The concept of "name" (ŠĒM) was very important in Semitic thought, and therefore important in the Old Testament. The purpose of this thesis is to delineate the meanings of ŠĒM and its cognates in Semitic literature, and to examine examples of the term in the Pentateuch in order to understand the place of "name" (especially God's name) in the theology of the Pentateuch.
