Evaluating The Moral Framing Of Disaffiliation: Sociological And Pastoral Perspectives On The Rise Of The “Nones”, Brett C. Hoover

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The wave of religious disaffiliation that began in the 1990s in the United States has gone from a concern of pastoral leaders to perhaps the concern of pastoral leaders. This article examines a moral framing of religious disaffiliation—where disaffiliation is seen as a symptom of larger moral struggles in society. After a review of contemporary sociological research on the phenomenon of disaffiliation, its roots and causes, the article explores the thinking of the influential Catholic bishop and media entrepreneur Robert Barron as an example of the moral framing of religious disaffiliation. Barron operates as a “moral entrepreneur” in today’s media-rich …

War And Autocephaly In Ukraine, Cyril Hovorun Jan 2020

War And Autocephaly In Ukraine, Cyril Hovorun

Theological Studies Faculty Works

A series of conflicts that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union culminated in the war in Ukraine waged by Russia in 2014. The international community was taken by surprise, and its reactions to the Russian aggression were often confused and inadequate. Even more confused and inadequate were the responses from global Christianity. Russian propaganda often renders the aggression against Ukraine as a quasi-religious conflict: a “holy war” against the “godless” or “heterodox” West. It would be natural, therefore, for the Christian churches worldwide to loudly condemn both propaganda and aggression. However, in most cases, their response was silence. Such …

Patristics And Sociolinguistics, Cyril Hovorun Jan 2019

Patristics And Sociolinguistics, Cyril Hovorun

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The paper suggests a new hermeneutical take on receptive patristics. Receptive patristics means here the ways in which patristic texts are perceived in the community of patristic scholars and in ecclesiastical communities. The perceptions of the patristic materials that these two kinds of communities demonstrate are not always convergent. Their divergence can be explained on the basis of the distinction between normative linguistics and sociolinguistics. Ecclesiastical communities tend to treat the language of the Fathers and Mothers of the church in coherence with the way in which the proponents of normative linguistics treat the phenomenon of language. Patristic scholars, in …

‘Where Have You Vanished?’: Aelred Of Rievaulx’S Lamentation On Simon, Anna Harrison Dec 2018

‘Where Have You Vanished?’: Aelred Of Rievaulx’S Lamentation On Simon, Anna Harrison

Theological Studies Faculty Works

In his lamentation on the death of his friend, Simon, Aelred responds to a centuries-long suspicion about grief by mounting an apology for mourning that is in keeping with a larger Cistercian trend. Aelred’s chief preoccupation in the lamentation is, however, to emphasize the productivity of grief, both for the living and for the dead. Aelred associates the desire to reunite with the beloved dead with stimulating the mourner’s desire for heaven as location for the longed-for reunion, and he conceives of the pain associated with bereavement as payment for the sins of the deceased.

Review Of Muslim Americans In The Military: Centuries Of Service By Edward E. Curtis Iv, Amir Hussain

Theological Studies Faculty Works

Edward E. Curtis IV is one of the most important scholars of Islam in the
United States. This slim volume is a welcome addition to his work, and
should be required reading for all who are interested in the place of Muslims
within the history of America. One also wishes that the book be read
widely by American Muslims. As the latter day prophet, Bob Marley, once
sang about other soldiers in the Americas, “If you know your history/ Then you would know where you’re coming from.” Curtis’ book helps us, as
American Muslims, to learn about our own history …

Dialoguing From A Fixed Point: How Aristotle And Pope Francis Illuminate The Promise — And Limits — Of Inclusion In Catholic Higher Education, Matthew R. Petrusek Jul 2017

Dialoguing From A Fixed Point: How Aristotle And Pope Francis Illuminate The Promise — And Limits — Of Inclusion In Catholic Higher Education, Matthew R. Petrusek

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This article examines the meaning of the word inclusion as it relates to Catholic identity in higher education. Noting the widespread presence of this value in the mission statements of Catholic colleges, the article draws on insights from Aristotelian logic and Pope Francis’s theology of encounter to argue that inclusion can only be defined as a subordinate value to the value of establishing and maintaining a fixed institutional identity that is both uniquely Catholic and non-negotiable. Distinguishing between the concepts of procedural inclusion and substantive inclusion, the article contends that Catholic colleges have good reason to embrace inclusion so long …

Ecumenism: Rapprochement Through Co-Working To Reconciliation, Cyril Hovorun Jan 2017

Ecumenism: Rapprochement Through Co-Working To Reconciliation, Cyril Hovorun

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This paper explores some forms of interaction between the Catholic and Orthodox churches in different contexts. Some of these forms are helpful, but not always efficient, and some are not helpful. Theological dialogues belong to the former category of interactions: they are helpful, but not efficient. Alliances on an ideological basis, for instance on the basis of “traditional values,” are unhelpful, because they polarise the churches internally. This article instead proposes a collaboration in the public domain as an alternative way of rapprochement between the two churches. The Ukrainian Maidan (the revolution of 2014) exemplifies a co-working space, which proved …
