Ecology Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi, Causal Agent Of Bacterial Stem And Root Rot On Sweet Potato And Etiology Of Souring., Valmir Duarte

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During three seasons, mother storage roots of Beauregard sweetpotato were inoculated with Erwinia chrysanthemi in March, and the pathogen was recovered from them the day they were bedded, 7 days later, and at the first and second pullings of slips as well as from underground stems at harvest in September and October of the first and second transplantings, respectively. Little stem rot occurred in the fields during the three seasons. Thirteen strains of E. chrysanthemi, 8 isolated originally from sweetpotato and 5 from other hosts, and one strain of E. carotovora subsp. carotovora were inoculated on sweetpotato and 12 different …

Dispersion And Physiological Ecology Of Mosquito Adults In Louisiana Ricelands., Alan Richard Holck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A sampling technique for estimating the size of adult mosquito populations in vegetation was developed. Regression analysis was used to obtain absolute density estimates from sweep net. Diurnal population size estimates of Louisiana riceland mosquitoes were made on a 35.6-square km site 5 km south of Kaplan, LA. Four mosquito species were present: Psorophora columbiae, Anopheles quadrimaculatus, An. crucians and Culex salinarius. Mosquito species were highly stratified in their distribution. Psorophora columbiae was primarily observed in pastures with livestock and in rice fields. Both Anophelines were found only in structures. Culex salinarius did not exhibit habitat preference. Anopheles quadrimaculatus exhibited …

Ecological Studies Of Velvetbean Caterpillar, Anticarsia Gemmatalis Hubner, Pupae In Louisiana Soybean Fields., Joon-Ho Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The microhabitat distribution of velvetbean caterpillar (VBC), Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was studied in soybean field cages and fields during 1985, 1986 and 1987. Larval density did not affect pupal horizontal distribution patterns related to direction and distance from the plant row. Pupae were found equally on both sides of soybean plant rows in a cage study. Pupae were found on and below the soil surface, but not on the plant. In 51 cm row spacing, both equal number and similar dispersion pattern of pupae were found on either side of the plant row. In 91 cm row spacing, …

The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus Jan 1988

The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The influence of fire on turkey oak (Quercus laevis Walt.) and sand live oak (Q. geminata Small) populations was examined in experimental fires in sandhills near Tampa. Turkey oak crown survival was positively related to oak dbh, distance to the nearest longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and dbh of the nearest pine. The pyrogenic litter of pines adversely affected survival of small turkey oaks within 10-20 m of the nearest pine, depending on fire severity. Resprouting of crown-killed turkey oaks was inversely related to oak dbh and, in one field, distance to the nearest pine. Poor resprouting away from pines …

The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry Jan 1988

The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The composition of a forest of relicts of cultivation in four uninhabited valleys in Kohala, Hawaii, is documented. A general hypothesis is made that arboreal distribution patterns are a function of both historical land use and ecological interaction since abandonment. The physical and historical geography of the valleys was investigated. Climate varies little, but distinct geomorphic zones offer differing biological environments. Prehistoric land use consisted of taro patches with intercropped banks. Talus slope gardens supported the Polynesian tree crops 'ohi'a 'ai (Eugenia malaccensis), kukui (Aleurites moluccana), 'ulu, (Artocarpus incisus), ti (Cordyline terminalis), and noni (Morinda citrifolia), important in today's flora. …

Rice Stink Bug, Oebalus Pugnax (F.), On Rice: Evaluation For Plant Resistance, Interaction Of Field Fungi With Feeding Damage, And Evaluation Of Insecticides For Control., Marieanne Eva Hollay Jan 1987

Rice Stink Bug, Oebalus Pugnax (F.), On Rice: Evaluation For Plant Resistance, Interaction Of Field Fungi With Feeding Damage, And Evaluation Of Insecticides For Control., Marieanne Eva Hollay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Feeding punctures of the rice stink bug (RSB), Oebalus pugnax (F.), provide fungi entry sites into rice, Oryza sativa (L.), grains and kernels (hulled grains). Feeding sheaths also serve as a source of nutrients for fungi. Grain spotting fungi did not affect the percentage of spotted kernels (pecky rice) and significantly reduced full grain weight only at low infestation rates of one and two RSB per panicle. Panicles had been treated with a single application of propriconazol (1000 ppm) soon after flowering and later infested in the early milk stage with RSB adult pairs for 9 days. Propriconazol was not …

