-abroad questionnaire to document their pre-abroad drinking levels, followed by a post-return questionnaire to assess drinking while abroad, acculturation orientations and perceived norms of drinking behavior within the foreign environment. A dichotomous variable …

“That’S What Friends Do”: Informal Caregiving For Chronically Ill Midlife And Older Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Adults, Anna M. Muraco, Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen

Sociology Faculty Works

This study examines the relationships between friends; a caregiver who provides care to a care recipient, who is a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) adult over age 50 in need of assistance due to chronic physical or mental health conditions. Using a sample of 18 care pairs (n = 36), this work examines qualitative interview data. Findings from the study include: (a) both the care recipient and the caregiver receive benefits from the friendship; (b) caregiving alters and challenges the friendship; and (c) friends assume differential levels of commitment and responsibility in providing care. Studying this population of LGB …

Comparing Greek-Affiliated Students And Student Athletes: An Examination Of The Behavior-Intention Link, Reasons For Drinking, And Alcohol-Related Consequences, Karen K. Huchting, Andrew Lac, Justin F. Hummer, Joseph W. Labrie Dec 2011

Comparing Greek-Affiliated Students And Student Athletes: An Examination Of The Behavior-Intention Link, Reasons For Drinking, And Alcohol-Related Consequences, Karen K. Huchting, Andrew Lac, Justin F. Hummer, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

While affiliation with Greek fraternities/sororities and intercollegiate athletic teams is associated with heavier drinking (Meilman et al., 1999), few studies have compared reasons for drinking among these groups. A sample of 1,541 students, identifying as either Greeks or athletes, completed an online survey. Athletes were significantly higher than Greeks on conformity reason for drinking. Tests of independent correlations indicated the magnitude of the past behavior to intention link was considerably stronger for Greeks. Greeks experienced significantly more social problems from drinking. Several group by gender ANOVA models found significant main effects with highest drinking rates, usually among Greek …

Constraints On Vector Unparticle Physics From Cosmic Censorship, Jonas R. Mureika Oct 2011

Constraints On Vector Unparticle Physics From Cosmic Censorship, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

Vector unparticle couplings to standard model fields produce repulsive corrections to gravity. From a general relativistic perspective, this leads to an effective Reissner-Nordstrom-like metric whose "charge" is a function of the unparticle coupling constant λ, and therefore can admit naked singularities. Requiring the system to respect cosmic censorship provides a new method of constraining the value of λ. These limits are extremely loose for stellar-mass black holes, but commensurate with existing bounds for primordial black holes. In the case of theoretical low-mass black holes, the bounds on λ are much stricter than those derived from astrophysical and accelerator …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of solution treatment temperature, quenching media, and various machining sequences on the warpage behavior of aluminum 7249 alloy aged to T6 and T7' tempers. Large extrusions of 7249 aluminum alloy with fins were cut into 108 "T" sections. The samples were solution-treated, aged, and machined. Three solution temperatures (445, 474, and 505 A degrees C), two quenching media (water and 20% polyalkylene glycol), two aging treatments (T6 and T7'), and three machine sequences were used. The flatness of the samples was measured on the surfaces orthogonal to the z-axis. Three …

Various thermo-mechanical processes were performed on a standard and a low oxygen content Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Testing was performed to determine whether it was possible to achieve a combination of tensile properties comparable to those of Ti-3Al-2.5V by means of cold working and annealing Ti-6Al-4V from a thickness of 0.671 cm (0.264 in.) to that between 0.081 and 0.094 cm (0.032-0.037 in.), which had never been carried out before. The resulting mechanical properties of this study were compared to the mechanical properties of Ti-3Al-2.5V to determine whether Ti-6Al-4V could be used as a suitable replacement for hydraulic tubing applications. The optimum …

Expected And Unexpected Outcomes Of A Service-Learning Program Rooted In Social Justice And Pragmatic Constructivism, Jeffrey M. Jenkins

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Service-learning, an experiential learning and teaching pedagogy, provides students and teachers the opportunity to take classroom knowledge and put it to work in real world applications in the greater community. This qualitative case study dissertation explored the expected and unexpected outcomes of a service-learning program at an urban charter high school. Through a review of current literature, the history of service-learning is traced from its modern roots to present day incarnations. Grounded in the overlapping frameworks of pragmatic constructivist theory and practice, and service-learning with a social justice model, best practices were examined through interviews and focus groups of current …

