Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov Dec 2002

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov

Theses and Dissertations

Laser high-order harmonic generation in the presence of relatively weak interfering light is investigated. The interfering pulses intersect the primary harmonic-generating laser pulse at the laser focus. The interfering light creates a standing intensity and phase modulation on the field, which disrupts microscopic phase matching and shuts down local high harmonic production. Suppression of the 23rd harmonic (by two orders of magnitude) is observed when a counter-propagating interfering pulse of light is introduced. A sequence of counter-propagating pulses can be used to shut down harmonic production in out-of-phase zones of the generating volume to achieve quasi phase matching. Harmonic emission …

Development And Design Of Constant-Force Mechanisms, Brent Lewis Weight Nov 2002

Development And Design Of Constant-Force Mechanisms, Brent Lewis Weight

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis adds to the knowledge base of constant-force mechanisms (CFMs). It begins by reviewing past work done in the area of CFMs and then develops new nondimensionalized parameters that are used to simplify the calculations required to design a CFM. Comparison techniques are then developed that utilize these non-dimensionalized parameters to compare mechanisms based on stiffnesses, percent constant-force, actual lengths, normal displacements, and feasible design orientations. These comparison techniques are then combined with optimization to define new mechanisms with improved performance and range of capabilities. This thesis also outlines a design process, methods to identify mechanisms that are suitable …

A History Of The Latter-Day Saints In The Columbia Basin Of Central Washington 1850-1972, Rick B. Jorgensen Nov 2002

A History Of The Latter-Day Saints In The Columbia Basin Of Central Washington 1850-1972, Rick B. Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

The Columbia Basin of Central Washington has a relatively recent Latter-day Saint history among the regions of the western states. Most of the sparsely populated rural areas in the west that have large concentrations of Latter-day Saints were originally established as "Mormon" settlements. The basin referred to lies between the Snake and Columbia Rivers and now has thousands of Latter-day Saints who have chosen to inhabit the historically barren land and call it their home. A brief visit or casual observance of the area leads many to question what were the major factors and characteristics leading to the twentieth century …

Theses and Dissertations

This is a state-level analysis of the impact of state building on woman suffrage legislation in the United States. This study examines all states in which state legislatures were conferred the power to submit a constitutional amendment to the electorate for approval. I use a sequential random-effects logistic regression model to estimate the effects of state building on legislative outcome. Legislative outcome is measured in three stages: whether or not a bill is introduced in either the House or the Senate during a legislative session, whether or not a bill is voted on in either the House or the Senate …

The Relationship Of Corpus Callosum And Cingulate Gyrus Surface Areas With Intelligence Scores In Persons With Early Hydrocephalus, Heather Gerschler Aug 2002

The Relationship Of Corpus Callosum And Cingulate Gyrus Surface Areas With Intelligence Scores In Persons With Early Hydrocephalus, Heather Gerschler

Theses and Dissertations

This study served as a pilot study of cingulate gyrus surface areas and their relation to intelligence in individuals with hydrocephalus. Surface areas of the corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus regions were compared between individuals with early hydrocephalus (n = 9) and controls (n = 7). Subsequently, the surface areas were correlated with full-scale intelligence scores and the verbal and nonverbal discrepancy scores. Corpus collosum surface areas were significantly smaller in participants with hydrocephalus. These areas also robustly correlated with full-scale intelligence scores. Although the cingulate gyrus did not differ significantly between the groups, the cingulate gyrus regions were increasingly …

Modification Of All-Hexadedral Finite Element Meshes By Dual Sheet Insertion And Extraction, Michael J. Borden Aug 2002

Modification Of All-Hexadedral Finite Element Meshes By Dual Sheet Insertion And Extraction, Michael J. Borden

Theses and Dissertations

The development of algorithms that effectively modify all-hexahedral finite element mesh is currently an active area of research. Mesh modification can be used to improve mesh quality reduce the time required to mesh a model, and improve the finite element analysis results. However, general modification of all-hexahedral meshes has proven difficult because of the global effects of local modifications. This thesis explains the global constraints on modifying all-hexahedral meshes and then presents three mesh modification techniques that make it possible to do local modifications while accounting for the global effects. These techniques are sheet insertion, sheet extraction, and mesh cutting. …

