This paper compares the challenges that Deaf business people face in the US and China. The goal is to understand the experience of Deaf people in each country and to see what each country can learn from the other. To understand the experience of Deaf people in these countries, I will first look at the history of disability in each country and the challenges Deaf people face with gaining employment or becoming entrepreneurs. Then, I compare the cultural attitudes of each country towards Deaf people and the policy frameworks each country uses to create opportunities for Deaf people. Finally, this …
Mapping Deaf America: Visualizing American Deaf Sociality Through Geographic Information Systems, Emily Nover
Mapping Deaf America: Visualizing American Deaf Sociality Through Geographic Information Systems, Emily Nover
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
In the study of the US deaf community, a noticeable gap is evident in the absence of an accessible map that presents current data about the community. This project takes an American perspective, embracing the term “Deaf America” as a framework that highlights the unique social network, geographic nuances, and sensory experiences of the deaf community in the United States. These elements are crucial to understanding the extensive network of the deaf community in the US. However, there is a lack of quality visual representations of these elements. This project seeks to bridge this gap by collecting data and leveraging …

Anthropaean Storytelling, Community, And The Ripples Of The Climate Crisis, Jonathan Summers
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The climate crisis has grown into a dangerous global threat, pushing our planet to the point of ecological no return. We face the certainty of increasingly destructive climate disasters and social upheaval, threatening our societal and biological survival. The next few years will prove critical to the future welfare of our species and our planet. However, we are not without our defenses. Through the lens of fictional short stories, this capstone concentrates on community and storytelling, two deeply human behaviors that could be two of our greatest tools in the struggle against climate change. Human beings are social creatures at …
Translanguaging And Ethnolinguistic Identity: A Case Study Of A Hispanic Latine Family, Destiny Zhinin
Translanguaging And Ethnolinguistic Identity: A Case Study Of A Hispanic Latine Family, Destiny Zhinin
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This case study focuses on the impact of the presence or absence of translanguaging in the educational environments of a Hispanic Latine family on their self-perceived ethnolinguistic identities. Translanguaging is the process where multilinguals use the full potential of their linguistic repertoire in their discourses. This includes the various vocabulary words, dialects, gestures, and other characteristics of their languages (Garcia, 2012, pg. 311). English monolingualism (knowing or only using English) discriminates against racial and ethnic minorities, labeling them incompetent, inferior, or even “un-American,” regardless of how systematically correct their English is. In contrast, translanguaging maximizes the opportunity for teachers of …

Association Of Psychological Quality Of Life Scores And Adverse Experiences In Stop2 Multi-Center Clinical Trial, Blessed Mbogo
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Background: Prior research has observed the relationship between psychological stressors and onset of chronic diseases as well as increased severity. This begs the question of whether psychometric qualities in Health-Related Quality of Life instruments can preliminarily predict participant risk of pathology or adverse events (AE) in clinical trials. Specifically, in studies of cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs due to mucus accumulation. Methods: The study design was an ancillary analysis of a clinical trial (STOP-2) examining duration of intravenous antimicrobial treatment for pulmonary exacerbations in CF (n=908). Demographic characteristics, genotype, clinical …