Education Policy On Extra Classes: Implications For Secondary Education In Northern Ghana, Camillo Abatanie Bonsuuri Oct 2011

Education Policy On Extra Classes: Implications For Secondary Education In Northern Ghana, Camillo Abatanie Bonsuuri

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

In 1995, Ghana’s education policymakers imposed a ban on all extra classes initiated and organized on school premises and public buildings, by individual teachers or groups of teachers, for which students were charged extra fees. The ban is referred to as the “policy on extra classes.” This study examined the genesis and justification of the said policy, including the current phenomenon of extra classes in Ghana. The study analyzed the policy’s impact on secondary education in the country, particularly Northern Ghana, using the lens of education stratification in a qualitative interpretive policy analysis approach. Interviews of leading Ghana education officials …

Resiliency Of Latino High School Students: The Impact Of External And Internal Factors, Diana Marie Lucero Oct 2011

Resiliency Of Latino High School Students: The Impact Of External And Internal Factors, Diana Marie Lucero

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated factors promoting academic resiliency within Latino students at an urban high school in the Los Angeles area. The criteria of “on-track” to graduate served as the operational definition of academic resilience. A total of 92 students completed the survey. Of these, 57 were on-track to graduate and 35 students were “not on-track” to graduate. The California Healthy Kids Survey: Resiliency & Youth Development Module (WestEd, 2008a) was the instrument employed to obtain quantitative data using three external protective factors (caring relationships, high expectations, and meaningful participation) and three internal protective factors (social competence, autonomy and sense of …

Organizational Assimilation Through Heritage Language Programming: Reconciling Justice And Bilingualism, Ricardo José Pedroarias

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to analyze the effectiveness of a heritage language Spanish program from the standpoint of organizational, curricular, and cocurricular practices. In this study, heritage language study was defined as having an emphasis on maintaining cultural awareness and language needs (Beaudrie, 2009) through cultural mediation, in which the experiences and identity of students are developed as areas of strength in the educational experience (Bennett, 2003; Gollnick & Chinn, 2004; Lovelace & Wheeler, 2006). The setting for this mixed-methodology study was an all-male Catholic secondary school. The participants in this study numbered 78 students in the …

Rethinking Critical Consciousness: Latina Teachers, Latina Girls, And Alternative Educational Spaces, Salvador Martin Oct 2011

Rethinking Critical Consciousness: Latina Teachers, Latina Girls, And Alternative Educational Spaces, Salvador Martin

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Latinas face many challenges within public schools. They are a marginalized group that has struggled to overcome the effects of practices that have created entrenched cycles of poverty and educational failure. The development of a critical consciousness has been proposed as a means of resisting and transcending oppression. Freire (1970) defined conscientização, or critical consciousness, as “learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions, and to take action against oppressive elements of reality” (p.19). This study reexamined the development and nature of critical consciousness through the use of critical feminist methodologies. Standpoint theories assisted in the development of counter-stories that …

Graham V. Florida: A Game-Changing Victory For Both Juveniles And Juvenile-Rights Advocates, Michelle Marquis Sep 2011

Graham V. Florida: A Game-Changing Victory For Both Juveniles And Juvenile-Rights Advocates, Michelle Marquis

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In Graham v. Florida, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution—specifically, the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment—prohibits the imposition of a life without parole sentence on a juvenile offender who did not commit a homicide. Graham marks a significant departure from the Supreme Court’s Eighth Amendment jurisprudence because it categorically bars life sentences for juveniles who are convicted of nonhomicide crimes based on juveniles’ unique amenability to rehabilitation, rather than on the nature of the punishment itself. While Graham’s central holding is ostensibly straightforward, the decision has generated more questions than answers. Courts …

(1+1)-Dimensional Entropic Gravity, R. B. Mann, Jonas R. Mureika Sep 2011

(1+1)-Dimensional Entropic Gravity, R. B. Mann, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

We consider the formulation of entropic gravity in two spacetime dimensions. The usual gravitational force law is derived even in the absence of area, as normally required by the holographic principle. A special feature of this perspective concerns the nature of temperature and entropy defined at a point. We argue that the constancy of the gravitational force in one spatial dimension implies the information contained at each point in space is an internal degree of freedom on the manifold, and furthermore is a universal constant, contrary to previous assertions that entropic gravity in one spatial dimension is ill-defined. We give …

