Vision-Based Tracking Of A Dynamic Target With Application To Multi-Axis Position Control, Carlos A. Montes, Chan Wong, John C. Ziegert, Laine Mears

Publications

Two sub-pixel resolution approaches to measure in-plane displacements and in-plane rotation of a known target, through image processing, are described in this research. A dynamic known target is displayed on a pixel grid, which is attached to one end of the kinematic chain of an XYθZ stage; the latter represents the experimental testbed. At the other end of the kinematic chain, a digital monochrome camera is fixed to the bottom of the stage and provides 3D position information used as the feedback signal to the vision-based control system in charge of the tool’s motion. The illuminated pixels on the display …

Be Your Own Architect: Manage Renovation Projects Internally - Part Ii, Eric C. Shoaf

Publications

Larger library building projects usually require an architect to manage design and construction, but these days many libraries find that the results of space planning often are implemented in smaller less-expensive pieces rather than a single large project. Many of these projects involve repurposing space freed from shelving or other uses, where the total of the project is to remove the shelves and
place new furniture. Further, many have realized that architects and engineers
are expensive, and when it comes to renovating an open space, it may be
possible to use internal library staff to complete the project. Here are …

A Spectro-Astrometric Measurement Of Brackett Gamma Emission In Herbig Ae/Be Stars, Thomas S. Rice, Sean D. Brittain Jul 2012

A Spectro-Astrometric Measurement Of Brackett Gamma Emission In Herbig Ae/Be Stars, Thomas S. Rice, Sean D. Brittain

Publications

In T Tauri stars, the Brackett gamma line strength is a reliable indicator of accretion luminosity. Among intermediate mass young stars, Herbig Ae stars also show this correlation, but in Herbig Be stars the Brgamma line flux significantly overpredicts accretion luminosity. This Brgamma excess in Herbig Be stars is thought to arise from a spatially extended outflow. Using commissioning data from the LUCIFER spectrograph on the 8.4-meter Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), we present a spectro-astrometric study of two Herbig Ae/Be stars, the HAe star MWC480 and the HBe star HD 259431. In both stars, an extended Brgamma source can be …

Co Emission In The Inner Disk Around Young Intermediate-Mass Stars, Matt L. Stevans, Sean D. Brittain Jul 2012

Co Emission In The Inner Disk Around Young Intermediate-Mass Stars, Matt L. Stevans, Sean D. Brittain

Publications

We present observations that indicate viscous heating contributes significantly to the surface heating of the inner disk region (0.1-5 AU) around young intermediate-mass stars, Herbig AeBe stars, when the inner disk is optically thick. Brgamma flux is known to scale with accretion rate around young stars. We find a trend between Brgamma and CO emissivity, a tracer 1, 500 K gas in the gaseous atmospheres of less evolved inner disk regions in a sample of 25 Herbig AeBe stars, the higher mass analog of T Tauri stars. Evolved Herbig circumstellar disks do not follow this trend as closely. A thermal …

Context. Observations of the atomic and molecular line emission associated with jets and outflows emitted by young stellar objects provide sensitive diagnostics of the excitation conditions, and can be used to trace the various evolutionary stages they pass through as they evolve to become main sequence stars. Aims. To understand the relevance of atomic and molecular cooling in shocks, and how accretion and ejection efficiency evolves with the evolutionary state of the sources, we will study the far-infrared counterparts of bright optical jets associated with Class I and II sources in Taurus (T Tau, DG Tau A, DG Tau B, …

Exposure To Host Ligands Correlates With Colocalization Of Gal/Galnac Lectin Subunits In Lipid Rafts And Phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-Bisphosphate Signaling In Entamoeba Histolytica, Amanda M. Goldston, Rhonda R. Powell, Amrita B. Koushik, Lesly A. Temesvari Jun 2012

Exposure To Host Ligands Correlates With Colocalization Of Gal/Galnac Lectin Subunits In Lipid Rafts And Phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-Bisphosphate Signaling In Entamoeba Histolytica, Amanda M. Goldston, Rhonda R. Powell, Amrita B. Koushik, Lesly A. Temesvari

Publications

Entamoeba histolytica is an intestinal parasite that causes dysentery and liver abscess. Parasite cell surface receptors, such as the Gal/GalNAc lectin, facilitate attachment to host cells and extracellular matrix. The Gal/GalNAc lectin binds to galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues on host components and is composed of heavy (Hgl), intermediate (Igl), and light (Lgl) subunits. Although Igl is constitutively localized to lipid rafts (cholesterol-rich membrane domains), Hgl and Lgl transiently associate with this compartment in a cholesterol-dependent fashion. In this study, trophozoites were exposed to biologically relevant ligands to determine if ligand binding influences the submembrane distribution of the subunits. Exposure …

We observed a sample of 20 representative Herbig Ae/Be stars and 5 A-type debris discs with PACS onboard Herschel, as part of the GAS in Protoplanetary Systems (GASPS) project. The observations were done in spectroscopic mode, and cover the far-infrared lines of [O i], [C ii], CO, CH+, H2O, and OH. We have a [Oi] 63 μm detection rate of 100% for the Herbig Ae/Be and 0% for the debris discs. The [Oi] 145 μm line is only detected in 25% and CO J = 18–17 in 45% (and fewer cases for higher J transitions) of the Herbig Ae/Be stars, …

We compute the intrinsic contributions to the Berry-phase mediated anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in electron- and hole-doped semiconductors in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field as well as Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. For both systems we find that the regime of chemical potential which supports the topological superconducting state in the presence of the superconducting proximity effect can be characterized by plateaus in the topological Hall and Nernst coefficients flanked by well-defined peaks marking the emergence of the topological regime. The plateaus arise from a clear momentum space separation between the region where the Berry curvature is …

