The Locations Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Measured By Comptel, Dieter H. Hartmann, R. Marc Kippen, James M. Ryan, Alanna Connors, Christoph Winkler, Lucien Kuiper, Martin Varendorff, Mark L. Mcconnell, Kevin Hurley, Wim Hermsen Jan 1998

The Locations Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Measured By Comptel, Dieter H. Hartmann, R. Marc Kippen, James M. Ryan, Alanna Connors, Christoph Winkler, Lucien Kuiper, Martin Varendorff, Mark L. Mcconnell, Kevin Hurley, Wim Hermsen

The COMPTEL instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is used to measure the locations of gamma-ray bursts through direct imaging of MeV photons. In a comprehensive search, we have detected and localized 29 bursts observed between 1991 April 19 and 1995 May 31. The average location accuracy of these events is 1.25◦ (1σ), including a systematic error of ∼0.5◦, which is verified through comparison with Interplanetary Network (IPN) timing annuli. The combination of COMPTEL and IPN measurements results in locations for 26 of the bursts with an average “error box” area of only ∼0.3 deg2 (1σ). We find that …

Boron In The Very Metal-Poor Star Bd -13 3442, D K. Duncan, L M. Rebull, E Primas, A M. Boesgaard, Constantine P. Deliyannis, L M. Hobbs, Jeremy R. King, S G. Ryan Jan 1998

Boron In The Very Metal-Poor Star Bd -13 3442, D K. Duncan, L M. Rebull, E Primas, A M. Boesgaard, Constantine P. Deliyannis, L M. Hobbs, Jeremy R. King, S G. Ryan

Publications

The Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been used to observe the boron 2500 A region of BD-13 3442. At a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-3.00, this is the most metal-poor star ever observed for B. Nearly 26 hours of exposure time resulted in a detection. Spectrum synthesis using the latest Kurucz model atmospheres yields an LTE boron abundance of log e(B)=0.01 +/- 0.20. This value is consistent with the linear relation of slope ~1.0 between log e(B[LTE]) and [Fe/H] found for 10 halo and disk stars by Duncan et al. 1997. Using the NLTE correction …

Condensation Of Carbon In Supernovae: Graphite In Meteorites, Donald D. Clayton Jan 1998

Condensation Of Carbon In Supernovae: Graphite In Meteorites, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

A new model for the carbon condensation chemistry within supernovae has been developed (1) showing that carbon condensates will occur even in gas having abundance ratio O/C >1. The escape from thermochemical bondage of C within CO occurs because the supernova radioactivity dissociates the CO molecule (2). We consider several immediate astrophysical consequences.

A New Synthetic Amphidiploid In Cucumis From A C. Sativus X C. Hystrix F1 Interspecific Hybrid, Jeffrey Adelberg, Jinfeng Chen, Jack E. Staub, Halina Skorupska, Billy Rhodes Jan 1998

A New Synthetic Amphidiploid In Cucumis From A C. Sativus X C. Hystrix F1 Interspecific Hybrid, Jeffrey Adelberg, Jinfeng Chen, Jack E. Staub, Halina Skorupska, Billy Rhodes

Publications

CT. A synthetic amphidiploid was developed through organogenesis in tissue culturefrom an interspecific F1hybrid betweenCucumis sativus L. andC. hystrix Chakr. The resultsfrom flow cytometry indicated that, on average, 7.3% of the regenerants with unique morphology were chromosome-doubled F1hybrids. The 2C DNA content of the original F1hybrid was1.17 pg, and the 4C DNA content was 2.35 pg. Frequency of chromosome doubling between thetwo genotypes used in this study varied considerably.
