Spillover Effects Of Fdi On Innovation In China : An Analysis Of Provincial Data, Kui Yin Cheung, Ping Lin

CAPS Working Paper Series

We use the provincial data from 1995 to 2000 to test the impact of inward FDI on innovation activity in China. We found a positive effect of FDI on the number of patent applications filed by the domestic firms. This positive relationship persists when we divide the patents by types (invention, utility model and external design) and when we group the provinces into regions (the coastal, central, and the western regions). This positive spillover effect is much stronger for minor innovations such as external design and utility model, highlighting a "demonstration effect" of FDI. However, FDI into the coastal region …

一九五0至一九七0年代是香港都市發展的重要時期。本文探討這段時期小說在都市發展、西方文化和本土文化影響下的特點‧在都市的現代化和工業化之下,除了都市的繁榮外,都市中傳媒事業的蓬勃為文學提供了有利的因素。 儘管也有人批評香港的文學空間過於依賴大眾文化,然而香港作家卻有他們的 適應力,把這種局限轉變為小說的特點。這些是本文探討的問題。另外,香港作家對西方現代主義的吸納在閱讀和表現都市方面開拓了新的角度和方法。七0年代本土意識的萌芽和成長,使作家關懷本土, 以新的角度閱讀都市,並通 過寫作表達對都市的認同和建立以都市為主的主體意識。都市發展、現代主義和本土意識,三者相互影響,而不同的作家有各自獨特的角度和觀察。本文選取不同時期的幾位作家,包括李維陵、劉以鬯、崑南、西西和也斯為例,具體分析他們對都市不同的閱讀和表述。

金融中介和經濟發展 : 中國大陸為例, Zuxiang Zhang

本論文研究中國大陸的金融中介体 (包括銀行和股票市場) 与經濟增長相關性。所用數据是從1994 年到2001 年的季度時間序列數据。作者對各個時間序列數据都考慮了季節因素的影響并進行了穩定性檢驗。

回歸分析結果發現,從長期來看, 金融深度 (DEPTH) 和經濟增長有顯著的正相關關系, 國有商業銀行相對与銀行体系的規模的比例和經濟增長有不顯著的關系。這表明銀行的發展對經濟的增長是有促進作用。同時, 股票市場的相對于經濟總量的規模和經濟發展有顯著的正相關關系, 但是股票市場的流動性和經濟增長有不顯著的關系。這個表明中國大陸的股票市場從長遠來看其發展會促進經濟發展, 但是其流動性對經濟發展的作用並不大。

為了研究金融中介和經濟發展的短期關系, 本論文運用誤差校正模型來檢驗金融中介和經濟發展的相關性。結果表明衡量股票市場規模的變量CAPITALIZATION 和經濟 增長有顯著的負相關關系。這表明中國股票市場存在巨大的 “ 泡沫”, 大量的投机和其它不良的行為。對此, 政府應該重視和加強對股票市場的監控, 對一級市場的上市審批和二級市場的交易買賣都要進行引導, 使股票市場真正成為企業融資的好渠道。

中國務實外交戰略的目的和效果, Pak Wai Chan

中華人民共和國自建國以來，就是以馬列主義、毛澤東思想為指導理論 的意識形態國家，然而意識形態不是任何時候都左右了中國的外交戰略的。 當意識形態在中國的內政、外交上處於主導位置時，通常不會出現務實 的外交戰略。但是當國家陷於政權的生存、鞏固和安全的危機時，就會出現例 外。

當國家總體戰略是以經濟建設為中心，強調發展經濟，意識形態相對淡化時，務實外交戰略就大行其道。

就中國的務實外交戰略的本質而言，中國本國的國家利益仍然是指導中 國外交戰略的最高原則，其務實的本質與國際政治學理論中的實在主義並無根本的不同。然而，毛澤東時代與鄧小平時代實行務實外交戰略是有不同的，前者僅是外交戰略中的例外，後者則是常規，而非例外。

