Sociocultural Determinants Of Risky Sexual Behaviors Among Adult Latinas: A Longitudinal Study Of A Community-Based Sample, Patria Rojas, Hui Huang, Tan Li, Gira J. Ravelo, Mariana Sanchez, Christyl Dawson, Judith Brook, Mariano Kanamori, Mario De La Rosa Nov 2016

Sociocultural Determinants Of Risky Sexual Behaviors Among Adult Latinas: A Longitudinal Study Of A Community-Based Sample, Patria Rojas, Hui Huang, Tan Li, Gira J. Ravelo, Mariana Sanchez, Christyl Dawson, Judith Brook, Mariano Kanamori, Mario De La Rosa

All Faculty

Few studies have examined the sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behavior trajectories among adult Latinas. To longitudinally examine the link between sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behaviors, we followed a sample of adult Latina mother-daughter dyads (n = 267) across a 10-year span through four waves of data collection. The present study investigates how risky sexual behavior (operationalized as sex under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, sex without a condom, or multiple sex partners) is affected by: (a) socioeconomic conditions; (b) mental health; (c) medical health; (d) acculturation to U.S. culture; (e) interpersonal support; (f) relationship stress; (g) …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With The Adult Achievement Of Substance-Using Adolescents: Findings From The National Longitudinal Study Of Adolescent To Adult Health, Dana G. Farrell Nov 2016

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With The Adult Achievement Of Substance-Using Adolescents: Findings From The National Longitudinal Study Of Adolescent To Adult Health, Dana G. Farrell

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The literature has well-documented the deleterious effect of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use on adolescent development and future outcomes. Despite these devastating results, some adolescents are able to attain high achievement as adults, despite their earlier AOD use. Secondary quantitative analyses were conducted on nationally-representative data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Longitudinal data, collected at Wave I (1994-1995), and Wave IV (2007-2008), were analyzed from a sample of 4,266 American high school students between the ages of 13-19 years. The majority of high school students in the sample self-reported AOD use (n=2,833, 66.4%), compared …

Increasing The Elicitation Of Truthful Information From Young Suspects: An Empirical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temporal Discounting, Andrea Arndorfer Nov 2016

Increasing The Elicitation Of Truthful Information From Young Suspects: An Empirical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temporal Discounting, Andrea Arndorfer

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The criminal justice system relies heavily on eliciting truthful information from suspects to solve crimes. A paramount problem with this approach involves the questioning of young suspects. Numerous studies support the conclusion that youth is a risk factor for providing false information during police questioning. The present study examined the influence of temporal discounting (the tendency for individual’s behavior to be influenced more strongly by proximal than distal factors; Berns, Laibson, & Loewenstein, 2007; Critchfield & Kollins, 2001) and other developmental factors (i.e., impulse control, future orientation, and sensation seeking) thought to underlie youths’ increased interrogative vulnerability. In line with …

From Reciprocity To Interdependence: Mass Incarceration And Service-Learning, Phyllis M. Ryder Oct 2016

From Reciprocity To Interdependence: Mass Incarceration And Service-Learning, Phyllis M. Ryder

Community Literacy Journal

This essay considers the difficulty of seeing systems of oppression—a challenging first step of writing for social change. I argue that service-learning faculty and public writing scholars have relied on outdated ways of thinking about racism and oppression, treating social issues as isolated instances of discrimination. Instead, by drawing from Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, I argue that we need to recognize that mass incarceration has created a new a racial caste system and is the root cause uniting many social problems. Mass incarceration and neoliberalism work together to exclude millions of people from economic and civic life, stain …

Building Infrastructures For Community Engagement At The University Of Louisville: Graduate Models For Cultivating Stewardship, Keri E. Mathis, Megan Faver Hartline, Beth A. Boehm, Mary P. Sheridan Oct 2016

Building Infrastructures For Community Engagement At The University Of Louisville: Graduate Models For Cultivating Stewardship, Keri E. Mathis, Megan Faver Hartline, Beth A. Boehm, Mary P. Sheridan

Community Literacy Journal

From our perspectives at the University of Louisville, we address the need to provide structures for graduate student participation in community-engaged scholarship. Architectures of participation such as the ones we describe in this piece—the Community Engagement Academy and the Digital Media Academy—offer graduate students the opportunity to practice designing and implementing community engagement projects within interdisciplinary and disciplinary sites. The models we provide were designed to make the invisible work of community engagement visible and to create low barriers of entry for graduate students to become stewards of their disciplines as well as stewards of their communities. Such opportunities, we …

The Field View: An Initial Examination Of An Exploratory Eyewitness Identification Procedure, Melissa Kavetski Jul 2016

The Field View: An Initial Examination Of An Exploratory Eyewitness Identification Procedure, Melissa Kavetski

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field view is an identification procedure that was recently acknowledged in a national report assessing eyewitness identifications. However, the field view has not been empirically examined to date. In fact, very little is known regarding the effectiveness of the procedure. Because it is an exploratory procedure - used by police when they do not have a suspect in mind - it is important to determine how the field view fares in comparison to the traditional procedures such as lineups and showups, whereby police do have a suspect. Using a controlled, lab-based methodology, Study 1 examined correct and false identifications …

Peers As An Academic Resource: An Investigation Of An Afterschool Program To Socialize At-Risk Students With Disabilities Into Greater Academic Engagement, Cynthia Pellegrini-Lafont Jun 2016

Peers As An Academic Resource: An Investigation Of An Afterschool Program To Socialize At-Risk Students With Disabilities Into Greater Academic Engagement, Cynthia Pellegrini-Lafont

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most evident signs that a child is on the path to dropping out of [BT1] school is disengagement from school (Kortering & Christenson, 2009). Given the amount of time that young people spend with their peers and the influence that peers have (Monahan, Steinberg, & Caufman, 2009), there is a need to better understand the role that peers play in the decision to drop out of school (Farmer, Estell, Leug, Trott, Biship, & Caims, 2003). Using Ericson’s stages of psychosocial development (1956), social identity theory, and self-categorization theory as a framework, an afterschool program in the form …
