Sudden cardiac events are the leading cause of death among firefighters, and it is acknowledged that most ischemic events are due to an occlusive thrombus formation. In addition, due to the demanding job requirements and shift work, firefighters commonly overuse caffeine. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential effects of caffeine on the hemostatic response to simulated firefighting activity. Twelve healthy male firefighters (age, 31.3 ± 5.4 yrs; weight, 94.2 ± 13.1 kg; BMI, 28.7 ± 2.9 kg·m-2) participated in this study, wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Introduction: Research has shown exercise elicits a hemostatic response affecting coagulation and fibrinolysis. Furthermore, prior research has determined circadian fluctuations exist where clotting potential increases in the morning as a result of increased PAI-1 and decreased tPA which is further exacerbated by exercise. These circadian fluctuations and exercise responses have the potential to be accentuated by poor sleep. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of sleep restriction on tPA activity, PAI-1 activity, and Factor VIII antigen activity (FVIII) while resting and after exercise.

Purpose: To determine the hemostatic response after acute aerobic exercise in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Methods: Eighteen males were recruited from the university and local community. Individuals who presented evidence of cardiovascular, pulmonary, or metabolic disease were excluded. Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) > 5 was criteria for OSA. Subjects performed a treadmill exercise test at 35% and 70% predicted VO2reserve during the morning hours. Pre exercise blood samples were obtained after 15 minutes supine rest and within two minutes following exercise. Research has continued to provide conflicting results of caffeine’s effect on acute coronary events; although it is now apparent that a single nucleotide polymorphism at intron 1 of the cytochrome P450 (CYP1A2) gene may explain these equivocal findings. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine the effects of acute garlic supplementation on fibrinolytic potential and the fibrinolytic response to exercise in young healthy trained males. Methods: 18 healthy trained males (Age = 20.9 ± 2.2 years, Height = 178 ± 7.7 cm, Weight = 75.5 ± 9.6 kg, VO2max = 59.8 ± 6.7 ml kg-1 min-1) performed a graded treadmill test to volitional exhaustion. Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between blood coagulation and fibrinolytic potential and physical activity. Physical activity levels to predict blood coagulation and fibrinolytic potential were also examined. Methods: Twenty-three pregnant women, aged 19-34 yrs, had a fasted blood draw between 6 and 10 a.m. analyzed for tPA antigen, tPA activity, PAI-1 antigen, and vWF antigen. Trimester specific volume of leisure time physical activity was assessed by the Modifiable Activity Questionnaire (MAQ) and converted to METmin/wk. Based on MAQ results, women were grouped as meeting (“active”) or not meeting (“sedentary”) physical activity recommendations established by American College of Obstetrics and …
