Substance, Style, And Spirit: A Theology Of Worship And Church Growth, Alvin L. Reid
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The revolution in worship services in contemporary evangelicalism is obvious. Over 25,000 congregations use overhead projectors to sing contemporary choruses each Sunday. Multiple thousands of others sing only the old hymns of the faith. Many seek some sort of “blended” style to meet the needs of their members and to make the services palatable for the unchurched. Radical changes in corporate worship have led to “worship wars” in more than a few congregations.
A Philosophy Of Worship And Church Growth, Byron Spadlin
A Philosophy Of Worship And Church Growth, Byron Spadlin
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
It seems very clear—from the Scriptural record, as well as the realities each of us face in daily ministry—that there exists the need to develop a conscious philosophy of how worship relates to the whole arena of church growth. To that end then, let me make some suggestions, not so much in offering something brand new, but by giving some broad stroke observations and principles.

A Pastor’S Perspective On Worship And Church Growth, Glen Martin
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
This paper seeks to apply what the Bible says about the role of music in the church. 1. Worship enables the church to grow as it enhances the spiritual growth of the believer. 2. Worship is a major contributor to the assimilation process. 3. A positive experience in worship services will allow the leadership the freedom to try new things. 4. Worship styles allow the church to grow by targeting different audiences.

The Rationale For A Culturally Relevant Worship Service, George Hunter
The Rationale For A Culturally Relevant Worship Service, George Hunter
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
More and more churches, in most denominations and traditions, rely less upon pipe organs, hymnals, robed choirs, and the old European hymns, and rely more upon grand pianos, guitars, bands, drama teams, singing ensembles, and newer music with the words projected on a screen. The movement toward contemporary worship, however, has attracted its fair share of suspicion, criticism, and even rage.

Multiple Worship Services And Church Growth, Charles Arn
Multiple Worship Services And Church Growth, Charles Arn
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Approximately half of the 355,000 Protestant churches in the U.S. and Canada should consider adding a new style worship service to their weekly schedule of activities, regardless of the number of services they present offer. Of the churches that do begin a new service, eight out of ten will experience a measurable increase in 1) total worship attendance, 2) total giving, and 3) number of Christian conversions.

Trends In Worship And Church Growth Into The 21st Century, Byron Spadlin
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
As I have traveled, in this country and in others talking to numerous Christian leaders, and observing a number of different congregations, denominations and contexts, I believe the following major broad stroke trends regarding worship I believe can be anticipated by the churches and Christian communities around the world. 1. Controversy over worship styles will continue. 2. Diversity of Worship styles will increase. 3. Worship-based services will emerge and increase. 4. Inter-denominational and Regional Cooperation in worship events will increase. 5. Worship will be seen as Evangelism. 6. Evangelicals are experimenting with more formal liturgy and Orthodoxy. 7.
