Review Of Deconstructing Service In Libraries: Intersections Of Identities And Expectations, Emily Komornik

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In Deconstructing Service in Libraries: Intersections of Identities and Expectations, Veronica Arellano Douglas and Joanna Gadsby bring together nineteen essays from the perspectives of library workers of differing race, ethnicity, gender identity, and job title to discuss service and what it means in their respective roles. Arellano Douglas and Gadsby’s edited volume offers essays that highlight the frustration of librarians who feel underappreciated, undervalued, and, perhaps most importantly, underestimated in their professional spaces. Within Deconstructing Service in Libraries, Arellano Douglas and Gadsby collect insightful, real-world examples of library professionals tackling these issues, offering solidarity alongside valuable professional advice. Designing A Program To Increase Enrollment And Retention Of Hispanic Children In Public Health Insurance Programs In Virginia: Lessons Learned, Cara Tonn

College of Health Sciences Posters

Children who have ongoing healthcare coverage benefit from improved health, education, and economic outcomes due to increased preventive services use and regular school attendance. These factors play a crucial part in determining a child’s level of education and future economic status. However, children eligible for publicly funded health insurance remain uninsured or experience “churning” throughout childhood and adolescence. Barriers to healthcare retention include lack of program awareness and understanding of the application process and belief that healthcare coverage only provides marginal benefits. Additionally, denial due to incorrect paperwork also contributes to low retention rates. Children who live in non-English speaking …

‘Standing Side By Side, Looking At The Student’: School And University Staff Perspectives Of Partnership In The Australian And United Kingdom Widening Participation Contexts, Kylie Suzanne Austin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Partnerships have been positioned as a critical vehicle to delivering Widening Participation (WP) and subsequently increasing access to higher education in the Australian and United Kingdom (UK) national policy contexts. Collaboration between schools, universities, vocational education providers, community organisations and industry is needed to broaden exposure to diverse pathways and professions beyond post-secondary schooling and reduce barriers to enable individuals to seamlessly transition between education and employment. Despite this, there has been an absence of guidelines and clear processes in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of WP partnerships in Australia, resulting in partnerships being implemented in disparate and underdeveloped ways. …

While adhering to the core principles of library outreach and engagement, the library has shifted the modality and types of programming offered to meet safety guidelines. Online event assessment, promotion, and engagement will also be discussed.

Rethink, Reuse, Recycle: Turning An Existing Workshop Into A Virtual Opportunity For Outreach And Engagement, Jason Wardell, Bridget Retzloff, Joan Plungis

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

This case study of using a webinar series as a library marketing technique shares the process, communications, and assessment results from a well-attended online event, “Summer of Citations.” An in-person citation management software workshop for graduate students by librarians at a small midwestern private university served as a springboard for the series. Targeted to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate honors students, the Zoom-based, 45-minute sessions covered a different product on each of three successive days. A common structure for each presentation, along with the use of Springshare modules for registration and assessment, facilitated the event’s rapid production and easy replication.

The Mystery Of The Dancing Men, Manmohan Kaur Jul 2021

The Mystery Of The Dancing Men, Manmohan Kaur

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this paper I describe an activity based on a 1903 Sherlock Holmes murder mystery, in which a substitution cipher is used to encrypt secret messages. The story provides a fun and interesting way to talk about frequency analysis, and can be used as a segue into mathematical constructs such as modular arithmetic and computation. The activity is accessible to ages twelve and above, and has been successfully used in mathematics outreach and popularization efforts as well as in general education and mathematics courses.

Quick Pivots: Maintaining An Agile Approach To Outreach During An Evolving Crisis, Holly M. Surbaugh

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic during the spring and summer of 2020, the University Libraries piloted enhanced virtual outreach initiatives, including an online event series and scaled-up social media activity. The Summer of Sci Fi (SoSF) consisted of three Zoom-facilitated programs that offered fun activities designed to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. Numerous “quick pivots” were necessary to accommodate unpredictable circumstances throughout the pilot implementation. This experience has demonstrated the advantages of approaching outreach with an agile stance, particularly during a crisis.

Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt Jul 2021

Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt

Georgia Library Quarterly

Providing access to information is one mission of libraries and librarians. Programs and outreach are important aspects of accomplishing this mission. The implementation of the bookmobile program in the United States in the early 1900s provided access to those who couldn’t easily travel to a library. There are many people, then and now, who struggle to access libraries and the valuable resources libraries provide. Those people are the benefiters of the utilization of this innovative idea. Bookmobiles were valuable programs in the early 1900s and continue to be a useable and needed program today.

Rebuilding Orcid Campus Outreach During A Pandemic, Christina M. Miskey

Library Faculty Publications

Since 2017, ORCID outreach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has stagnated due to insufficient staffing. A new librarian was tasked in early 2020 with facilitating new ORCID campus outreach and education with campus researchers. Simultaneously, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the university campus to shut down, which significantly limited the ability to forge relationships and outreach. Despite these challenges, the new librarian managed to rebuild campus partnerships, establish relationships with library colleagues, and develop an outreach plan that focused on creating virtual services such as workshops and on expanding digital resources such as LibGuides and tutorials to reach faculty …

Migration As A Determinant Of Childhood Obesity In The United States And Latin America, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Arturo V. Bustamante, Nancy López-Olmedo, Pablo Gaitán-Rossi, Jaqueline Torres, Karen E. Peterson, Graciela Teruel, Rafael Pérez-Escamilla

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

International migration has economic and health implications. The acculturation process to the host country may be linked to childhood obesity. We use the Community Energy Balance (CEB) framework to analyze the relationship between migration and childhood obesity in Mexican households with international migrants. Using longitudinal data from the Mexican Family Life Survey (MxFLS), we examine how migrant networks affect childhood obesity in origin communities. We also review binational health programs that could be effective at tackling childhood obesity in migrant households from Mexico. Children embedded in migrant networks are at greater risk of developing overweight or obesity, suggesting a significant …

People-First Promotion: Rallying Library Workers During Covid-19 And Beyond, Katy Kelly, Christina A. Beis, Ann Zlotnik, Maureen E. Schlangen

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

COVID-19 forced workers around the world to face the realities of closed buildings, precarious employment situations, and challenges to their well-being. This article will showcase how library workers’ resilience during COVID-19 depended on people, not buildings, and a people-first public relations strategy was employed to reveal that distinction. The authors, a team of librarians and communicators, share three pandemic-era communication stories developed to put people at the forefront of initiatives and messaging: a revamped marketing strategy for a research appointment service puts faces to the work and student support; the cancellation announcement of a beloved annual event reveals how the …

Development Of Future Leaders In The Christian Church, Albert Lee Crout

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The thesis project, Development of Future Leaders in the Christian Church, was developed to address the decline in youth attendance, retention, and participation in The Mountain Christian Church in Nicholasville, Kentucky. There has been a consistent decline in the number of youths who attend and participate in the church after high school graduation. After a review of literature and case study, which included a survey, questionnaire, and roundtable discussions, this researcher determined that the cause of the problem was that the church lacked programs for youth that lead them to Christian maturity and an opportunity for leadership skills training. The …

Disaster Preparedness Plan For Cascade Hills Church, Columbus, Georgia, Kenneth Durell Dawson Jun 2021

Disaster Preparedness Plan For Cascade Hills Church, Columbus, Georgia, Kenneth Durell Dawson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

While churches, especially large churches, may consider themselves well-prepared for a disruption in normal activities, the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated churches’ lack of preparedness on multiple levels. This disaster as well as other natural or manmade disasters could disrupt normal functions of a church and seriously impede a church’s outreach to the community. This project defines the problem and delineates a plan for Cascade Hills Church in Columbus, Georgia. This study designs and implements an intervention by interviewing church staff members and by seeking the input of an expert in the field of disaster recovery. Results are measured by a tabletop …
