The Old And The Restless: The Egyptians And The Scythians In Herodotus' Histories, Robert J. Hagan
The Old And The Restless: The Egyptians And The Scythians In Herodotus' Histories, Robert J. Hagan
Senior Projects Spring 2011
The first part of this project focuses on the differences and similarities between the Egyptians and Scythians that occur in Herodotus' work. The second part will examine how this contrast helps the reader understand the many other cultures discussed in the book, focusing on the Persians in particular, and what these similarities and differences mean to Herodotus in terms of the Histories as a whole.
Sustaining Growth: A Projection Of China’S Rebalancing Efforts Towards Domestic Consumption, Yugai Zhu
Sustaining Growth: A Projection Of China’S Rebalancing Efforts Towards Domestic Consumption, Yugai Zhu
Senior Projects Spring 2011
According to the macroeconomic identity, combined private sector and public sector balance should match current account balance in any economy. This senior project applies the macroeconomic identity to Chinese data, and analyzes systematically China’s economic structure. The analysis finds that China is not as reliant on trade as people normally think despite that the private sector is running a large surplus. Furthermore, it also shows that the private sector can be induced to spend more, and the public sector has much potential to increase deficit spending. Based on these results, I recommend a combination of 10% to 20% exchange rate …

The Family Dialogue: Language Acculturation And Its Impact On Perceived Family Conflict Among Asian Americans, Qi Xu
Senior Projects Spring 2011
The present study examines the acculturation gap and the acculturation dimension of language between 1st - 2nd generation Asian Americans (Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian) adolescents and their first generation immigrant parents and its predicted relationship to the likelihood of perceived family conflict. Survey data was collected from 34 Asian American college students using the Suinn-Lew Asian Self Identity Acculturation Scale (SL-ASIA) and the Asian American Family Conflicts Scale (AAFCS). It was predicted that the larger the gap between the levels of acculturation and language acculturation of the parent and child, the greater the likelihood of experienced family conflict. …

Classifying Derived Voltage Graphs, Madeline Schatzberg
Classifying Derived Voltage Graphs, Madeline Schatzberg
Senior Projects Spring 2011
Gross and Tucker’s voltage graph construction assigns group elements as weights to the edges of an oriented graph. This construction provides a blueprint for inducing graph covers. Thomas Zaslavsky studies the criteria for balance in voltage graphs. This project primarily examines the relationship between the group structure of the set of all possible assignments of a group to a graph, including the balanced subgroup, and the isomorphism classes of covering graphs. We examine connectedness, planarity, and chromatic number in the derived graph. Lastly we explain the future research possibilities involving the fundamental group.
Muscle: A Simulation Toolkit Modeling Low Energy Muon Beam Transport In Crystals, Nazmus Saquib
Muscle: A Simulation Toolkit Modeling Low Energy Muon Beam Transport In Crystals, Nazmus Saquib
Senior Projects Spring 2011
The project involves the development of MUSCLE (MUonS Cascade at Low Energy), a collection of programs written in C++ and Mathematica to numerically simulate the passage of low energy muon beams through crystals. Monte Carlo methods employing binary collision approximation calculations and appropriate molecular dynamics algorithms are implemented to construct the trajectories and determine the spatial distribution of stopped muons in single crystals. Channeling of muon particles along certain crystal planes are also found. Binary collision approximation and molecular dynamics algorithms are compared and the possible effect of channeling is discussed.

Senior Projects Fall 2011
I began senior project with the intention of creating an entirely sculptural body of work. This ambition changed with my summer internship at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York. It was here within the exquisite architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s museum that I decided to focus on two-dimensional work. This change came about because I was inspired by the Lee Ufan retrospective: Marking Infinity, on view at the time. I was specifically intrigued by Mr. Lee’s use of emptiness. The vast empty spaces within his paintings and prints provided the viewer with a moment of meditation. Curator Alexandra …
A Violent Reconciliation: Exploring The Rule Of Law, Violence, And States Of Exception Through John Ford’S The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance And Christopher Nolan’S The Dark Knight, Nathan Donarum
Senior Projects Fall 2011
Is it possible for extralegal action, or violence, to be reconciled with the rule of law? This is a question that intrudes upon the idea that, as Aristotle stated, “Law should govern.” In essence, the rule of law is supposed to exist to prevent, or to transition from, the arbitrary use of power and deployment of force. If the rule of law exists, then there need not be arbitrary action. But if the transition to, or re-instating of, an ordered state requires a lawless act, or acts, inherently, then no stark dichotomy between the rule of law and violence can …
Elliptic Curves: Minimally Spanning Prime Fields And Supersingularity, Travis Mcgrath
Elliptic Curves: Minimally Spanning Prime Fields And Supersingularity, Travis Mcgrath
Senior Projects Spring 2011
Elliptic curves are cubic curves that have been studied throughout history. From Diophantus of Alexandria to modern-day cryptography, Elliptic Curves have been a central focus of mathematics. This project explores certain geometric properties of elliptic curves defined over finite fields.
Fix a finite field. This project starts by demonstrating that given enough elliptic curves, their union will contain every point in the affine plane. We then find the fewest curves possible such that their union still contains all these points. Using some of the tools discussed in solving this problem, we then explore what can be said about the number …
Can We Relate?, I Never Got The Message, Isabel Cottingham
Can We Relate?, I Never Got The Message, Isabel Cottingham
Senior Projects Fall 2011
Artist’s Statement:
At the core, people are essentially the same. We are made from the same materials, with the same working parts, we need the same things in order to survive, we experience the same life cycle, and yet there is so much variety. I am interested in what defines people as who they are, what ingredients are in charge of creating an individual. I believe that, as people there are certain unifying aspects of our lives to which we are all able to connect. I am intrigued and challenged by the exploration of this. Fundamentally, I am fascinated by …
