"Superbly Sterile:" Queer Reproduction In Victorian Literature And Culture, Mary Timothy Wilson Jan 2015

"Superbly Sterile:" Queer Reproduction In Victorian Literature And Culture, Mary Timothy Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Examining a broad range of texts,“‘Superbly Sterile:’ Queer Reproduction in Victorian Literature and Culture,” argues that Thomas Hardy’s final naturalist novels, popular nineteenth-century vampire narratives, and the fiction of Oscar Wilde queered the bildungsroman (or novel of development) through characters who failed or refused to progress along sexual and maturational timelines. Where these texts’ critics have tended to read them as cautionary tales about homosexuality or predatory female sexuality, this dissertation contends that they also presented alternate forms of kinship and reproduction. They do so through the use of recursive, inverted, or otherwise backward relationships to time. Where Victorian sexology …

Scanning Probe Investigations Of Nanopatterned And Thermo-Responsive Polypeptoids And The Design Of A Sample Stage For Force Modulation Microscopy, Lu Lu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Protocols for patterning nanostructures of polymers were developed to enable scanning probe microscopy (SPM) studies of surface properties at the molecular level. A chemically selective surface for patterning polymers was generated by combining particle lithography with organosilane immersion. Poly(N-allyl glycine), a biocompatible and backbone degradable polypeptoid, was grown on Si(111) at confined amine sites using surface-initiated polymerization (also known as the “graft from” approach). A thermo-responsive random copolypeptoid, poly[(N-ethyl glycine)32-r-(N-butyl glycine17)], was pre-synthesized and attached onto a patterned organosilane surface using a thiol-ene click reaction (“graft to” approach). The phase transitions of the copolypeptoid nanostructures in an aqueous environment was …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an ethnographic analysis of a participatory plant breeding project in northwest Portugal. Participatory plant breeding (PPB) is a crop enhancement strategy that brings farmers and plant breeders together in the effort to conserve crop genetic resources in-situ, improve yield, and increase the overall agricultural sustainability in agriculture. One strategy in PPB calls for plant breeders to spend considerable time on working farms to understand better farmers’ knowledge and skill, and to survey the existing crop genetic diversity within the existing resource limitations on farms. Although there are clear social implications for PPB, the bulk of PPB evaluative …

Essay On Anti-Takeover Provisions And Corporate Spin-Offs, Wei Du Jan 2015

Essay On Anti-Takeover Provisions And Corporate Spin-Offs, Wei Du

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite the prevalent use of anti-takeover provisions (ATPs) based indices as measures of corporate governance quality, the role of ATPs (efficiency vs. entrenchment hypotheses), and their relationship to firm performance are not fully understood. Corporate spin-offs offer a unique opportunity to disentangle entrenchment motives from efficiency motives behind the adoption of ATPs. This setting also provides relatively clean inferences on the relation between ATPs and firm performance. This paper studies the design of ATPs in spun-off firms relative to their parents, the determinants of ATPs, and their relationship to subsequent firm performance. We show that spun-off firms typically are endowed …
