Adolescents who run away from home cause major problems for themselves, for their parents, and for society. In this study runaways (n = 112) are compared to non-runaways (n = 211) in their perceptions- of self, their parents and the world in which they live by use of a self-reporting survey. It was hypothesized that runaways would have perceptions of self, parents, and the world that would be skewed to society's unacceptable end of the scale. The assessment and evaluation of the Kinetic Family Drawing Instrument as a screening device was used to identify possible "at risk” first grade students in public school. It was hypothesized that the KFD would serve as a better means of identification than teacher referral alone. Seventy-five first grade students from a Chapter I school participated in the study. A check list of seven classroom behaviors was given to the teachers of the participating students to identify "at risk" behaviors in the classroom. A review of related literature indicated a person's perception of negative life experiences may be unusually high prior to the onset of an illness. An external locus of control belief system may also be present prior to the onset of an illness. The present study used the Life Experiences Survey measure to compare the perception of life experiences of a group of people with CFIDS and a group of people without CFIDS.
