Systematic Review Of Digital Activity Schedule Use In Individuals With Autism And Intellectual Disability, Adelaide Wahlquist Hammond
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this systematic review of using digital activity schedules as an intervention in individuals with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities is to determine to what extent the current research shows it to be an effective intervention. For articles to be included in this review, they had to use a digitally presented activity schedule, the activity schedule could not be a task analysis of a single activity or a group visual schedule, and the intervention must have been carried out with individuals with autism or intellectual disabilities. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria totaled 17 studies with a total …
A Comparative Illustration Of Trip- And Activity-Based Modeling Techniques, Steven Hayden Atchley
A Comparative Illustration Of Trip- And Activity-Based Modeling Techniques, Steven Hayden Atchley
Theses and Dissertations
Activity-based travel demand models are generally considered superior to their trip-based counterparts, as activity-based models (ABMs) explicitly model individuals in contrast to the aggregate nature of trip-based models. There have been a number of comparisons between trip- and activity-based models, but these comparisons focus almost exclusively on the technical ability of the two model types, while not considering the practical benefits an ABM may or may not have to a transportation agency. This research performs a more holistic comparison between trip- and activity-based models, focused specifically on the practical differences between model types, both in terms of usability and capability …
Raising Hope: A Preliminary Investigation Of Hope-Strengthening Parenting, Anna Sellers Calley
Raising Hope: A Preliminary Investigation Of Hope-Strengthening Parenting, Anna Sellers Calley
Theses and Dissertations
Hope Theory defines hope as a cognitive-motivational process of seeking and obtaining goals through agency thinking and pathway building, with substantive connection to many desirable outcomes. While hope is theorized to begin developing early in life, this assumption has never been empirically investigated. This is due to limitations in established hope measurement. There is an additional gap in the research surrounding the role of parents in the development of hope. In this study, I address each of these gaps by utilizing a novel measure of hope in early childhood and running a multiple linear regression model to investigate potential connections …

Connecting Hiv-1 Viral Protein R Polymorphisms To Changes In Inflammatory Signals And Efficacy Testing Of Essential Oils As Disinfectants Against Sars-Cov-2, J. Brandon Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) is the causative agent for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Different strains of HIV-1 have been linked to a long term non-progressor (LTNP) or rapid progressor (RP) form of disease depending on rate of AIDS progression. Viral protein R (Vpr) is a viral protein that has been linked to varying rates of AIDS progression depending on the sequence. In this work, the effects of two polymorphisms, a LTNP and a RP, on different cells are studied. The LTNP virus was linked to lower release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF and IL-6, and an increase in apoptotic …
Real-Time Dynamically Feasible B-Spline Trajectory Generation For Unmanned Aircraft, David Lavae Christensen
Real-Time Dynamically Feasible B-Spline Trajectory Generation For Unmanned Aircraft, David Lavae Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
Onboard aircraft systems must frequently plan dynamically feasible paths or trajectories to safely and quickly reach their goal position. Optimized B-splines are promising because they can guarantee kinematic feasibility in a computationally efficient manner and can be applied to a variety of vehicle models. However, current B-spline solutions do not adequately constrain trajectories to the physical limitation of the vehicles they are planning for, or are often too conservative. Most are also limited to path smoothing or require pre-optimized timing parameters. This thesis develops a real-time B-spline optimization-based trajectory generator capable of minimizing time while respecting the velocity, acceleration, and …
Investigating Cloth Sculpting For Simulation Control In Virtual Reality, Matthew S. Bishop
Investigating Cloth Sculpting For Simulation Control In Virtual Reality, Matthew S. Bishop
Theses and Dissertations
Artists require control and predictability over physically based simulations to create their required animation. This control can lead to reduced iteration time to get the desired simulation results. Controlling cloth simulations can require manual effort to create goal keyframes for control algorithms to match. Current techniques and research utilize a keyboard and mouse to create these goal keyframes. Other research has looked at using a virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display with controllers to improve the experience of completing similar animation tasks. However, we are not aware of any research that attempts to use VR as a tool to assist artists …
Development And Application Of A Particle-Based Reactor Network Model For Entrained Flow Gasifier Design, Eric Christian Monson
Development And Application Of A Particle-Based Reactor Network Model For Entrained Flow Gasifier Design, Eric Christian Monson
Theses and Dissertations
A novel particle-based reactor network model (PRNM) was developed to predict the performance of a dry-feed, pressurized, single-stage, slagging entrained flow gasifier under various operational parameters. This model provides improved detail of particle conversion as a function of gasifier location, particle size, and fuel type not available in standard reactor network models. The model inputs were designed to allow changes in geometry, firing rate, stoichiometric ratio, fuel type, and inlet gas composition. Key performance metrics included the gas and refractory temperature profiles, axial gas compositions, and particle burnout. PRNM used a network of idealized reactors to specify the flow field …

