Linked Data And The Library Of Congress, Corinne M. Laurence Dec 2013

Linked Data And The Library Of Congress, Corinne M. Laurence

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a machine-processable metadata standard created to link pieces of data from around the World Wide Web. It does this by creating meaningful statements about resources, which are identified by Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). The Linked Data (LD) that emerges will be part of the Semantic Web, a new way of linking, searching, and finding information on the Web. Libraries around the world have begun to adopt RDF for their metadata in an attempt to make their metadata more discoverable on the World Wide Web, where the majority of their users are. The Library of …

Ontology-Guided Extraction Of Structured Information From Unstructured Text: Identifying And Capturing Complex Relationships, Sushain Pandit Oct 2013

Ontology-Guided Extraction Of Structured Information From Unstructured Text: Identifying And Capturing Complex Relationships, Sushain Pandit

Sushain Pandit

Many applications call for methods to enable automatic extraction of structured information from unstructured natural language text. Due to the inherent challenges of natural language processing, most of the existing methods for information extraction from text tend to be domain specific. This thesis explores a modular ontology-based approach to information extraction that decouples domain-specific knowledge from the rules used for information extraction. Specifically, the thesis describes: 1. A framework for ontology-driven extraction of a subset of nested complex relationships (e.g., Joe reports that Jim is a reliable employee) from free text. The extracted relationships are semantically represented in the form …

Semantic Assistance For Data Utilization And Curation, Brian J. Becker Aug 2013

Semantic Assistance For Data Utilization And Curation, Brian J. Becker

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We propose that most data stores for large organizations are ill-designed for the future, due to limited searchability of the databases. The study of the Semantic Web has been an emerging technology since first proposed by Berners-Lee. New vocabularies have emerged, such as FOAF, Dublin Core, and PROV-O ontologies. These vocabularies, combined, can relate people, places, things, and events. Technologies developed for the Semantic Web, namely the standardized vocabularies for expressing metadata, will make data easier to utilize. We gathered use cases for various data sources, from human resources to big enterprise. Most of our use cases reflect real-world data. …

Rdf-Based Data Integration For Workflow Systems, Jun Shen, Yun Yang Dec 2012

Rdf-Based Data Integration For Workflow Systems, Jun Shen, Yun Yang

Dr Jun Shen

To meet the requirements of interoperability, the enactment of workflow systems for processes should tackle the problem of data integration for effective data sharing and exchange. This paper aims at flexibly describing workflow entities and relationships by innovative ontology engineering, which are emerging in process-centred environments, supported by Resource Description Framework (RDF) based languages and tools. Our novel framework takes into consideration to position the ontology level in the data integration dimension. Having taken a more realistic approach towards interoperability, we present basic constructs of a workflow specific ontology, with a suite of classes and properties selectively created. In particular, …

The paper presents the use of Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) in Chelm Cement Plant (Poland). These types of fuels are produced from non-hazardous waste and can be used for energy recovery in waste co-combustion plants. They are much cheaper compared to primary fuels, so their use in the process of cement clinker burning brings evident economic benefits. Chelm cement plant owned by the CEMEX company is a leader in the use of alternative fuels in Poland. In the years 2005-2011 the amount of co-combustion of alternative fuels in the cement had risen from 107 to 318 thousand tons, and their …

Co-Incineration Of Large Quantities Of Alternative Fuels In A Cement Kiln – The Problem Of Air Pollutant Emissions, Robert Oleniacz, Magdalena Kasietczuk

Robert Oleniacz

Over the last few years, a significant increase in the use of alternative fuels in the Polish cement industry has been observed. These are mainly waste and waste-derived fuels. The national leader in this field is Chełm cement plant (Poland), with the share of alternative fuels in the cement kiln heat balance reaching in 2012 the level of 78.5%. In this paper, an analysis of the emission rate of air pollutants from cement clinkering process in the above-mentioned cement plant in the years 1998–2012 was carried out, using the results of continuous and periodic measurements. The compliance with the emission …

Developing A Semantic Web Crawler To Locate Owl Documents, Ronald Dean Koron Jan 2012

Developing A Semantic Web Crawler To Locate Owl Documents, Ronald Dean Koron

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The terms Semantic Web and OWL are relatively new and growing concepts in the World Wide Web. Because these concepts are so new there are relatively few applications and/or tools for utilizing the potential power of this new concept. Although there are many components to the Semantic Web, this thesis will focus on the research question, "How do we go about developing a web crawler for the Semantic Web that locates and retrieves OWL documents." Specifically for this thesis, we hypothesize that by giving URIs to OWL documents, including all URIs from within these OWL documents, priority over other types …

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Storing data in RDF format helps in simpler data interchange among different researchers compared to present approaches. There has been tremendous increase in the applications that use RDF data. The nature of RDF data is such that it tends to increase explosively. This makes it necessary to consider the time for retrieval and scalability of data while selecting a suitable RDF data store for developing applications. The research concentrates on comparing BigOWLIM. Bigdata, 4store and Virtuoso RDF stores on basis of their scalability and performance of storing and retrieving cancer proteomics and mass spectrometry data using SPARQL queries. In this …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of dynamic information sources - like social, mobile and sensors, has led to ginormous streams of real time data on the web also called, the era of Big Data [1]. Research studies suggest, these dynamic networks have created more data in the last three years than in the entire history of civilization, and this trend will only increase in the coming years [1]. Gigaom article on Big data shows, how the total information generated by these dynamic information sources has completely surpassed the total storage capacity. Thus keeping in mind the problem of ever-increasing data, this thesis focuses …