Coda Identity - Why Our Stories Are Important: A Qualitative Look At The Personal Narratives Of Adult Hearing Children Of Deaf Adults, Emma Tripp
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Children of Deaf adults (Coda) possess bicultural identities which may play a significant role in their mental health journeys. Bicultural identities can be a source of both stress and pride. Harmony between multiple cultural identities is associated with more positive mental health outcomes (Tikhonov et al., 2019). Codas belong to an under researched population of Deaf communities, further mystifying the inner worlds of Codas. This preliminary study aims to document the personal narratives of Codas’ lived experiences and perceptions as individuals with bicultural identities by thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with five Codas in hopes to identify areas of future …
The Lived Experiences Of Deaf People In Carceral Settings, Grace Lester
The Lived Experiences Of Deaf People In Carceral Settings, Grace Lester
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
There is a paucity of research that explores the deaf experience within carceral settings, and a lack of large, rigorously designed studies that provide conclusive evidence of this phenomenon. Similarly, policy development regarding the abolition of, or reformations to, the corrections system in the United States rarely addresses the needs of deaf people within this system. A lack of understanding of the experiences of deaf individuals creates a barrier to the assurance that justice is provided equitably through effective, accessible services and facilities which carceral structures may be inherently unequipped to provide. Through semi-structured interviews, this preliminary study inquired formerly …
Sand Escarpments As A Potential Barrier To The Nesting Distribution Of Sea Turtles, Dakota Ronco
Sand Escarpments As A Potential Barrier To The Nesting Distribution Of Sea Turtles, Dakota Ronco
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Sea turtles are a part of both the marine and terrestrial ecosystems as primary and secondary consumers. By laying nests on the beaches and migrating across the ocean, sea turtles are significant in maintaining the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) flux between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Nests bring nutrients into the sand by decomposing unhatched eggs and egg remains. The distribution of their nests is significant in getting insights into the population density of sea turtles and what drives the nesting location, which ultimately regulates nutrient flux. The location of their nests is driven by sandy beach ecosystem structures, especially active …

Exploring The Experiences Of Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Students Seeking Healthcare At Gallaudet University, Shane Carrizales
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Currently, there is not much known about the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (HH) college student population's experience of learning about and navigating the healthcare system both as young adults and as college students. When a student starts college, especially further away from their home, they will get less support from their family which leaves them to rely on their health literacy. As an added challenge, Deaf/HH individuals often experience additional communication barriers. The purpose of this project was to explore the experiences of Deaf/hard of hearing students seeking healthcare at Gallaudet University. This researcher facilitated two workshops that provided education in …
Analysis Of Microbial Abundance On Marine Snow In The Deep Ocean, Matthew Qilan Thompson
Analysis Of Microbial Abundance On Marine Snow In The Deep Ocean, Matthew Qilan Thompson
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The ocean plays a critical role in the carbon cycle, with phytoplankton serving as a source of energy and nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) to larger organisms in upper trophic levels. Additionally, marine snow, a cluster of components including dead zooplankton, organic carbon debris, and polymers as carbohydrates, proteins, and DNA, transport these nutrients and associated microorganisms to the deeper parts of the ocean. However, the relationship between microbial abundance and particle sizes of marine snow across the water column is not well understood. Previous studies suggest that microbial abundance is lower in the bathypelagic zone (1,000m - 4,000m) …

Online Stories Empowering Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Transgender And Nonbinary Communities, Myles Barrett
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The mental and physical health issues of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Transgender and Nonbinary (TNB) communities have been neglected for far too long. The risk of suicide and mental and physical health issues in Deaf and Hard of Hearing TNB communities is alarmingly high due to issues surrounding family life, school, healthcare, lack of accessibility, and anti-trans legislation. Research indicates that social support shown through positive representation, encouraging interactions, and accessible resources within one’s community can act as a buffer against the mental health issues that Deaf and Hard of Hearing TNB individuals face. However, many of these …

Electrodermal Activity In Response To Stress Reduction: Virtual Reality Experience In Hydrotherapy And Non-Hydrotherapy Environments, Nthabeleng Macdonald
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Hydrotherapy, a holistic alternative medicine, uses methods like water therapy, cold water immersion, and balneotherapy to treat physical and mental illnesses while inducing tranquility (Bahadorfar, 2014). In this study, the water therapy approach was used, but with a unique twist. Rather than traditional hydrotherapy involving direct contact with water, participants were fully immersed in a virtual reality water environment. This study investigated whether immersing individuals with psychological stress in an underwater environment via virtual reality (VR) reduces their stress levels as compared to a non-hydrotherapy virtual city environment. The effects of underwater scenery versus non-hydrotherapy city scenery individuals experiencing stress …
The Trojan Horse Of The Paddy Field: Determining The Genetic Origins Of Seed Shattering In Spanish Weedy Rice, Eric Heinze
The Trojan Horse Of The Paddy Field: Determining The Genetic Origins Of Seed Shattering In Spanish Weedy Rice, Eric Heinze
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Weedy rice, or red rice, is an agricultural weed that has evolved independently in different parts of the world from cultivated rice. Significant crop damage has resulted from weed infestations, leading to a loss of income for farmers and a severe reduction in crop yield. Seed shattering is one of the most distinctive and problematic characteristics of weedy rice, as it allows seeds to disperse and persist in soil for long periods and limit the effectiveness of current weed control efforts. While previous studies have identified a mutation causing a reduction in shattering between wild and cultivated rice, the exact …