Laying Framework For A Novel In Vitro Eukaryotic System To Measure Rate Of Transcription Elongation, John Lucas Ramirez
Laying Framework For A Novel In Vitro Eukaryotic System To Measure Rate Of Transcription Elongation, John Lucas Ramirez
Theses and Dissertations
Within each cell, genetic material is stored in the form of DNA. This DNA is compacted around proteins to form higher order structures called chromatin. The basic unit of chromatin is a histone protein octamer bound with DNA called a nucleosome. A nucleosome consists of eight core proteins, four pairs of histone proteins H2A, H2B, H3, and H4, wrapped by DNA. The DNA wraps around the histone protein roughly 1.7 times, helping facilitate the compaction of DNA within the nucleus of the cell. The location of nucleosomes makes genetic material that encodes various elements, such as promoters or enhancers, accessible …

Cellular Sorting Of The Dictyostelium Discoideum Slug, Erin Flowerday
Cellular Sorting Of The Dictyostelium Discoideum Slug, Erin Flowerday
Theses and Dissertations
Dictyostelium discoideum (Dd) cells are amoeba cells that feed on soil or plant leaf matter bacteria. They divide freely in the presence of food. When starved, cell division is ended, and cells transition from unicellular to multicellular organisms initiated by a chemoattractant, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). This study intricately examines cellular sorting within the Dd slug, focusing on individual cell dynamics. Represented as oriented ellipsoids, these cells maintain constant volume through a viscoelastic structure. Applying force to specific semi-axes reveals predictable deformations, highlighting the relationship between force and deformation rate. Manipulating damping coefficients and spring constants uncovers insights into cell …

Design And Validation Of Sensing Knee Sleeve Rehabilitation Device Utilizing Large Deflection Strain Gauges, Kurt Christian Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are increasingly common in the US and globally. However, rehabilitation outcomes may be negatively affected by limited access to physical therapy and patients' tendency to not fully adhere to recommended exercises between therapy sessions. This study aims to develop a remote system to aid rehabilitation, building upon recent sensor development at Brigham Young University, providing physical therapy-like biofeedback during unsupervised at-home exercises. The system developed by this research consists of three primary components: (1) a sensor array for measuring leg/knee biomechanics, (2) a machine learning algorithm to predict knee flexion angle from the sensor data, …
Subspace Decomposition Of Linear Secrecy Codes, David Robert Joseph Hunn
Subspace Decomposition Of Linear Secrecy Codes, David Robert Joseph Hunn
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce a new method for the study of linear codes, termed subspace decomposition, which provides new insights into code structure and performance. Briefly, subspace decomposition comprises the evaluation of complex properties of a linear code by evaluating simple properties of its constituent subspaces. We find that this technique has application to a number of problems in coding theory. When applied to the problem of evaluating the performance of secrecy codes, subspace decomposition provides an efficient method for computing the equivocation of coset codes over the binary erasure wiretap channel. It is also especially efficient in computing the chi squared …

