Shock Wave Interaction With L-Shaped Structures, Richard C. Miller Dec 1993

Shock Wave Interaction With L-Shaped Structures, Richard C. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the interaction of shock waves with L-shaped structures using the CTH hydrodynamics code developed by Sandia National Laboratories. Computer models of shock waves traveling through air were developed using techniques similar to shock tube experiments. Models of L-shaped buildings were used to determine overpressures achieved by the reflecting shock versus angle of incidence of the shock front. An L-shaped building model rotated 45 degrees to the planar shock front produced the highest reflected overpressure of 9.73 atmospheres in the corner joining the two wings, a value 9.5 times the incident overpressure of 1.02 atmospheres. The same L-shaped …

The lower ranks still perceive themselves as clerks, whereas senior enlisted members consider themselves managers. Although the career field name changed to …

A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns Dec 1993

A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a multiresolution wavelet analysis tool for analyzing motion in time sequential imagery. A theoretical framework is developed for constructing an L2R wavelet multiresolution analysis from three non-identical spatial and temporal L2R wavelet multiresolution analyses. This framework provides the flexibility to tailor the spatio-temporal frequency characteristics of the three dimensional wavelet filter to match the frequency behavior of the analyzed signal. An unconventional, discrete multiresolution wavelet decomposition algorithm is developed which yields a rich set of independent spatio-temporally oriented frequency channels for analyzing, the size and speed characteristics of moving objects. Unlike conventional wavelet decomposition methods, this algorithm …

Simultaneous Design Of Active Vibration Control And Passive Damping, Michele Lynn Devereaux Gaudreault Dec 1993

Simultaneous Design Of Active Vibration Control And Passive Damping, Michele Lynn Devereaux Gaudreault

Theses and Dissertations

A modified form of the standard linear quadratic regulator LQR cost functional is used to optimally blend active vibration control and passive structural damping, whether viscous or viscoelastic. Viscoelastic damping is first modelled by a standard linear model, and then by a fractional derivative model. For the viscous damping case and the classically modelled viscoelastic damping case, a sub-optimal closed form solution is derived that is independent of the initial conditions. An iterative technique that minimizes the average value of the cost functional and one that minimizes the maximum value are developed. Both techniques are applicable to viscous and viscoelastic …

Evaluation Of An Acoustic Charge Transport (Act) Device For Adaptive Interference Suppression In Spread Spectrum Communications Systems, Michael S. Mills

Theses and Dissertations

Analytical results have shown that adaptive filtering can be a powerful tool for the rejection of narrowband interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum receiver. However, the complexity of adaptive filtering hardware has hindered the experimental validation of these results. This thesis describes a unique adaptive filter architecture for implementing the Widrow-Hoff Least- Mean-Square (LMS) algorithm using two state-of-the-art Acoustic Charge Transport (ACT) Programmable Transversal Filters (PTFs). Signal-to-noise ratio improvement measurements demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive filter for suppressing single- and dual-tone jammers at jammer-to-signal ratios (JSRs) of up to 30 dB. It is shown that the ACT adaptive …

Experimental Verification Of Tomographic Reconstruction Of Turbulent Air Flow Structure Using Optical Wavefront Measurements, Bryon L. Pedersen Dec 1993

Experimental Verification Of Tomographic Reconstruction Of Turbulent Air Flow Structure Using Optical Wavefront Measurements, Bryon L. Pedersen

Theses and Dissertations

The performance of an aircraft based optical system is degraded by aero-optic turbulence. The varying index of refraction within the turbulent field causes phase perturbation in an optical wave. In order to compensate for aero-optic turbulence effects, the nature of the turbulence must be understood. Large scale, organized structure within the turbulence has been found to contribute significantly to the overall phase perturbation caused by a turbulent field. A unique approach was devised to determine the turbulence structure using tomographic reconstruction techniques. Tomography provides an excellent means to determine the underlying structure within a turbulent field. The tomographic reconstruction produces …

Orbital Applications Of Electrodynamic Propulsion, Troy Irwin Dec 1993

Orbital Applications Of Electrodynamic Propulsion, Troy Irwin

Theses and Dissertations

Electrodynamic propulsion (EDP) uses forces resulting from electric currents in conductors as a spacecraft travels through a magnetic field. A vehicle-independent expression for the specific power required for any maneuver is derived and used to assess EDP feasibility. Analytical expressions for the accelerations and combined current-conductor vector required to change the orbital plane or the argument of perigee are developed based on Lagranges planetary equations. Solutions to the forced Clohessy-Wiltshire equations are developed to study iii-plane rendezvous. Results show EDP can change inclination or right ascension of the ascending mode at approximately 0.4 degrees/day with current spacecraft specific power technology. …

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the differences between a one-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) controller, in which a controller is placed in a single location in the control loop, and a two-degree- of-freedom (2-DOF) controller, in which two separate controllers are designed -- one in the feedback loop and the other as a prefilter in the forward loop. The approach involved summarizing the major rules governing loop shaping for performance and robustness in the 1-DOF case and then extending the concepts to the 2-DOF case. H2 optimization was utilized to perform several types of SISO examples and …

A Numerical Determination Of Bifurcation Points For Low Reynolds Number Conical Flows, Larry K. Waters Dec 1993

A Numerical Determination Of Bifurcation Points For Low Reynolds Number Conical Flows, Larry K. Waters

Theses and Dissertations

It has long been established that supersonic flow over axisymmetric conical bodies at high angles of attack tend to develop a side force due to vortical asymmetry. One of the proposed reasons for the asymmetry is a bifurcation point in the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. This study investigated the possible existence of a bifurcation point in the Navier-Stokes equations for subsonic flow. Newton's method, with gauss elimination, was used- to solve the steady-state, viscous, compressible Navier-Stokes equations in spherical coordinates assuming conical similarity.

Vulnerability Assessment Using A Fuzzy Logic Based Method, Richard W. Fleming Dec 1993

Vulnerability Assessment Using A Fuzzy Logic Based Method, Richard W. Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using qualitative analysis methods to evaluate computer security vulnerabilities. Although many risk analysis systems exist, few provide for the adequate analysis of identified vulnerabilities. While the main focus of this thesis is to evaluate computer security vulnerabilities, the methods involved have application in other areas requiring evaluation using qualitative methods. It is proposed, and demonstrated by this thesis, that the use of qualitative analysis using linguistic variables to describe the impact of computer security vulnerabilities is not only feasible, but intrinsically easier to understand and use than quantitative methods.

Using Discovery-Based Learning To Prove The Behavior Of An Autonomous Agent, David N. Mezera Dec 1993

Using Discovery-Based Learning To Prove The Behavior Of An Autonomous Agent, David N. Mezera

Theses and Dissertations

Computer-generated autonomous agents in simulation often behave predictably and unrealistically. These characteristics make them easy to spot and exploit by human participants in the simulation, when we would prefer the behavior of the agent to be indistinguishable from human behavior. An improvement in behavior might be possible by enlarging the library of responses, giving the agent a richer assortment of tactics to employ during a combat scenario. Machine learning offers an exciting alternative to constructing additional responses by hand by instead allowing the system to improve its own performance with experience. This thesis presents NOSTRUM, a discovery-based learning DBL system …
