Rethinking Institutional Repositories - Innovations In Management, Collections, And Inclusion, Josh C. Cromwell Jan 2023

Rethinking Institutional Repositories - Innovations In Management, Collections, And Inclusion, Josh C. Cromwell

Faculty Bookshelf

Chapter 21 of this book, titled Let’s Say Yes: Considerations and Impact of Using Institutional Repositories to Promote Non-Traditional Works, was written by KSU authors, Chelsee Dickson and Heather Hankins.

Over the past two decades, institutional repositories (IRs) have become commonplace among academic libraries. As of 2022, the Open Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) contains entries for 771 IRs in the United States alone, not to mention the proliferation of IRs at colleges and universities around the world.1 Librarians have grown accustomed to making the case for why their institution needs an IR, and based on the data, it …

Opportunities For Reducing Expenses Through Digital Innovation: The Case Of An Insurance Company, Craig Paul Pillay, James Kariuki Njenga Apr 2021

Opportunities For Reducing Expenses Through Digital Innovation: The Case Of An Insurance Company, Craig Paul Pillay, James Kariuki Njenga

The African Journal of Information Systems

Operational inefficiencies not only affect the quality of a company's offerings but also increase its overhead expenses. Insurance companies have some of the highest overhead costs, which often are transferred to customers as premiums for insurance products. While companies are adopting digital innovation to reduce expenses by optimizing their operational functions, not all companies are ready for the digital transformation journey, which risks their existence. The unreadiness exists despite evidence that digital innovation has many potential benefits to these companies. Nine participants from six business units, all with 133 employees, were interviewed for this study. This research uses a single, …

On The Yellow Brick Road, A Path To Enterprise Architecture Maturity, Avsharn Bachoo Oct 2019

On The Yellow Brick Road, A Path To Enterprise Architecture Maturity, Avsharn Bachoo

The African Journal of Information Systems

This study concentrated on the relationship between the Enterprise Architecture (EA) maturity of an organization and the business value associated with it in the South African financial services environment. It was developed within the critical realism philosophy, which states that mechanisms generate events by accentuating the underlying EA mechanisms that lead to business value, as well as provide insights into the opportunities and challenges organizations experienced as they progressed to higher levels of maturity. Constructed using the resource-based view of the firm as the underlying theoretical framework, this research examined EA as an intangible resource and maturity as a source …

Undergraduate Student Works In Institutional Repositories: An Analysis Of Coverage, Prominence And Discoverability, Angel Clemons, Tyler Goldberg Jul 2019

Undergraduate Student Works In Institutional Repositories: An Analysis Of Coverage, Prominence And Discoverability, Angel Clemons, Tyler Goldberg

The Southeastern Librarian

Institutional repositories (IRs) have evolved to showcase a wide-variety of authors and types of material. The early years of IR development focused on collecting and presenting faculty research, primarily in the form of research papers. Graduate theses and dissertations soon began to be incorporated into the scope of IR collection policies and have become as common in IRs as faculty research. Undergraduate research, however, appears to be much less common than faculty or graduate work. This paper examines the extent to which undergraduate student works (USW) are represented in the IRs of U.S. colleges and universities that use bepress’ Digital …

"You're Hired!" - An Analysis Of The Perceptions And Behaviors Of Library Job Candidates On Job Offer Negotiations, Leo S. Lo, Jason B. Reed Jul 2016

"You're Hired!" - An Analysis Of The Perceptions And Behaviors Of Library Job Candidates On Job Offer Negotiations, Leo S. Lo, Jason B. Reed

The Southeastern Librarian

Negotiation is a method for people to settle differences and achieve solutions. While formal negotiations can take the forms of conflict resolutions or licensing agreement with vendor negotiations, there are many informal forms of negotiation that take place every day. For example, two co-workers discussing the respective work responsibilities in a project that they are working on is a form of negotiation; a librarian asking for the supervisor’s approval to attend a professional conference is also a form of negotiation; two friend deciding where to go to eat lunch is a form of negotiation. As the purpose of negotiation is …

