The Education Of Women: Ideas And Vignettes, Heather Pitts Dec 2002

The Education Of Women: Ideas And Vignettes, Heather Pitts

Resources

Looking at German girls and women in the eighteenth and even the nineteenth century, we see that most of them received very little formal education. Reading and writing and a basic, broad education were typical. In the higher social classes, girls learned conversational French, social dancing, and enough piano and voice to accompany or sing at parties. Young women were trained to become wives and mothers. For the lower-to middle-class women this meant learning household management and the raising of children, although lower-class women did it all themselves, whereas middle-class women delegated some of the work to servants and oversaw …

Level Oriented Formal Model For Asynchronous Circuit Verification And Its Efficient Analysis Method, Eric G. Mercer, Tomoya Kitai, Chris Myers, Yusuke Oguro, Tomohiro Yoneda Dec 2002

Level Oriented Formal Model For Asynchronous Circuit Verification And Its Efficient Analysis Method, Eric G. Mercer, Tomoya Kitai, Chris Myers, Yusuke Oguro, Tomohiro Yoneda

Faculty Publications

Using a level-oriented model for verification of asynchronous circuits helps users to easily construct formal models with high readability or to naturally model datapath circuits. On the other hand, in order to use such a model on large circuits, techniques to avoid the state explosion problem must be developed. This paper first introduces a level-oriented formal model based on time Petri nets, and then proposes its partial order reduction algorithm that prunes unnecessary state generation while guaranteeing the correctness of the verification.

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov Dec 2002

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov

Theses and Dissertations

Laser high-order harmonic generation in the presence of relatively weak interfering light is investigated. The interfering pulses intersect the primary harmonic-generating laser pulse at the laser focus. The interfering light creates a standing intensity and phase modulation on the field, which disrupts microscopic phase matching and shuts down local high harmonic production. Suppression of the 23rd harmonic (by two orders of magnitude) is observed when a counter-propagating interfering pulse of light is introduced. A sequence of counter-propagating pulses can be used to shut down harmonic production in out-of-phase zones of the generating volume to achieve quasi phase matching. Harmonic emission …

On-Chip Actuation Of An In-Plane Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Michael S. Baker, Larry L. Howell Dec 2002

On-Chip Actuation Of An In-Plane Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Michael S. Baker, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

A compliant bistable micromechanism has been developed which can be switched in either direction using on-chip thermal actuation. The energy storage and bistable behavior of the mechanism is achieved through the elastic deflection of compliant segments. The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model was used for the compliant mechanism design, and for analysis of the large deflection flexible segments. To achieve on-chip actuation, the mechanism design was optimized to allow it to be switched using linear motion thermal actuators. The modeling theory and analysis are presented for three design iterations, with two iterations fabricated in the MUMP's process and the third in the SUMMiT …

An Assessment Of Seawinds On Quikscat Wind Retrieval, David Draper, David G. Long Dec 2002

An Assessment Of Seawinds On Quikscat Wind Retrieval, David Draper, David G. Long

Faculty Publications

The scatterometer ocean wind retrieval process produces several possible solutions or ambiguities at each point, requiring a separate ambiguity selection step to infer a unique wind vector field. An ambiguity selection error occurs when the selected wind vector is not the closest ambiguity to the true wind. The current ambiguity selection routine for SeaWinds is ad hoc, but performs well under most circumstances. Factors such as instrument noise and rain can also cause the estimated wind flow to deviate from the true wind. A quality assurance (QA) analysis is performed to assess the ambiguity selection effectiveness and noise level of …

Biaxial Strain-Modified Valence And Conduction Band Offsets Of Zinc-Blende Gan, Gap, Gaas, Inn, Inp, And Inas, And Optical Bowing Of Strained Epitaxial Ingan Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, P. R. C. Kent, Alex Zunger Dec 2002

Biaxial Strain-Modified Valence And Conduction Band Offsets Of Zinc-Blende Gan, Gap, Gaas, Inn, Inp, And Inas, And Optical Bowing Of Strained Epitaxial Ingan Alloys, Gus L. W. Hart, P. R. C. Kent, Alex Zunger

Faculty Publications

Using density-functional calculations, we obtain the (001) biaxial strain dependence of the valence and conduction band energies of GaN, GaP, GaAs, InN, InP, and InAs. The results are fit to a convenient-to-use polynomial and the fits provided in tabular form. Using the calculated biaxial deformation potentials in large supercell empirical psuedopotential calculations, we demonstrate that epitaxial strain reduces the InGaN alloy bowing coefficient compared to relaxed bulk alloys.

