Severe thunderstorms comprise an extreme class of deep convective clouds and produce high-impact weather such as destructive surface winds, hail, and tornadoes. This study addresses the question of how severe thunderstorm frequency in the United States might change because of enhanced global radiative forcing associated with elevated greenhouse gas concentrations. We use global climate models and a high-resolution regional climate model to examine the larger-scale (or “environmental”) meteorological conditions that foster severe thunderstorm formation. Across this model suite, we find a net increase during the late 21st century in the number of days in which these severe thunderstorm environmental conditions …

No.1, December 2007: Parent Involvement And The Education Of English Learners And Standard English Learners: Perspectives Of Lausd Parent Leader, Magaly Lavadenz Ph.D., Elvira G. Armas Ed.D., Irene Villanueva Ph.D.
Education and Policy Briefs
This policy brief reports findings from a survey of parent leaders in 2007 that sought to understand what parents of English Learners and Standard English Learners think about the education of their children and about parent education and involvement in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Surveys with 513 LAUSD parent leaders revealed low ratings for LAUSD’s parent education efforts as well as for student academic programs. Open-ended responses point both to educational as well as policy recommendations in the following areas: 1) home/school collaboration; 2) professional development, curriculum and Instruction, and tutors/support; and 3) accountability. This policy brief …

Brothers Of The Christian School, Luke Salm
Journal of Catholic Education
The Brothers of the Christian Schools, popularly known in the United States as Christian Brothers, have made numerous significant contributions to the development of Catholic education. Building and staffing schools, colleges, and orphanages, producing textbooks and catechetical materials, advocating for the poor, and creating new models of Catholic education are among their many successes. Manhattan College, St. Mary’s Press, and San Miguel Schools are all products of this community of Catholic educators.

Against Expediency: The Ethics Of Education, Gerard Mannion
Against Expediency: The Ethics Of Education, Gerard Mannion
Journal of Catholic Education
This article suggests that church-linked universities and colleges can and should show that there is an alternative to the expediency and pseudo-utilitarian thinking which currently dominates higher education. Such institutions can and should serve as beacons of a virtuous approach to education which can show others a more positive way forward. Theology and ethics”both disciplines mutually informing the other”hold the key to fostering and promoting a true culture of ministry both in the day-to-day existence of universities and colleges and in nurturing young minds to take that culture of ministry out into the wider community.

Keeping “Every Catholic Child In A Catholic School” During The Great Depression, 1933-1939, Ann Marie Ryan
Journal of Catholic Education
The quest for state and federal aid for Catholic schools is not new. Concerns regarding excessive entanglement, mission dilution, and external control have been voiced for decades. A particularly instructive historical period on this issue is the era of the Great Depression. Because of widespread economic hardship across sectors, Catholic leaders were active and engaged in the politics of federal and state aid for schools and experienced both success and failure.
Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti
Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti
Mathematics Faculty Works
Calcium (Ca) plays an important role in regulating various cellular processes. In a variety of cell types, Ca signaling occurs within microdomains where channels deliver localized pulses of Ca activating a nearby collection of Ca-sensitive receptors. The small number of channels involved ensures that the signaling process is stochastic. The aggregate response of several thousand of these microdomains yields a whole-cell response which dictates the cell behavior. Here, we study the statistical properties of a population of these microdomains in response to a trigger signal. We use a first-passage-time approach to show analytically how Ca release in the whole cell …

Aluminum alloys 6061, 2024, and 7075 were heat treated to various tempers and then subjected to a range of plastic strain (stretching) in order to determine their strain limits. Tensile properties, conductivity, hardness, and grain size measurements were evaluated. The effects of the plastic strain on these properties are discussed and strain limits are suggested.
