Permanently Failing Organizations? Small Business Recovery After September 11, 2001, Leigh Graham
Publications and Research
Small businesses in Lower Manhattan after September 11, 2001, paint a telling portrait of vulnerability after disasters. This qualitative analysis of recovery for small retail and service firms with 50 or fewer employees is based on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and documentary research from September 2001 through 2005. A postdisaster emphasis on place-based assistance to firms conflicted with macro-level redevelopment plans for Lower Manhattan. Small business recovery was impeded as aid programs responded to a new sense of urgency, attachment to place, and prestorm conceptions of the neighborhood at the expense of addressing community-wide economic changes accelerated by the disaster. The Task Force has generally concluded that distance learning initiatives should only go forward with the full commitment of the college's leadership, made real by dedicated resources and personnel, and carried forward by organizational structures and policies designed to best deliver online education.
The Task Force surveyed John Jay faculty, students and administrators about their experiences with online learning at the college, finding an acceptance of distance learning and an anticipation of its expansion. To assist in furthering its mission, John Jay College engaged in the development of the following three year Strategic Plan for Information Technology during the spring semester of 2007. The planning effort was headed by the Planning Subcommittee (see Appendix-1) of the Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) and was designed to identify areas of need and opportunities for improvement within the existing College technology environment that would support the College’s achievement of the goals, objectives, and outcomes specified within the Comprehensive Action Plan 2005-2010. On March 23, 2007, the law review held a day-long symposium entitled, “Guantanamo Bay: The Global Effects of Wrongful Detention, Torture, and Unchecked Executive Power.” The symposium centered on the legal issues surrounding the detention of individuals by the United States government in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. An Empirical Test Of Terrie Moffitt’S Developmental Taxonomy Of Delinquency, Jessica M. Saunders
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Terrie Moffitt (1993) hypothesized that there will be three distinct types of juveniles: (1) Life-course-persistent offenders, who begin their antisocial behavior at a young age and continue to offend over their lives; (2) Adolescence-limited offenders, who are involved in criminal behavior only through their adolescent years, and; (3) Abstainers, who do not engage in any delinquent behavior. This study tested both the theory and methodology using general growth mixture modeling.
The methodological results were conclusive whereas the theoretical ones were less clear. The different latent variable variance structures were freed and fixed to test the best model …