Our Love Won’T Fade Away: Processing The Jerry Garcia Memorial Altar Collection, Scott J. Carlson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

On August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead was found dead of a heart attack. Four days later, a public memorial for Garcia, held in Golden Gate Park, was attended by the band and almost 25,000 fans. Underneath an enormous portrait of Garcia, fans deposited letters, artwork, pictures, and a vast array of personal offerings in memory of the late musician. The "altar" materials, as they were called, were eventually gifted to the University of California Santa Cruz, now home of the Grateful Dead’s archives. Out of context, the 3,100 individual items of the collection might seem haphazard …

We Want To Do It Our Way: The Neutralisation Approach To Managing Information Systems Security By Small Businesses, Kennedy Njenga, Pierre Jordaan

The African Journal of Information Systems

Small businesses thrive in the developing economy of South Africa and address the important issue of unemployment and poverty that exists in the country. A large number of these businesses can be found in the province of Gauteng due to the large and diverse economic contribution the province delivers to the economy of South Africa. With the increased use of Information Systems (IS) by small businesses across the Gauteng province and in South Africa generally, there is increasingly constant exposure to information security risks. Interestingly, standards such as NISTIR 7621 specifically tailored to small businesses and which could offer great …

Faster Digital Output: Using Student Workers To Create Metadata For A Grant Funded Project, Emily Gainer, Michelle Mascaro Jan 2012

Faster Digital Output: Using Student Workers To Create Metadata For A Grant Funded Project, Emily Gainer, Michelle Mascaro

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Archives and special collections experience pressure to digitize and make more of their holdings available online. Creating online digital collections is time consuming. Not only do the individual analog items need to be scanned, but descriptive metadata must be created for web searches and for historical context. According to the 2004 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) survey, archives cite lack of staff time as one of the top two hindrances for undertaking digitization projects.1 Often, archives and special collections cannot hire additional professional staff to carry out digital projects. Keeping up with traditional processing and handling reference requests …

Easing The Learning Curve: The Creation Of Digital Learning Objects For Use In Special Collections Student Training, Judith A. Wiener

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Low-staffed and often under-funded, academic libraries have traditionally relied upon student labor to maintain library services and to complete a seemingly unending workload. The use of students within the archival or special collections setting is no different. Special Collections departments often use students to complete tasks that could be reserved to the realm of professional staff. These include processing collections, preservation and conservation work, digitizing, and providing reference assistance.

When Not All Papers Are Paper: A Case Study In Digital Archivy, Catherine Stollar Peters Jan 2006

When Not All Papers Are Paper: A Case Study In Digital Archivy, Catherine Stollar Peters

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Hypertext poet Deena Larsen is worried about the potential loss of her digital poetry, but she has a plan to save it. In a 2004 article, “The Uncertain Fate of Scholarly Artifacts in a Digital Age,” Larsen revealed her plans for preserving her hypertext work Marble Springs. “Ms. Larsen started collecting old Macintosh computers so people will always be able to read Marble Springsin its original format. She has 100 computers in her two-bedroom apartment.” Although Larsen’s two-bedroom mausoleum of circa 1990s technology is one strategy for saving born-digital hypertext works, it is probably not the best. An …

What A Woven Web: Archives, Websites, And The Coming Legacy Of "Light Gray Literature", Earle E. Spamer Jan 2002

What A Woven Web: Archives, Websites, And The Coming Legacy Of "Light Gray Literature", Earle E. Spamer

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Website content is notoriously ephemeral. Its electronic existence is in communication with its components at one moment, gone at the next. A solution to preserving that content is to "permanently archive" the entire website. This raises concerns about technological accessibility and longevity. A website can also manifest itself as a dispersed collection of printed pages and downloaded electronic files redistributed amongst the paper and electronic records of individuals and organizations. What distinguishes that which is the record of an individual or an organization from the flotsam of reprinted and hyperlinked ephemera? Are archivists preparing appraisal methods for websites and their …