Bergmann's Rule In Ectotherms: A Test Using Freshwater Fishes, Mark C. Belk, Derek D. Houston Dec 2002

Bergmann's Rule In Ectotherms: A Test Using Freshwater Fishes, Mark C. Belk, Derek D. Houston

Faculty Publications

Understanding patterns of variation in body size within and among species is a central question in evolutionary ecology (Schlichting and Pigliucci 1998). The most well known pattern of variation in body size is Bergmann's rule (Bergmann 1847; Mayr 1956). The intraspecific version of Bergmann's rule holds that within endothermic species, body size increases with increasing latitude (or decreasing temperature; Blackburn et al. 1999; Ashton et al. 2000). In general, mammals conform to this rule (Ashton et al. 2000).

Coordinated Target Assignment And Intercept For Unmanned Air Vehicles, Erik P. Anderson, Randal W. Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Timothy W. Mclain Dec 2002

Coordinated Target Assignment And Intercept For Unmanned Air Vehicles, Erik P. Anderson, Randal W. Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an end-to-end solution to the cooperative control problem represented by the scenario where unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are assigned to transition through known target locations in the presence of dynamic threats. The problem is decomposed into the subproblems of: 1) cooperative target assignment; 2) coordinated UAV intercept; 3) path planning; 4) feasible trajectory generation; and 5) asymptotic trajectory following. The design technique is based on a hierarchical approach to coordinated control. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Brain Potentials Elicited By Prose-Embedded Linguistic Anomalies, Mark D. Allen, Kayo Inoue, Judith Mclaughlin, Lee Osterhout Dec 2002

Brain Potentials Elicited By Prose-Embedded Linguistic Anomalies, Mark D. Allen, Kayo Inoue, Judith Mclaughlin, Lee Osterhout

Faculty Publications

Linguistic theories distinguish between syntax (sentence form) and semantics (sentence meaning). Correspondingly, recent studies have shown that syntactic and semantic anomalies elicit distinct changes in the event-related brain potential (ERP). However, these results have been obtained with highly artificial methodologies and have not yet been generalized to more natural reading conditions. Here, we recorded ERPs while subjects read a naturalistic prose passage. The subjects either read for comprehension with no other task being assigned or read for comprehension and made acceptability judgments after each sentence. Consistent with prior work and regardless of the subjects’ assigned task, syntactic anomalies elicited a …

Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson Dec 2002

Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson

Faculty Publications

In past research, relational and physical forms of peer victimization have been identified that have been shown to be significantly associated with social–psychological maladjustment. These forms of victimization, although studied primarily within the group peer context, also occur within dyadic relationships such as friendships. Gender differences in friend victimization and the association between friend victimization and children's social–psychological adjustment were examined. Results showed that boys were more physically victimized by their friends than were girls. Girls were more relationally than physically victimized by their friends. Friend victimization was related to adjustment difficulties for both boys and girls; however, friend physical …

Mammals Of The Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument: A Literature And Museum Survey, Jerran T. Flinders, Duke S. Rogers, Jackee L. Webber-Alston, Harry A. Barber Nov 2002

Mammals Of The Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument: A Literature And Museum Survey, Jerran T. Flinders, Duke S. Rogers, Jackee L. Webber-Alston, Harry A. Barber

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. We propose that a core area, surrounded by a buffer matrix, be used in GSENM and surrounding public lands to preserve …

Stoneflies (Plecoptera) Of Southern Utah With An Updated Checklist Of Utah Species, Ronald G. Call, Richard W. Baumann Nov 2002

Stoneflies (Plecoptera) Of Southern Utah With An Updated Checklist Of Utah Species, Ronald G. Call, Richard W. Baumann

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Southern Utah comprises 4 major physiographic divisions: the Great Basin, Colorado Plateau, Central Rocky Mountains, and Southern Rocky Mountains, which have been partitioned into faunal regions. We discuss the uniqueness of southern Utah and the amount of land set aside for recreation and preservation, and we encourage the study and preservation of its water resources. The stonefly (Plecoptera) fauna of 13 counties in southern Utah was surveyed. We found 58 species representing 34 genera and 8 families. Three new state records for Utah and many new county records for southern Utah are presented, along with a discussion of distribution patterns …