Predicting Nonspecific Ion Binding Using Delphi, Marharyta Petukh, Maxim Zhenirovskyy, Chuan Li, Lin Li, Lin Wang, Emil Alexov

Publications

Ions are an important component of the cell and affect the corresponding biological macromolecules either via direct binding or as a screening ion cloud. Although some ion binding is highly specific and frequently associated with the function of the macromolecule, other ions bind to the protein surface nonspecifically, presumably because the electrostatic attraction is strong enough to immobilize them. Here, we test such a scenario and demonstrate that experimentally identified surface-bound ions are located at a potential that facilitates binding, which indicates that the major driving force is the electrostatics. Without taking into consideration geometrical factors and structural fluctuations, we …

This study was conducted to increase the bioactivity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides (LPPs) biotransformed by Aspergillus awamori. Comparedtothenon-A. awamori-fermented LPP, the growth effects of A. awamori-fermented LPP on Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus were four and two times higher after 3 days of fermentation, respectively. Increased 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and DNA protection activity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides were also achieved after A. awamori fermentation. Moreover, the relative content of glucose and arabinose in LPP after fermentation decreased from 58.82% to 22.60% and from 18.82% to 10.09%, respectively, with a concomitant increase in the relative contents of galactose, rhamnose, xylose, …

A Revision Of The Genus Kaszabister Mazur (Histeridae, Histerinae, Exosternini), Michael S. Caterino, Nicolas Degalllier, Slawomir Mazur, Alexey K. Tishechkin

Publications

We revise the four species of Kaszabister Mazur, 1972, one of which, Kaszabister barrigai sp. n., is described as new. The other species in the genus are K. rubellus (Erichson, 1834), K. ferrugineus (Kirsch, 1873) and K. carinatus (Lewis, 1888). The species are principally known from the subtropics of South America, with one in Central America. Lectotypes are designated for K. rubellus and K. ferrugineus, and a key is provided for all the species. Ants of the genus Solenopsis Westwood, mainly S. invicta Buren and S. saevissima (Smith), are documented as hosts of three of the four species.

Background

Accurate modeling of electrostatic potential and corresponding energies becomes increasingly important for understanding properties of biological macromolecules and their complexes. However, this is not an easy task due to the irregular shape of biological entities and the presence of water and mobile ions.

Results

Here we report a comprehensive suite for the well-known Poisson-Boltzmann solver, DelPhi, enriched with additional features to facilitate DelPhi usage. The suite allows for easy download of both DelPhi executable files and source code along with a makefile for local installations. The users can obtain the DelPhi manual and parameter files required for the corresponding …

The Potential Of Photo-Talks To Reveal The Development Of Scientific Discourses, Cassie Quigley, Gayle Buck Apr 2012

The Potential Of Photo-Talks To Reveal The Development Of Scientific Discourses, Cassie Quigley, Gayle Buck

Publications

This study explores the potential of a photo-elicitation technique, photo-talks (Serriere, 2010), for understanding how young girls understand, employ and translate new scientific discourses. Over the course of a nine week period, 24 kindergarten girls in an urban girls’ academy were observed, videotaped, photographed and interviewed while they were immersed into scientific discourse. This paper explicitly describes how their emerging discursive patterns were made visible through this methodological tool. The findings are presented in vignettes in three themes uncovered during our analysis which are the following: Presented the recollection of the scientific Discourse, Described the understanding of scientific Discourse, and …

Choline Supplementation And Dna Methylation In The Hippocampus And Prefrontal Cortex Of Rats Exposed To Alcohol During Development, Nicha K H Otero, Jennifer D. Thomas, Christopher Saski, Xiaoxia Xia, Sandra Kelly

Publications

BACKGROUND:

Some of the most frequent deficits seen in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and in animal models of FASD are spatial memory impairments and impaired executive functioning, which are likely related to alcohol-induced alterations of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC), respectively. Choline, a nutrient supplement, has been shown in a rat model to ameliorate some of alcohol's teratogenic effects, and this effect may be mediated through choline's effects on DNA methylation.

METHODS:

Alcohol was given by intragastric intubation to rat pups during the neonatal period (postnatal days 2 to 10) (ET group), which is equivalent to …

Energetic Feedback And 26al From Massive Stars And Their Supernovae In The Carina Region, R. Voss, P. Martin, R. Diehl, J. S. Vink, Dieter H. Hartmann, T. Preibisch

Publications

We study the populations of massive stars in the Carina region and their energetic feedback and ejection of 26Al. Methods. We did a census of the stellar populations in young stellar clusters within a few degrees of the Carina nebula. For each star we estimated the mass, based on the spectral type and the host cluster age. We used population synthesis to calculate the energetic feedback and ejection of 26Al from the winds of the massive stars and their supernova explosions. We used 7 years of INTEGRAL observations to measure the 26Al signal from the region. Results. The INTEGRAL 26Al …

Weak Localization In A Lateral Superlattice With Rashba And Dresselhaus Spin-Orbit Interaction, D C. Marinescu, Andrei Manolescu

Publications

We calculate the weak localization (WL) correction to the conductivity of a lateral superlattice (LSL) with Rashba (R)-Dresselhaus (D) spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The superlattice is modeled as a sequence of parallel wires that support tunneling between adjacent sites, leading to the formation of extended Bloch states along its axis and a miniband in the energy spectrum. Our results, obtained by calculating the eigenvalues of the Cooperon operator in the diffusion approximation, indicate that the electron dephasing rate that determines the antilocalization correction is enhanced by a term proportional with the LSL potential and the bandwidth. Within the same formalism, the …