An autoethnographic framework is utilized wherein I reflexively analyzed my own choices for adopting an animal companion during the pandemic …
Clarifying Drug Reaction Terminology: Insights From Deaf College Students Allergic To Penicillin, Andrew Makarewicz
Clarifying Drug Reaction Terminology: Insights From Deaf College Students Allergic To Penicillin, Andrew Makarewicz
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Penicillin is considered to be the most frequently reported drug allergy, with roughly 10% of the U.S. population reporting an allergy (Lee, 2020; Sakoulas et al., 2019). However, current research suggests that more than 90% of people who report a penicillin allergy are actually not truly allergic (Blumenthal et al., 2015; Pongdee & Li, 2018). Confusion about side effects and allergic responses is a common way for penicillin allergies to be falsely reported (Stone et al., 2020). The Deaf community may experience this confusion at a higher rate due to health literacy barriers that likely hinder their learning and understanding …

Animal-Assisted Programs In Deaf Education, Alexis Wright
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Dr. Boris Levinson first recognized animal-assisted therapy as a child psychologist in the 1970s (Fine, Beck, & Ng, 2019). After this recognition, there has been an increased usage of animal-assisted interventions (AAI), leading to more research in this field (Fine, Beck, & Ng, 2019). Many studies have shown the effects of animal-assisted programs in classrooms (Prothmann, Ettrich, and Prothmann, 2009, as cited in Grandin, Fine, O'Haire, Carlisle, & Bowers, 2015; Bassette & Taber-Doughty, 2016; Kirnan, Siminerio, & Wong, 2016; Kropp & Shupp, 2017), but none of these have focused on Deaf schools and programs. This study aims to partially fill …

Coloration Of Western Alaskan Lakes From Spectral Data Correlates With Environmental Factors, Annemarie Timling
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region of Alaska consists of over 100,000 small lakes; it is one of the largest lake-dense regions of Alaska. These small lakes are critical aquatic ecosystems that provide habitats for wildlife and play an important role in carbon and nutrient cycling. Lakes in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta have a wide range of visible and near-infrared satellite spectra, which can vary over small spatial scales. These spectral differences may provide insight into the environmental properties of these small shallow lakes. Therefore, we want to investigate the relationship between the spectral data and environmental differences in these lakes. …

Social networking sites (SNS) have become increasingly popular in modern society; however, there is insufficient research into the impacts of SNS on middle-aged and older Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) individuals. D/HH SNS users belong to the Baby Boomer generation or Generation X (born 1946-1980) were recruited for this study. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, with a survey (n=32) and interviews (n=3), to examine primary reasons for use, perceived accessibility of interactions, the relationship between SNS use and life satisfaction, and noted societal changes. Most participants reported using Facebook and Instagram, which were primarily used for social interaction, information seeking, and …
Time-Efficient Algorithm For The Order-Statistic Operations In Lattice Data Structure, Joseph Mendis
Time-Efficient Algorithm For The Order-Statistic Operations In Lattice Data Structure, Joseph Mendis
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Data structures are an essential part of almost all software programs. The primary operations of most data structures are searching, insertion, deletion, and finding the Kth smallest element. To be of practical use, operations on data structures should be fast and should not use much memory space; in other words, the time and space complexities should not be enormous. This research project provides an algorithm, called FindKth, for the order-statistic operations of finding the ATth smallest element in Lattice Data Structures. In the average case, our algorithm is of time complexity O(n3/2), and it is of time complexity O(n) for …