The Patentability Of Financial Methods: The Market Participants’ Perspectives, Stefania Fusco Sep 2011

The Patentability Of Financial Methods: The Market Participants’ Perspectives, Stefania Fusco

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In the last few years, there has been a renewed interest in the validity of patenting business methods. The issue appeared to be settled in 1998 with State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc. However, in 2008, the Federal Circuit, responding to a more restrictive approach toward the patent system adopted by the Supreme Court, began questioning the soundness of the policy to extend patent protection to business methods. The Federal Circuit’s adjustment of its position occurred explicitly in In re Bilski when the court decided to rehear the case en banc and reconsider the …

Patriotism And Taxation: The Tax Compliance Implications Of The Tea Party Movement, Richard Lavoie Sep 2011

Patriotism And Taxation: The Tax Compliance Implications Of The Tea Party Movement, Richard Lavoie

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Given the rise of the tea party movement, which draws strength from the historical linkage between patriotism and tax protests in the United States, the role of patriotism as a general tax compliance factor is examined in light of the extant empirical evidence. The existing research suggests that patriotism may be a weaker tax compliance factor in the United States than it is elsewhere. In light of this possibility, the tea party movement has the potential to weaken this compliance factor even more. Further, when considered in light of the broader tax morale factors that contribute to tax compliance, the …

On The Leiter Side: Developing A Universal Assessment Tool For Measuring Scholarly Output By Law Professors And Ranking Law Schools, Robert Steinbuch

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

With varying results, many scholars and commentators have focused their attention on judging the quality of law professors, as measured by their scholarly output. First, this Article explains the methods respectively developed by Brian Leiter and Roger Williams University School of Law for top-tier and second-tier law schools, and it considers other works of scholarship that measure academic publication. Then, this Article explicates a protocol (the “Protocol”) for measuring all of the scholarly output of any law school faculty member. Building on the Leiter and Roger Williams methods, the expanded Protocol accounts for a wider breadth of faculty publications and …

Amicus Briefs: Sounding Off On Reforming Inequitable Conduct, Joy Lynn Bala Sep 2011

Amicus Briefs: Sounding Off On Reforming Inequitable Conduct, Joy Lynn Bala

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Inequitable conduct, which has been characterized as an “absolute plague” and an “atomic bomb,” allows an accused infringer to assert an affirmative defense against a patentee for violating the duty of candor and good faith in acquiring a patent. The consequences of this “atomic bomb” extend well beyond the litigation context and significantly impact the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), patent agents, and patent attorneys. Such consequences include exorbitant litigation costs, overdisclosure to the PTO and thus decreased efficiency by PTO examiners, disciplinary action and potential disbarment of patent agents and attorneys, and even decreased innovation. The Federal Circuit’s …

Down The Rabbit Hole With Citizens United: Are Bans On Corporate Direct Campaign Contributions Still Constitutional?, Jason S. Campbell Sep 2011

Down The Rabbit Hole With Citizens United: Are Bans On Corporate Direct Campaign Contributions Still Constitutional?, Jason S. Campbell

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Since the early twentieth century, the Tillman Act has barred corporations from contributing directly to candidates for federal office. In Citizens United v. FEC, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a related ban that prevented corporations from making independent expenditures in candidate elections. The legal foundation of the independent expenditure ban was similar to that which still supports the corporate direct contributions ban, thus calling into question the continuing validity of the direct contributions ban. This Note argues that if the Court follows the logical path that it laid down in Citizens United, it should overturn the corporate direct …

Economic Boycotts As Harassment: The Threat To First Amendment Protected Speech In The Aftermath Of Doe V. Reed, Elian Dashev

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

The recent U.S. Supreme Court case of Doe v. Reed called into question the effectiveness and, potentially, the legitimacy of the economic boycott as a tool to counteract the influence of Major Political Players in the electoral process—despite the protection that such boycotts have been afforded historically under the First Amendment. The holding in the case was very narrow: the Court deemed constitutional as a general matter the compelled disclosure of the names of the supporters of a referendum. However, in dicta, the Court acknowledged that disclosure could be subject to an as-applied challenge if there were a reasonable probability …