A Formal Method To Analyze Framework-Based Software, Trent N. Larson Aug 2002

A Formal Method To Analyze Framework-Based Software, Trent N. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Software systems are frequently designed using abstractions that make software verification tractable. Specifically, by choosing meaningful, formal abstractions for interfaces and then designing according to those interfaces, one can verify entire systems according to behavioral predicates. While impractical for systems in general, framework-based software architectures are a type of system for which formal analysis can be beneficial and practical over the life of the system. We present a method to formally analyze behavioral properties of framework-based software with higher-order logic and then demonstrate its utility for a significant, modern system.

Corporeal Resurrection: The Pure Doctrine Restored Through The Prophet Joseph Smith, J. Peter Hansen Jun 2002

Corporeal Resurrection: The Pure Doctrine Restored Through The Prophet Joseph Smith, J. Peter Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

During Jesus' earthly ministry He taught the pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection to His disciples. Some of them became special witnesses to the literal bodily resurrection of Jesus after His death. Over time, men's philosophies perverted the true doctrine of the resurrection. Those teachings became the orthodoxy of the early Christian church and were handed down to modern Christianity. The pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection was weakened, and in some sects, was lost.

The Lord restored the gospel through Joseph Smith. Part of the Restoration qualified him as a special witness of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through him pure …

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie May 2002

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie

Theses and Dissertations

In engineering, materials are often assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic; in actuality, material properties do change with sample direction and location. This variation is due to the anisotropy of the individual grains and their spatial distribution in the material. Currently there is a lack of communication between the design engineer, material scientist, and processor for solving multi-objective/constrained designs. If communication existed between these groups then materials could be designed for applications, instead of the reverse. Microstructure sensitive design introduces a common language, a spectral representation, where both design properties and microstructures are expressed.

Using Hill bounds, effective elastic properties …

Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover Apr 2002

Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover

Theses and Dissertations

The effective generation high quality quadrilateral surface meshes is an area of important research and development for the finite element community. Quadrilateral elements generally lead to more efficient and accurate finite results. In addition, some all hexahedral volume meshing algorithms are based on an initial quadrilateral mesh surface mesh that has specific connectivity requirements. This thesis presents a new and unique procedure named "Surfaced Splicing". Surface Splicing allows for the generation of all quadrilateral surface meshes as well as the ability to edit these meshes via the dual. The dual contains the same data as the mesh but, unlike the …

Bertha Von Suttner's "Die Waffen Nieder": A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten W. Vuissa

Theses and Dissertations

Bertha von Suttner lived in fin-de siècle Vienna. She wrote her romantic novel Die Waffen nieder in 1889 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 for the novel’s influence on the German peace movement. This thesis looks at the effect Suttner’s gender had on the novel and its reception. As a woman writing about peace, Suttner was aware of the societal limitations placed upon her treatment of a political subject. Suttner carefully and consciously chose the novel’s genre. Her synthesis of content and form epitomizes her pacifist and feminist cause. The protagonist’s rhetorical language and the novel’s genre compliment …

"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai Mar 2002

"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the complexities of constructing a German identity as a black German. The recent emergence of Germany's black minority group was generally perceived as an opportunity to reevaluate Germanness as it has been understood in the past. However, this thesis shows that a reevaluation of Germanness lacks full support because traditional German ideals of racial superiority continue to exist in the consciousness of all Germans - black and white. This suggests that theories of racial superiority continue to determine belonging and identity construction in Germany. Above all, the presence of Western racial ideology in black German identity construction …

A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd Mar 2002

A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

Coalescent theory is a method often used by population geneticists in order to make inferences about evolutionary parameters. The coalescent is a stochastic model that approximates ancestral relationships among genes. An understanding of the coalescent pattern of a sample of sequences, along with some knowledge of the mutations that have occurred, provides information about the evolutionary forces that have acted on the population. Processes such as migration, recombination, variable population size, or natural selection are the forces that affect the genealogies and lead to genetic variability in a sample. Coalescent theory provides a statistical description of the variability in the …
