Isolation And Oxidative Modifications Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Isabel Salkeld Nunez Jan 1992

Isolation And Oxidative Modifications Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Isabel Salkeld Nunez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In a biochemical systematic study of the tribe Heliantheae, the isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from four species is reported. The aerial parts of Melampodium leucanthum afforded, besides the known melampolides melampodin A acetate, leucanthin B and leucanthinin, the new lactone leucanthinin-4-epoxide. Peracid oxidation of leucanthinin provided its monoepoxide derivative, the physical and spectroscopical data of which were identical with the new natural lactone. The isolation and structural elucidation of 7$\alpha$-hydroxydehydrocostus lactone, 13-hydroxy-11,13-dihydro-7,11-dehydro-3-desoxy-zaluzanin C and reynosin from Podachaenium eminens is reported. The isolation of the furanoheliangolides atripliciolide 2-methylbutyrate, atripliciolide tiglate and 17,18-dihydrobudlein A from Pappobolus nigrescens was accomplished. …

Modification Of The Drainmod-Creams Model To Incorporate A Nutrient Submodel., Abdul Razak Bin Saleh Jan 1992

Modification Of The Drainmod-Creams Model To Incorporate A Nutrient Submodel., Abdul Razak Bin Saleh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

DRAINMOD-CREAMS model was used to simulate surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot and non-subsurface drained plot in southern Louisiana. Seven years (1981-1987) of recorded data were used in this study. In general, the performance of the model in simulating surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot is satisfactory. However, the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model did not simulate surface runoff and sediment loss accurately from non-subsurface drained plot. The CREAMS nutrient submodel was also tested on both plots. The CREAMS model seriously overestimates the nitrogen loss from non-subsurface drained plot. The sensitivity of the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model on erodibility …

A Study Of Ferruccio Busoni's Transcriptions Of Six Organ Chorale Preludes By Johannes Brahms., Carmen Scialla Jan 1992

A Study Of Ferruccio Busoni's Transcriptions Of Six Organ Chorale Preludes By Johannes Brahms., Carmen Scialla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ferruccio Busoni's piano arrangements of six of Brahms's Eleven Chorale Preludes, Op. 122, are among the least known of his transcriptions. Published in 1897, they have remained overshadowed by his more popular transcriptions of the organ works of Bach. Maurice Hinson stated that "Busoni arranged some of the most pianistic of the set"; continuing, Hinson observed that problems encountered in the originals, such as bringing out inner voices and achieving a satisfactory legato, are more easily solved on the piano.$\sp1$. Referring to Busoni's own writings on transcribing as found in the appendices to his edition of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, this …

Demonstration Of A Control Strategy For Sustained Algal Growth At A Full-Scale Level Under Computer-Automated, Continuous Culture Conditions., Kelly Ann Rusch Jan 1992

Demonstration Of A Control Strategy For Sustained Algal Growth At A Full-Scale Level Under Computer-Automated, Continuous Culture Conditions., Kelly Ann Rusch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A computerized algal turbidostat was designed and constructed for use in aquaculture facilities requiring a continuous feed source. Continuous cultures, maintained in the exponential growth phase by the continual introduction of fresh media, exhibit a steadystate nature easily adaptable to computer automation and optimization processes. These characteristics, in contrast to batch culture methods, result in both reduced land and labor requirements; an important consideration for commercial applications wherein algal production occupies as much as 40 percent of a facility in both space and cost. The turbidostat system consisted of two 0.6 m$\sp3$ growth chambers supported by a central monitoring block …

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh Jan 1992

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism by which quarks, believed to be the fundamental constituents of matter, are prevented from existing in the free state is still unknown. The phenomenon of quark confinement is one of the fundamental problems in physics. One of the most viable candidates for a hypothesis of confinement is the dual superconductor mechanism that likens quark confinement to the Meissner effect in superconductors. The peculiarities of quark interactions make a numerical approach to the subject a necessity, and therefore, much of the work in this area has been done through the methods of lattice gauge theory, with the simplicities afforded …