Partisanship, Security, And Global Status: Anatomy Of Taiwan’S March 19 Shooting Conspiracy Theories, William Martindale
Partisanship, Security, And Global Status: Anatomy Of Taiwan’S March 19 Shooting Conspiracy Theories, William Martindale
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Previous research has shown how belief in particular conspiracy theories is subject to their salience to believers. Using the example of Taiwan’s March 19 shooting conspiracy theories, I show in this paper that salience is created by appealing to existing collective memory. Additionally, I show that conspiracy theory spreaders help to reinforce the elements of collective memory that make their conspiracy theories salient. Using evidence from primary sources and a representative survey sample, I demonstrate the relevance of three contextual elements in belief in conspiracy theories about the March 19 shooting. These can be summarized as Partisanship, Security, and Global …
Optimization Of Mass Spectrometry-Based Methods For Low-Input And Spatial Proteomics, Andikan Jones Nwosu
Optimization Of Mass Spectrometry-Based Methods For Low-Input And Spatial Proteomics, Andikan Jones Nwosu
Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotic cells are highly heterogeneous. These cells are arranged into different compartments, carrying out separate functions and facilitating biological processes. Proteins are the effector biomolecules targeted to subcellular locations that help fulfill specific tasks in living organisms. Spatial proteomics can help unravel molecularly how protein abundance and localization are altered in cells, which is not feasible in traditional bulk-scale proteomics. To achieve this, our lab has developed a miniaturized sample processing platform called nanoPOTS, reduced separation columns' inner diameter to increase ionization efficiency and concentrate analytes for mass spectrometers and optimized data acquisition modes for increasing proteome coverage in spatial …

Design Considerations For Self-Deploying Origami-Inspired Space Arrays, Kathryn Faith Varela
Design Considerations For Self-Deploying Origami-Inspired Space Arrays, Kathryn Faith Varela
Theses and Dissertations
Origami engineering involves many steps, including selecting a pattern, accommodating for thickness, and choosing stabilization, damping, and deployment methods, the last of which is particularly important if the array is intended to self-deploy. Through metrics and case studies, this research strives to aid designers in creating origami-inspired deployable arrays. The approaches vary as each chapter focuses on a different aspect of origami engineering. By introducing a thickness accommodation technique and reducing complications with rigid-foldability (when applicable), this work shows how the geometrical structure can be modified to help the array stow and deploy. By providing quantitative and qualitative metrics for …
Reconfigurable Over-The-Air Chamber: Measuring Radio Frequency Device Performance, Benjamin T. Arnold
Reconfigurable Over-The-Air Chamber: Measuring Radio Frequency Device Performance, Benjamin T. Arnold
Theses and Dissertations
Over-the-air (OTA) testing is particularly useful in determining the performance of multi-antenna communication devices in real-world environments. Traditional OTA testing technologies include the reverberation chamber (RC) and the multi-probe anechoic chamber. More recently, the reconfigurable OTA chamber (ROTAC), which is a RC that has probes lining its chamber walls, has been proposed. These probes are either driven with a source, possibly combined with a channel emulator, or are terminated with a tunable impedance. Controlling the excitations and terminations on the probes can alter the fields within the chamber and thereby synthesize an antenna response at the device under test (DUT). …

A Wee Bit Of Cleanup: Updating Scottish Locality Pages On The Familysearch Research Wiki, Garrett Mast
Undergraduate Honors Theses
While the FamilySearch Research Wiki provides a valuable resource for genealogical references for countries across the globe, its potential is bottlenecked by having a small pool of editors compared to sites like Wikipedia. The webpages for each Scottish parish have fallen by the wayside, with most not receiving any material update in a decade. This project reflection highlights the choices made and processes taken in order to revitalize the Scottish locality pages of the Research Wiki following the verification of civil, ecclesiastical, and probate jurisdictions for each parish in Scotland. This included making an interactive jurisdiction map in ArcGIS …
Religious Liberty: Natural Rights Or The Politics Of Conscience, Madeline Nielsen
Religious Liberty: Natural Rights Or The Politics Of Conscience, Madeline Nielsen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Religion Clause jurisprudence in the United States has long been a subject of debate. Vincent Phillip Muñoz and Steven D. Smith, two prominent scholars in the field, offer distinct perspectives on the interpretation and application of the Religion Clauses. Muñoz advocates for a natural rights construction, grounding religious liberty in the Founders' understanding of inalienable rights. In contrast, Smith analyzes the principle of religious liberty through reflecting upon how the Founders’, particularly James Madison, were influenced by the historical, philosophical, and theological development of the principle. This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of their viewpoints, focusing on their interpretations of …

