How Individual Differences And The Use Of Humor Shape Relationships In Teams Over Time, Melissa Vazquez
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Due to its ability to influence social interactions and relationships, humor can play an important role in team dynamics. The aims of this project are to examine how team member individual differences in humor styles relates to the expression of humor over time, and how humor usage shapes relationships between team members. Hypotheses were tested using data from highly interdependent teams working together over an extended period. Results have implications for the selection of team members, and the training and management of unique teams. In all, this research provides validation evidence for the HSQ measure as a predictor of humor …

Gospel Impact And Stewardship Tool (Gist): Visual Mapping To Discover Gospel Imperatives For Strategic Ministry Decisions, Martin Edward Lee
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Lee, Martin Edward “Gospel Impact and Stewardship Tool: Visual Mapping to Discover Gospel Imperatives for Strategic Ministry Decisions.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2021. 260 pp.
This research project and the resulting Gospel Impact and Stewardship Tool (“GIST”) addresses congregational stewardship deficits from a systems perspective, with a shared-stewardship imperative for all leaders and members of a congregation, instead of focusing stewardship on the individual. The GIST Ministry Map provides a visual picture of how individual ministries are interconnected. This project illustrates how a learning environment, and the GIST visual ministry mapping process, help improve strategic decision-making …

Utilizing The Radsm Process: Developing An Unobtrusive Measure Of Cohesion, Zachary Lee Rahner
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, verbal indicators produced following the RADSM process were used to code transcript data collected from 62 three-person teams playing a cooperative bridge crew simulator. A training dataset, consisting of 88 mission transcripts, and a testing dataset, consisting of 39 mission transcripts, were created from the data. Multilevel modeling was employed to develop a linear-regression algorithm to predict/measure team task and social cohesion. The findings revealed that task cohesion perceptions are linked to the proportion of speech dedicated to information requests and instructions, whereas social cohesion perceptions are associated with the proportion of speech dedicated to amusing and …

It's Not Just A Game: Exploring The Effects Of An Escape Room Team Building Intervention, Andrew C. Griggs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Escape rooms have been used as a training intervention in multiple contexts, but their efficacy as a team building intervention is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a team building escape room on perceptions of team processes and perceived team effectiveness, the sustainability of these effects, as well as relationships between team processes and task completion in this context. This research utilized archival data of 33 healthcare teams (n = 145 participants) completing a team building escape room and prospectively collected follow-up data from the same participants (n = 49 …
Fuelling Effects Of Unique Opinion Holder’S Emotions On Team Creativity: A Collective Information Processing Perspective, Hui Si Oh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Building on past studies that have found positive influence of minority member on team creativity, this research examined an underexplored yet crucial topic of a unique opinion holder’s happy and anger emotions on team creativity. Using a collective information processing perspective, this study examined whether the expression of anger and happiness would be beneficial for team creativity by spurring team members to respond qualitatively differently to each other’s ideas during the discussion. Additionally, this study examined whether the influence of a unique opinion holder’s emotions on team creativity through information-processing pathways would depend on individual members’ working memory capacities. Three …

The Relationships Between Personality Types And Project Management Team Satisfaction, Patrick Moran
Construction Management
This research studies the relationships between personality types in Project Managers and Project Engineers and how they relate to project team satisfaction. Goals this research set out to accomplish include: finding relationships between personality types and team satisfaction, determining if heterogeneous or homogeneous team compositions yield greater levels of satisfaction, and determining if certain personality types influence team satisfaction more than others. In order to answer these goals, a specific study was conducted comparing two project teams composed of PMs and PEs. These teams were instructed to complete the NERIS Type Explorer® along with a Likert Scale questionnaire to self-assess …
What Drives Collective Informal Learning : The Influence Of Team Learning Orientation, Process Efficacy, And Metacognition, Gabrielle Danna
What Drives Collective Informal Learning : The Influence Of Team Learning Orientation, Process Efficacy, And Metacognition, Gabrielle Danna
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The primary level of investigation for informal learning has been the individual level despite the social nature of informal learning, and organizational learning more broadly. This study extends goal orientation and self-regulated learning theoretical frameworks at the individual level to the collective team level to understand the inputs and processes that may predict team informal learning. A model is proposed where team learning orientation positively predicts team informal learning. Process efficacy and collective metacognition are proposed to mediate the relationship between team learning orientation and team informal learning. One hundred and two students holding a club officer position in 32 …
Teams In Small Organizations: Conceptual, Methodological, And Practical Considerations, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Victoria Kennel, Joseph A. Allen
Teams In Small Organizations: Conceptual, Methodological, And Practical Considerations, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Victoria Kennel, Joseph A. Allen
Psychology Faculty Publications
Research on teams and teamwork has flourished in the last few decades. Much of what we know about teams and teamwork comes from research using short-term student teams in the lab, teams in larger organizations, and, more recently, teams in rather unique and extreme environments. The context in which teams operate influences team composition, processes, and effectiveness. Small organizations are an understudied and often overlooked context that presents a rich opportunity to augment our understanding of teams and team dynamics. In this paper, we discuss how teams and multi-team systems in small organizations may differ from those found in larger …