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars, B. J. Taylor Nov 2002

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars, B. J. Taylor

Faculty Publications

This paper is one of a pair in which temperatures and metallicity catalogs for class IV-V stars are considered. The temperature catalog described here is derived from a calibration based on stellar angular diameters. If published calibrations of this kind are compared by using color-index transformations, temperature-dependent differences among the calibrations are commonly found. However, such differences are minimized if attention is restricted to calibrations based on Johnson V-K. A calibration of this sort from Di Benedetto (1998) is therefore tested and adopted. That calibration is then applied to spectroscopic and photometric data, with the latter predominating. Cousins R-I photometry …

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars - Ii. The Epoch 2001 [Fe/H] Catalog, B. J. Taylor Nov 2002

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars - Ii. The Epoch 2001 [Fe/H] Catalog, B. J. Taylor

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the derivation of an updated statistical catalog of metallicities. The stars for which those metallicities apply are of spectral types F, G, and K, and are on or near the main sequence. The input data for the catalog are values of [Fe/H] published before 2002 February and derived from lines of weak and moderate strength. The analyses used to derive the data have been based on one-dimensional LTE model atmospheres. Initial adjustments which are applied to the data include corrections to a uniform temperature scale which is given in a companion paper (see Taylor 2003). After correction, …

Development And Design Of Constant-Force Mechanisms, Brent Lewis Weight Nov 2002

Development And Design Of Constant-Force Mechanisms, Brent Lewis Weight

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis adds to the knowledge base of constant-force mechanisms (CFMs). It begins by reviewing past work done in the area of CFMs and then develops new nondimensionalized parameters that are used to simplify the calculations required to design a CFM. Comparison techniques are then developed that utilize these non-dimensionalized parameters to compare mechanisms based on stiffnesses, percent constant-force, actual lengths, normal displacements, and feasible design orientations. These comparison techniques are then combined with optimization to define new mechanisms with improved performance and range of capabilities. This thesis also outlines a design process, methods to identify mechanisms that are suitable …

Special Feature: The Swiss In Eighteenth-Century South Carolina: Novelist Tracks Early Settlers, Sue Duffy, Perry Baker Nov 2002

Special Feature: The Swiss In Eighteenth-Century South Carolina: Novelist Tracks Early Settlers, Sue Duffy, Perry Baker

Swiss American Historical Society Review

While writing three novels from her comfortable brick home in Lexington, Carol Williams lived many lives in the 18th-century backcountry of South Carolina. Writers do that sort of thing. To tell the story of Swiss immigrants in the lands along the Saluda and Congaree rivers, the author became the hunter, the farmer and the soldier desperate to survive in a severe and glorious wilderness.

Modeling The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo Nov 2002

Modeling The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo

Faculty Publications

To support IP multicast, domains must assign a unique multicast address to each application from a limited, globally-shared address space. We examine the performance of several classes of address allocation algorithms withln the context of the MASC architecture. This study is the first of its kind to model the generalized multicast address allocation problem and consider non-contiguous allocation algorithms. We find that prefix-based allocation outperforms our non-contiguous algorithm, despite the apparent advantages of non-contiguous allocation. We also verify the benefits of using worst-fit for new allocations.

Special Feature: The Swiss In Eighteenth-Century South Carolina: Response To Kristina Marcy's "Review Essay", Carol Williams Nov 2002

Special Feature: The Swiss In Eighteenth-Century South Carolina: Response To Kristina Marcy's "Review Essay", Carol Williams

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Like most white South Carolinians of my generation, I have various strands of European ancestry: Scots-Irish, English, German, Swiss, and since my name is "Williams," probably Welsh by way of England, then Ulster. However, it was the Swiss strand that I was most conscious of when growing up because I knew a little more about it. A grandmother often talked to us children about "our people," about "dear old Grandfather," whose own grandfather had come from Switzerland in the mid-eighteenth century: George Sightler (Seitler, Siteler, Sitler); and we had a written history of his family in South Carolina.