Eugenics And Feminism: The Reflections Of Two Ideologies In The Reproductive Policies Of The Nazi Regime, The Reunification Period, And Present-Day Germany, Sydney Reil
Undergraduate Honors Theses
German abortion law is restrictive for a Western European nation of strong economic standing and with relatively liberal social policy. Additionally, Germany is one of few Western European nations without an embryopathy indication, which allows for exceptional abortions in cases of fetal defects. The law (as it stands in 2024), has been immeasurably shaped by two ideologies, eugenics and feminism, and by modern Germany’s consideration of both the ideologies themselves, and of how they influenced the reproductive policies of the twentieth century. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the influences of eugenics and feminism on German reproductive law …
Striking At The Root: A Categorization Of Dns Clients, Tyler Dean
Striking At The Root: A Categorization Of Dns Clients, Tyler Dean
Theses and Dissertations
The Domain Name System (DNS) root servers have provided a useful look into the DNS and internet ecosystems for decades. We present a categorization of clients querying DNS root servers. Using two clustering algorithms on DNS traffic sampled in 2020, we can predict the structure and volume of queries originating from different types of clients. Previous research has used unsupervised techniques to better understand DNS traffic patterns, but none have, to our knowledge, considered clients beyond those driven by queries from end users. By performing clustering on IP addresses rather than on individual queries, we are able to examine the …

Theses and Dissertations
This study examines current trends of university counseling center (UCC) utilization among Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students and student-military Veterans, compared to their nonmilitary-minded peers at a large, private, western university. Given likely differences in the lived experiences between these three populations, research is needed to provide insight on the treatment needs of military-minded students. We examine counseling center data for ROTC (n = 88), Veteran (n = 93), and nonmilitary-minded (n = 16,268) students who presented for counseling services from 2014-2021. A matched sample was obtained from the dataset for some of the analyses. The three groups are …
An Overview Of Contributing Frameworks To Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Sarai Clemente Soli
An Overview Of Contributing Frameworks To Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Sarai Clemente Soli
Theses and Dissertations
Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) is a framework designed to help traditionally marginalized students. Other frameworks have previously tried to draw on culture to help students in similar ways. However, Paris (2012b) claimed that the word sustaining enclosed a meaning of maintaining and enhancing these students' language and cultural practices that no other frameworks did until that point. There is some confusion for educators and others about CSP since it is a newer framework and that there are many of these cultural frameworks analyzing similar concepts. Therefore, the purpose of this literature review was to examine these previous main frameworks that …

Addressing mental health concerns and promoting well-being is imperative for university students to function optimally and to succeed academically. The demand for mental health care is exceeding the capacity of traditional counseling center resources at universities, suggesting the need for innovative interventions that can serve a broader scope of students. There is emerging evidence suggesting that mental health can be addressed, and well-being improved through psychoeducation and applied skills taught in classroom settings. Objectives: To examine a Mental Health and Well-Being course at a large, private religious university and its relationship to students’ well-being. This will be measured by assessing …
High School Sport Participation: Effects On Students' Grit And Resilience, Rory Kekoa-Israel Waldman
High School Sport Participation: Effects On Students' Grit And Resilience, Rory Kekoa-Israel Waldman
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescence is a time of transition, growth, and identity exploration. Often this great time for growth is accompanied with an increase in stressors that can be detrimental to success and health, without the necessary coping mechanisms. It is a period of life where resilience and grit are extremely important. A post-traumatic growth definition for resilience allows for the possibility of a steeling effect, in which the resilience of an adolescent can grow and develop. Sport provides an ideal environment for the development of both grit and resilience by providing a safe environment for adversity to occur without detrimental consequences. In …
Documentation Of Norm Negotiation In A Secondary Mathematics Classroom, Michelle R. Bagley
Documentation Of Norm Negotiation In A Secondary Mathematics Classroom, Michelle R. Bagley
Theses and Dissertations
While previous mathematics education research has shown that norms can change in mathematics classrooms, little research has closely documented the struggles, concessions, and compromises involved in the negotiation process. Negotiating norms is a complex process entailing deliberate teacher moves intended to promote norms, often met with misunderstandings or resistance from students. This thesis documented the negotiation process that occurred when a teacher attempted to require conceptual explanations from students who had not previously been accustomed to doing so. I recorded six days of instruction in a 9th grade algebra unit, transcribed the class discussions, and inferred norms "at play" for …