Plant Germination And Growth Inhibitors From Ceratiola Ericoides And Calamintha Ashei (Herbicides, Allelopathy, Monoterpenes, Phenolics)., Nesrin Tanrisever Jan 1986

Plant Germination And Growth Inhibitors From Ceratiola Ericoides And Calamintha Ashei (Herbicides, Allelopathy, Monoterpenes, Phenolics)., Nesrin Tanrisever

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As part of a chemical-ecological study of the Florida scrub community, Ceratiola ericoides (Empetraceae) and Calamintha ashei (Lamiaceae) were chemically investigated for natural products with possible allelochemical activities. The chromatographic separations and chemical investigations were guided by germination and radicle growth bioassays performed on seeds of commercial lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and Schizachyrium scoparium, a native grass of the Florida sandhill community. From the dichloromethane extract of aerial parts of C. ericoides, 2', 4'-dihydroxychalcone, the dihydrochalcones angoletin and 2',6'-dihydroxy-4-methoxy-3',5'-dimethyldihydrochalcone, the flavanones 8-methylpinocembrin, 6,8-dimethylpinocembrin and 7-hydroxyflavanone were isolated along with the triterpenes erytrodiol and ursolic acid. Significant inhibition on S. scoparium radicle …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field studies were conducted to document seedling johnsongrass Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. growth as influenced by date of emergence in sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids, cultivar 'CP 65-357'). The crop was in the plant cane year of growth in 1982 and 1983, and the first stubble year in 1984. The experiments were randomized complete block designs. Johnsongrass seedling emergence days were approximately three weeks apart, from April or early May through mid-July for a total of five emergence days each year. There were 36, 60, and 72 replicates for emergence days numbered 1 to 3, 4, and 5, respectively, over three …

The Population Ecology And Nutrient Transport Of Gulf Menhaden In Fourleague Bay, Louisiana (Mortality, Growth, Feeding, Production, Migration)., Linda Ann Deegan Jan 1985

The Population Ecology And Nutrient Transport Of Gulf Menhaden In Fourleague Bay, Louisiana (Mortality, Growth, Feeding, Production, Migration)., Linda Ann Deegan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An ecological study of the young-of-the-year of three year-classes of gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) was conducted from July 1981 to December 1983 in Fourleague Bay, Louisiana. This study documented gulf menhaden population ecology and the importance of gulf menhaden in the nutrient and energy balance of estuaries. Young-of-the-year gulf menhaden immigrated in winter and moved to tidal creeks and ponds, where they remained until midsummer. They then moved into open bays, where they remained until the fall. This migration pattern coincides with sequentially available, but spatially separate, productivity peaks in marsh and open bays. In the fall, they emigrated to …

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar Jan 1984

Manipur In Transition: Differentials Of Development In A Polyethnic Area Of India., Kiran Banga Chhokar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to investigate the processes of socio-economic change that have affected the major ethnic groups in Manipur, mainly the subsistence level tribals and the Meitei peasantry; the strategies adopted by these groups, and individuals within the groups, to cope with the changed environment; and the spatial expression of these processes of change in varying patterns of development. Manipur, a polyethnic state in northeastern India, is currently the scene of hostilities among the different ethnic groups. The study tests the hypothesis that the underlying cause of these conflicts is the difference in the levels of development of the …

Systematics, Redescription, And Geographic Variation Of The Blackside Darter, Percina Maculata (Pisces; Percidae)., Eugene Clifton Beckham Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A systematic study of the North American percid fish Percina (Alvordius) maculata (Girard) was undertaken to determine the extent and pattern of geographic variation, subspeciation, and sexual dimorphism. A brief nomenclatorial history is presented, the species is redescribed, and variation, distribution, habitat, and subgeneric relationships are discussed. Other than dorsal fin pigmentation, absence of modified midventral scales in females, and limited intrapopulational sexual dimorphism in a few morphometric characters, no variation in most of the thirty-nine characters examined is present between males and females. Morphometrics exhibited no pattern of geographic variation; however, meristic characters revealed a major trend in geographic …