Should Teamwork-Based Content Be Taught In The Cal Poly Construction Management Curriculum?, Matthew J. Sharman
Should Teamwork-Based Content Be Taught In The Cal Poly Construction Management Curriculum?, Matthew J. Sharman
Construction Management
At California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), in the Construction Management (CM) curriculum, there is a lack of teamwork-based content. This content includes negotiation, conflict resolution, and fundamental skills for working collaboratively with others such as social-emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication. The nature of the Cal Poly CM Program is to teach students about the aspects of the construction process, however what is missed is teaching how to work effectively in teams. They fail to teach this because of the strict curriculum of focusing on learning objectives rather than teaching individuals how to be effective construction managers. …
The Territoriality Of Teams: Assembling Power Through The Playing Of Pokémon Go, Orlando Woods
The Territoriality Of Teams: Assembling Power Through The Playing Of Pokémon Go, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper explores how the playing of Pokémon Go can cause power to be assembled, and team-based expressions of territoriality to manifest. By playing the game, players become embedded within digital assemblages of power, which they reproduce through their interactions with other players, game features, and public spaces. When digital assets—such as gyms—are indexed to public spaces, players work together in teams to compete for digital ownership, and control, of these assets. In turn, this leads to the forging of a team-based sense of territoriality that is pervasive, and maximized by consolidating the power of the assemblage. Qualitative data are …
Constructing A Vision In A Small Group: A Narrative Analysis Of A Forensics Team, Ryan Lauth
Constructing A Vision In A Small Group: A Narrative Analysis Of A Forensics Team, Ryan Lauth
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
In an effort to replace many of the forensics programs that are lost every year to budget cuts and coaching changes, many in the forensics community are making an effort to build new teams. Through the observation of team meetings and interactions I have used small group theory to analyze the vision the new team at Miami University has constructed. Hopefully, other coaches can use this information to develop a unifying vision that can foster team growth.
Despite the long and impressive competitive success at Miami University, the turnover in the coaching staff has also resulted in a high turnover …

Towards More Efficient Behavioral Coding Of Teamwork Via Machine Learning, Michelle Leigh Flynn
All Dissertations
Teams have been an integral part of organizational success for several decades and as such, researchers have sought to better understand all aspects of work teams. To better inform research and practice, Marks, Mathieu and Zaccaro (2001) advanced a theory and framework of team processes that has become a seminal piece in our field. Their theory proposed that ten team processes could be mapped on to three second order constructs (transition, action, and interpersonal phases). Mathieu and colleagues (2019) developed and validated a measure designed specifically to align with Marks et al. (2001) framework. While much needed, this measure is …

Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs
In the book The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups, Daniel Coyle discusses how people work together as part of a group that achieves excellent results. As opposed to this being a book on how individuals lead, the author focuses on how people interact successfully and productively with each other; thereby, giving leaders three skills that can help hone successful teams. His research identified three skills that propel effective teamwork: Build Safety, Share Vulnerability, and Establish Purpose. This book review will briefly describe these skills and how the book provides a solid base for leaders seeking to …

Identifying Thematic Patterns Of Autonomy Shifts And Team Boundary Work For Long Duration Spaceflight Multiteam Missions, Lizandra Alvarado
Identifying Thematic Patterns Of Autonomy Shifts And Team Boundary Work For Long Duration Spaceflight Multiteam Missions, Lizandra Alvarado
All Theses
As long duration exploration missions (LDEMs) become the norm for spaceflight, it is important to understand the factors that may influence how astronaut crews and ground control teams work together. Although there are numerous efforts underway to continue to push boundaries in space exploration, much of the existing work to examine teamwork is designed to primarily address intrateam issues, not considering how inter-team factors may predict team and mission performance. Given the potential future challenges and uncertainties of LDEMs, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a need for risk-mitigating spaceflight multiteam system (SFMTS) interventions designed to resolve …

Causes Of 30-Day Readmission And Methods To Reduce It, Rachel M. Feeney
Honors Capstones
When a patient is readmitted within 30 days of discharge, the hospital is required to pay for the hospitalization, and the patient is at risk for poor outcomes. Many factors can increase a patient’s risk for readmission, including culture, fall risk, age, and social factors. Many hospitals have created a system to combat and reduce 30-day readmissions. These methods include assessing patient’s acuity for readmission, using home visits or phone calls, remote monitoring, creating better environments for workers, and more. The results of this literary review emphasize the need to assess patients for their readmission risk and the effectiveness of …

Assessing The Impacts Of Work-Related Applications Of Improvisation Training On Psychological Safety In Teams, Marne Maykowskyj Nordean
Assessing The Impacts Of Work-Related Applications Of Improvisation Training On Psychological Safety In Teams, Marne Maykowskyj Nordean
Theses and Dissertations
This paper discusses improvisational training (IMPT) and psychological safety and seeks to find if the former impacts the latter. For this study, improvisation has four main tenets: ensemble / co-creating, 'yes, and' / accept and heighten, authenticity / celebrating failure, and listening and communication skills. Psychological safety is defined as the shared belief held by members of a team that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking and a sense of confidence that the team will not embarrass, reject or punish someone for speaking up. This confidence stems from mutual respect and trust among team members. It is described as …

Mutual Accountability And Its Impacts On Cross-Functional Teams, Lori E. Simms
Theses and Dissertations
The intent of cross-functional teams is to bring together diverse individuals of relevant functional expertise from across an organization to solve problems rapidly and efficiently. The difficulty with cross-functional teams is in establishing and maintaining mutual accountability because individuals come with their respective individual accountabilities and the methods for which those accountabilities were established. This qualitative study explored mutual accountability, how it is established, and its impact on cross-functional teams. Nine individuals participated in semi-structured interviews to explore how mutual accountability is established, barriers to establishing and maintaining it, and the impact of its presence or lack thereof on the …