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi Jan 1992

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the informational nature of a modeled visual demonstration of slalom-ski type movements performed on a ski simulator. Hypotheses exist suggesting that a model may convey information primarily about movement coordination (Newell, 1985), or movement form (Whiting, 1988), but there is no empirical evidence that this information is used by the learner so that skill acquisition is facilitated. To investigate this information question, three experiments were conducted that replicated and extended a study by Whiting, Bijlard, and den Brinker (1987) by analyzing movement kinematics of subjects in addition to movement outcome. In the first experiment, the expert model's …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith Jan 1992

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …

Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope Jan 1992

Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the relationship of age to various aspects of the chronic pain syndrome before and after participation in a multidisciplinary 21-day inpatient treatment program for chronic pain at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Subjects were 135 male servicemen and veterans, ranging in age from 23 to 71 years. Age was significantly related to number of medical problems and duration of pain, but not number of pain sites, surgeries, or medications. While age was negatively, but weakly associated with cognitive aspects of depression on admission, it was not significantly related to either total score on …

The Molecular Systematics Of Unitunicate, Perithecial Ascomycetes., Joseph William Spatafora Jan 1992

The Molecular Systematics Of Unitunicate, Perithecial Ascomycetes., Joseph William Spatafora

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Maximum parsimony analysis of partial sequences from the small subunit ribosomal DNA (ssrDNA) rejects the monophyly of unitunicate, perithecial ascomycetes (pyrenomycetes). The genera Kathistes, Pyxidiophora and Subbaromyces are separated from a large clade of relatively derived pyrenomycetes. This derived pyrenomycete clade is supported by a bootstrap confidence level of 100% and a decay index of $>$10 steps, and contains two subclades, A and B. Subclade A comprises the orders Clavicipitales, Hypocreales, Microascales and the genus Ceratocystis; subclade B consists of the Diaporthales, Sordariales, Xylariales and the genus Ophiostoma. The Clavicipitales is a sister taxon to the Hypocreales, which consists …

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang Jan 1992

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

FtsA is an essential cell division protein which is synthesized in minute amounts in Escherichia coli. To study the effects of overexpressing ftsA on the phenotype of E. coli cells, DNA fragments encoding the ftsA gene were subcloned downstream of a lac or a tac promoter in two plasmids. High-level expression of the ftsA gene from these promoters inhibited normal cell septation and caused the cells to become long, nonseptate filaments. Continued overexpression of ftsA resulted in the filaments developing spherical bulges up to 4 um in diameter. It is suggested that these bulges may emanate from septation sites because …

Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu Jan 1992

Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is well established that anisotropy does not affect the critical behavior of a system in thermodynamic equilibrium undergoing a second order phase transition. We study here an anisotropic kinetic model for heterogeneous catalysis which mimics the oxidation of CO on the (110) surface of a transition metal like Pd. In this model, the oxidation process occurs at an infinite reaction rate. We mapped out the phase diagram of possible steady states for various anisotropic reaction and absorption processes as a function of the O$\sb2$/CO adsorption rate and the CO diffusion rate. The phase diagram depends upon the amount of …

Modeling Three-Dimensional Groundwater Flow And Solute Transport By The Finite Element Method With Parameter Estimation., Fang Xin Yu Jan 1992

Modeling Three-Dimensional Groundwater Flow And Solute Transport By The Finite Element Method With Parameter Estimation., Fang Xin Yu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A general, systematic and improved numerical formulation for the three-dimensional (3-D) groundwater flow and solute transport problems was derived, using the finite element method. In the numerical formulation, a hidden mistake, which has appeared in many textbooks and journal papers dealing with the advective term of the general 3-D solute transport equation, was found and corrected. Some simpler and practical expressions for the leaky boundary condition, surface flux condition, and sources and sinks were proposed. To improve the conventional formulation for the time derivatives, a combination of the Galerkin method and the collocation method was developed. A more accurate scheme …