不論在毛澤東時代還是在鄧小平時代，務實外交戰略在特定的時代背景下都得到了淋漓盡致的展現。前者為中國鞏固新生政權和化解國家安全危機起 到了根本性的作用。後者?中國的社會主義現代化建設爭取了二十多年的和平環境，使中國的經濟得以維持了二十多年的持續高速增長，使中華民族的偉大復興出現了曙光。

香港小說中的情欲與政治：從施叔青、李碧華到黃碧雲, Ho Chiu Lam

在文學創作之中，情欲與政治二者常會構成一種奇怪的論述關係。如果把情欲書寫與政治表現放在香港這個西方最後的殖民城市之中討論，可能會是一個複雜有趣的題目。在論文中，我們主要分析了施叔青、李碧華與黃碧雲三位作家在小說中的情欲書寫與政治論述的相互關係，並嘗試在她們的作品中找尋一些政治無意識的信息。三位作家在小說中的情欲書寫都有較突出的表現，並備受評論家和讀者 關注，而且她們的小說體現了香港小說中不同時期和不同方向的情欲書寫之路。 追跡她們的情欲書寫之路，同時也可能在追跡香港這個被殖民城市幾段文化心態的變遷軌跡。在此，情欲有兩個意義：一是小說中有關情欲的書寫，以及其所衍生出來的意義；二是主體／作者／香港人對香港這身份矛盾的殖民城市的特殊情感。

論文共分五章。第一章是緒論，主要介紹論文的研究題目與研究範圍，並考察了香港小說中情欲書寫與政治論述的兩個先例──張愛玲的《秧歌》和《赤地之戀》。第二章主要討論施叔青的小說，她小說中情愛故事的男女主人公多是來自不同地方的「外來者」，加上她本身「外來作家」的身份，遂成為一個特別的論述現象。第三章主要討論李碧華的小說創作，她是一位流行的言情小說作家， 許多時所謂「政治」在她的作品中都成了一種「道具」或「賣點」，但是隱藏在她作品下的大眾政治意識卻吸引了我們的注意。第四章主要討論黃碧雲的作品， 她的小說在談情講愛之餘，總不乏血腥、瘋狂、暴力或死亡的場面。不過我們在研究中注意到的是，她的愛情和死亡與「九七」回歸往往是一氣相通的。第五章為總結與檢討。

This paper describes and evaluates the competition policies in Japan, China, and Hong Kong. A simple framework based on the economic incentive of violations of law is used to evaluate the effectiveness of competition policy. After half a century of effort, Japan has finally established of a modern antitrust system, although its surcharge system could be further improved so as to enhance the deterrence effect of the law. China and Hong Kong (as most other East Asia countries) are at the early stage of developing an adequate and effective competition policy. In the past decade, much research has been conducted on the practice nurses engage in diagnosing the clinical condition of patients. Many of the studies suggest that diagnostic practices of nurses in simulation settings follow a hypothetical deductive model that similar to the clinical decision-making or diagnostic reasoning process. A second line of inquiry claims that experience used in conjunction with intuition form the major core of diagnostic practice in nursing. However, these studies either assume nurses are reasoned in a primarily rationalist fashion or offer no conclusive explanations of the details on how intuition directs diagnostic practices. 過去三十年，西方在女性主義思潮的帶動下，掀起了對語言性別主義的批判，同一時期，翻譯學朝文化研究的方向發展，使性別、語言與翻譯成為了互相影響、經常互相指涉的研究領域。本文採用描述性的研究進路，探討自由主義女性主義者所倡導的內包語言在基督教中文聖經譯本中的使用情況。

八十年代中，內包語言被引進到英文聖經翻譯，掀起了連串的討論。本文會在西方（尤其美國）學者的研究基礎上，從女性主義切入，釐清內包語言在聖經翻譯的語境中的本質，以及衍生出來的概念，然後將聖經主要的中文譯本 界分為傳統版本和內包版本。最後借用安德烈‧勒菲弗爾（André Lefevere）的理論，分析贊助者的意識形態如何支配中文聖經的內包版本。

The rise of China’s economic power and the end of US-Soviet rivalry has highlighted the importance of overall Sino-US relations and has made Sino-US interrelations in terms of security become more sophisticated and complicated. Although there obviously exist a number of issues in the Sino-US strategic relationship, my research takes two case studies for particular analysis. One issue, missile defense (MD), started during the presidency of Bill Clinton, but because of George W. Bush’s tough approach to China has become a critical issue in current Sino-US relations.