S2st: A Relational Rdf Database Management System, Anthony T. Piazza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The explosive growth of RDF data on the Semantic Web drives the need for novel database systems that can efficiently store and query large RDF datasets. To achieve good performance and scalability of query processing, most existing RDF storage systems use a relational database management system as a backend to manage RDF data. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a Relational RDF Database Management System. Our main research contributions are: (1) We propose a formal model of a Relational RDF Database Management System (RRDBMS), (2) We propose generic algorithms for schema, data and query mapping, (3) …

Aggregations of Web resources are increasingly important in scholarship as it adopts new methods that are data-centric, collaborative, and networked-based. The same notion of aggregations of resources is common to the mashed-up, socially networked information environment of Web 2.0. We present a mechanism to identify and describe aggregations of Web resources that has resulted from the Open Archives Initiative - Object Reuse and Exchange (OAI-ORE) project. The OAI-ORE specifications are based on the principles of the Architecture of the World Wide Web, the Semantic Web, and the Linked Data effort. Therefore, their incorporation into the cyberinfrastructure that supports eScholarship will …

We developed a novel analytical environment to aid in the examination of the extensive amount of interconnected data available for genome projects. Our focus is to enable flexibility and abstraction from implementation details, while retaining the expressivity required for post-genomic research. To achieve this goal, we associated genomics data to ontologies and implemented a query formulation and execution environment with added visualization capabilities. We use ontology schemas to guide the user through the process of building complex queries in a flexible Web interface. Queries are serialized in SPARQL and sent to servers via Ajax. A component for visualization of the …

A Framework To Support Spatial, Temporal And Thematic Analytics Over Semantic Web Data, Matthew Perry, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Spatial and temporal data are critical components in many applications. This is especially true in analytical applications ranging from scientific discovery to national security and criminal investigation. The analytical process often requires uncovering and analyzing complex thematic relationships between disparate people, places and events. Fundamentally new query operators based on the graph structure of Semantic Web data models, such as semantic associations, are proving useful for this purpose. However, these analysis mechanisms are primarily intended for thematic relationships. In this paper, we describe a framework built around the RDF data model for analysis of thematic, spatial and temporal relationships between …

Entrez Gene (EG), Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and the Gene Ontology (GO) are three complementary knowledge resources that can be used to correlate genomic data with disease information. However, bridging between genotype and phenotype through these resources currently requires manual effort or the development of customized software. In this paper, we argue that integrating EG and GO provides a robust and flexible solution to this problem. We demonstrate how the Resource Description Framework (RDF) developed for the Semantic Web can be used to represent and integrate these resources and enable seamless access to them as a unified resource. …

As the Semantic Web gains importance for sharing knowledge on the Internet this has lead to the development and publishing of many ontologies in different domains. When trying to reuse existing ontologies into their applications, users are faced with the problem of determining if an ontology is suitable for their needs. In this paper, we introduce OntoQA, an approach that analyzes ontology schemas and their populations (i.e. knowledgebases) and describes them through a well defined set of metrics. These metrics can highlight key characteristics of an ontology schema as well as its population and enable users to make an informed …

Discovering patterns in graphs has long been an area of interest. In most contemporary approaches to such pattern discovery either quantitative anomalies or frequency of substructure is used to measure the interestingness of a pattern. In this paper we address the issue of discovering informative sub-graphs within RDF graphs. We motivate our work with an example related to Semantic Search. A user might pose a question of the form: ' What are the most relevant ways in which entity X is related to entity Y?' the response to which is a subgraph connecting X to Y. Relevance of the …

Ρ-Queries: Enabling Querying For Semantic Associations On The Semantic Web, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth

This paper presents the notion of Semantic Associations as complex relationships between resource entities. These relationships capture both a connectivity of entities as well as similarity of entities based on a specific notion of similarity called ρ-isomorphism. It formalizes these notions for the RDF data model, by introducing a notion of a Property Sequence as a type. In the context of a graph model such as that for RDF, Semantic Associations amount to specific certain graph signatures. Specifically, they refer to sequences (i.e. directed paths) here called Property Sequences, between entities, networks of Property Sequences (i.e. undirected paths), or subgraphs …

Ontology-Based Extraction Of Rdf Data From The World Wide Web, Timothy Adam Chartrand Mar 2003

Ontology-Based Extraction Of Rdf Data From The World Wide Web, Timothy Adam Chartrand

Theses and Dissertations

The simplicity and proliferation of the World Wide Web (WWW) has taken the availability of information to an unprecedented level. The next generation of the Web, the Semantic Web, seeks to make information more usable by machines by introducing a more rigorous structure based on ontologies. One hinderance to the Semantic Web is the lack of existing semantically marked-up data. Until there is a critical mass of Semantic Web data, few people will develop and use Semantic Web applications. This project helps promote the Semantic Web by providing content. We apply existing information-extraction techniques, in particular, the BYU ontologybased data-extraction …

The paper presents a review of emissions of main gaseous pollutants (including acidic constituents), some organic compounds (including dioxins and furans), particulates and heavy metals from cement kilns burning waste fuels.

A widely employed method to reduce the cost of cement production is the substitution of traditional fuels used in cement kilns with alternative and waste-derived fuels. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of waste (especially hazardous waste) thermal treatment and disposal at much lower cost than commercial incinerators. Characteristic for cement kilns high temperatures and long residence time of exhaust gas ensure almost complete destruction of organic compounds …

A widely employed method of reducing cement production costs is the substitution of traditional fuels with alternative and waste-derived fuels to heat the cement kiln. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of hazardous waste incineration and co-combustion with significantly lower cost in comparison to incinerators. The high temperatures and long residence times inherent in the operation of cement kilns ensure the almost complete destruction of the organic compounds introduced together with waste fuels. This part of the article presents general characteristic of sort of waste incinerated in cement kilns, way of their charging, advantages and limitations of waste co-combustion …
