Student Perspectives And Learning Outcomes From Self-Guided Ensemble Rehearsal, David M. Hedgecoth Jan 2018

Student Perspectives And Learning Outcomes From Self-Guided Ensemble Rehearsal, David M. Hedgecoth

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to examine democratic practice in a large ensemble setting. A large (N = 63) auditioned concert band served as the case study for the present investigation. A series of self-guided rehearsals provided the opportunity for the ensemble members to engage in democratic musical governance without a conductor. Mixed-method methodologies were utilized to gain deep insight into interpersonal and musical events that took place during the group’s rehearsals. Several findings provide new insight into how democratic practices function in large ensembles, and how these practices impact music education instruction. Specifically, I analyzed the impact …

Nature-Ization Nyc, Sarah Collins Jan 2018

Nature-Ization Nyc, Sarah Collins

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Manhattan once was a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, forests, boulders, farms, and spaced-out homes. Over the years Manhattan has been built up and there is a sense of absence in New York City. New Yorkers walking through the city are confronted with excessive pedestrian traffic, and do not have the luxury of experiencing the sounds, smells, and natural landscape that exists a few miles outside of the densely populated city. I am proposing a series of typologies that bring a new nature to the city and change the way one walks through the city. Pathways or hiking trails will …

Repeatability Of The Heart Rate Variability Threshold During Treadmill Exercise, Shane Chambers Jan 2018

Repeatability Of The Heart Rate Variability Threshold During Treadmill Exercise, Shane Chambers

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Purpose: Heart rate variability threshold (HRVT) is a clinical parameter used to gain insight into autonomic balance. Various studies have validated the use of cycle ergometers in determining HRVT, although the literature lacks evidence that treadmill use is a viable means of determining this threshold. We examined the repeatability of HRVT occurrence using standard deviation of normal R-R intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences of continuous R-R intervals (RMSSD), and standard deviation of instantaneous beat intervals (SD1) in college aged males using treadmill exercise to see if this is a reliable method of threshold determination.

Methods: Ten healthy, …