The paper reports a qualitative, interview-based study of organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) as perceived in non-subordinate colleagues by 20 Hong Kong Chinese managerial, professional and white-collar staff. Interviewees drew on their own observations of, and inferences about, specific workplace incidents to illustrate differences between authentic OCB on the one hand, and faked (pseudo-) OCB, which entailed colleagues feigning or espousing OCB while actually not transcending basic in-role requirements or even violating requirements. Multinationals have distinctive strategic orientations toward the host country when investing overseas: to explore the local market or to establish efficient manufacturing for export. Analyses of FDI operations in China suggest that local market oriented firms tend to rely on the joint venture mode while export oriented investors mostly choose to be wholly owned operations. Moreover, there are significant differences between local market oriented and export oriented firms across four different performance measures. Results of the study suggest that researchers should consider the difference in FDI's strategic orientation when attempting to identify success factors and recommending performance-enhancing strategies.

This study examines equal opportunities for women employees in two four retail companies in Hong Kong; two of the companies Japanese-owned (Tairo and Okadaya). Research conducted in Hong Kong shows that gender inequality persists in the workplace. This paper initially examines various explanations for gender inequality put forward by scholars. Since EO legislation - the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) - was introduced in Hong Kong in 1996, little research has done to explain why gender inequality persists after SDO has been implemented. This paper studies the relationship between job turnover and technical efficiency of state-owned enterprise (SOEs) in Shanghai's manufacturing sector during the period of 1989-1992. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to compute measure of technical efficiency for each enterprise. Our findings indicate that, for non-expanding SOEs, the relationship between job turnover (i.e., downsizing) and technical efficiency is a U-shaped one such that efficiency declines at low levels of turnover,but after a certain level, it starts to increase. In addition, we show that small non-expanding SOEs (i.e., with employment size less than 100) start to increase their efficiency at a lower …

The ability to reflect upon and manage their internal functioning may very much help teams contribute to their organizations. This study suggests that managing conflict cooperatively and productively provides a foundation for effective team task reflexivity. 200 employees in 100 work teams in China completed measures of their team's cooperative, competitive, and avoiding approach conflict management and task reflexivity and 100 managers indicated the team's in-role and extra-role (organizational citizenship behavior) performance. Results support the theorizing that conflict management can contribute to team task reflexivity. The burgeoning consumerism in emerging market economies has significant implications for both multinational corporations and local companies. Based on a survey in four cities in China, this study examines the effect of consumer beliefs and attitudes towards marketing on satisfaction. The results suggest that attitudes towards marketing activities and their beliefs about marketing have significant effect on consumer satisfaction, but these effects are not uniform across marketing mix variables. Implications for future research and marketing operations in Emerging Markets are explored.

Given the explosive growth of customer information, data mining can potentially discover new knowledge to improve decision making in marketing. This study proposes a data mining approach to modeling direct marketing response using Bayesian Networks(BN) and Evolutionary Programming (EC) and applies these methods to direct marketing data. The results suggest this approach generate superior results than the conventional method of logistic regression. Future research in this area should devote more attention to applying data mining methods to solving complex problems facing today's businesses.

Collective Myopia As The Blocking Mechanism To Organizational Learning, Mei Ling, May Wong

This study aims to identify the blocking n1echanisms for Japanese expatriate managers to acquire double-loop organizational learning in their international assignments. Two Japanese multinational department stores - Morioka and Chubuya - were studied in Japan to illustrate how the Japanese expatriate managers were trapped by the collective myopia. The major blocking mechanisms identified are common Japanese practices which include parent company community spirit, dozoku inhabitants, parent company's translators, and desire for normality.
