Reservoir Characterization Of The Utica Shale Play Using Well Log Data In Columbiana, Ohio, Tyler L. West
Reservoir Characterization Of The Utica Shale Play Using Well Log Data In Columbiana, Ohio, Tyler L. West
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Ordovician Utica shale play is rapidly developing throughout the Appalachian Basin. The play is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system that grades from primarily carbonates at its base in the Lexington/Trenton limestones into primarily shale within the Utica shale. As of January 2021, it is the third highest-producing dry shale gas play in the contiguous U.S., although it is known to produce wet gas and oil in various parts of the basin. In addition to being an unconventional reservoir, the Utica shale, an informal unit in Ohio where the main fairway is located, is a known source rock for much of …
Taking The Gavel Away From The Executive Branch: The Indeterminate Sentencing Scheme Under S.B. 201 Is Ripe For Review And Unconstitutional, Jessica Crtalic
Taking The Gavel Away From The Executive Branch: The Indeterminate Sentencing Scheme Under S.B. 201 Is Ripe For Review And Unconstitutional, Jessica Crtalic
Cleveland State Law Review
In 2019, Senate Bill 201, also known as the Reagan Tokes Act, reintroduced an indeterminate sentencing scheme in Ohio whereby sentences are assigned in the form of a range. Under this sentencing scheme, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, through the parole board, has discretion to retain an inmate past the presumptive release date. This fails to afford the accused their guaranteed right to a jury trial, improperly places judiciary power in the hands of the executive branch, and scrutinizes the violation of due process such that the defendant is being denied a fair hearing and notice. Not only …

The Criminalization Of Female Genital Mutilation In Ohio: A Social And Political Analysis, Madsyn Selph
The Criminalization Of Female Genital Mutilation In Ohio: A Social And Political Analysis, Madsyn Selph
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research examines the public attitudes towards the criminalization of female genital mutilation (“FGM”) in Ohio in 2018 with the passage of S.B. 214. Content from The Columbus Dispatch, testimony in favor of the bill, and an oral history with a current Ohio Senator who was a House Representative in 2018 were used as data in this research. Data are examined using group threat theory to better understand the attitudes of the Columbus public towards trends in immigration and FGM. Results find that anti-Islam and anti-African sentiments (and specifically anti-Somali sentiments) were widely found in these data, as well as …

O-High-O: A Policy Note On Ohio's Current Push For Recreational Marijuana Legislation And How Other States Have Created Successful Recreational Marijuana Laws, Alexander M. Stewart
Et Cetera
Many states have gone on to pass comprehensive recreational marijuana laws that have greatly benefitted their economy, public health, and criminal justice system. Ohio currently allows for the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, and there has been past attempts to enact legislation that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana, but the past proposals failed to gain the widespread support required to become law. This Note seeks to analyze and understand other states’ legislation in an attempt to understand what successful recreational marijuana legislation looks like. This Note concludes with a comprehensive proposal that contains all the essential elements …
An Evidence-Based Approach To Improving The Quality Of Sex Education In Ohio, Alyssa Buschur
An Evidence-Based Approach To Improving The Quality Of Sex Education In Ohio, Alyssa Buschur
Honors Projects
Sex education is arguably one of the most controversial subjects in the United States education system. Because education is primarily considered a state’s responsibility, it is difficult to ensure consistent material is being taught from state to state. Although comprehensive sex education has been proven to be effective, most states including Ohio, lean towards an abstinence-only approach. Ohio currently has very vague and limited sex education policies. In this paper, I will analyze sex education at the federal, state, and district levels (in Ohio) to determine the current state of affairs. I will utilize a case-study analysis of three Ohio …

Celebration of Student Research and Creative Activity
Extensive research has been conducted to examine the relationship between district demographics and the political ideology of legislators. In this study, we examine the relationship between district demographics and the ideologies of members in the Ohio State House elected in 2016. Our measures of ideology include legislators’ American Conservative Union scores and the Shor-McCarty ideological measure. The study controls for legislator partisanship, as well as district level characteristics such as median income, and the percent of non-white residents.
Sherwood Anderson And The Industrial Corruption Of Midwestern Individualism, Hudson Rice
Sherwood Anderson And The Industrial Corruption Of Midwestern Individualism, Hudson Rice
Senior Honors Theses
Sherwood Anderson’s literary Midwest reflects many of the idealistic characteristics resulting from the region’s frontier, agrarian origin. The most prominent of these characteristics is the region’s emphasis on and appreciation of human particularity. His novels Winesburg, Ohio and Poor White document the region’s unique relationship with individual particularity and how this particularity clashed with a new industrial lifestyle. The two novels reflect the Midwest’s unique understanding of individuality and offer an explanation for why the region’s response to an industrial cultural overhaul was so damaging for the Midwest’s identity, as the traditional identity was supplanted by an industrial one.

Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas
Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas
San Diego Law Review
For more than a century, the Supreme Court has struggled to develop a coherent and sustainable theory of the Fourth Amendment. Before the ink is dry on a new Fourth Amendment opinion, it is cabined, abrogated, or outright overruled. As one scholar has commented, the “evolution of Fourth Amendment doctrine over the past century bears a striking resemblance to Hamlet’s descent into insanity.” While the Court vacillates between “theories” of the Fourth Amendment that might bring clarity to a difficult body of constitutional law, the rights it bespeaks lie vulnerable and unprotected. This Article argues that the problem flows from …

The Impact Of Healthcare Disparities In Rural Ohio, Bailey Stammen, Sara Curtis
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Rural communities in the state of Ohio face barriers to care that affect the health of the population. This paper investigates the extent to which the general state of health, life expectancy, uninsured rates, and access to primary care providers can be affected by living in a rural community and how these variables have changed over time. Data from urban and rural counties in Ohio, taken from 2016 to 2022 via the 2022 County Health Rankings, will be used to explore health-related concerns. There were significant findings of decreased general health and access to primary care providers for rural communities …

Effects Of Insurance Coverage On Healthcare Access And Outcomes For Children In Ohio, Haley Hurst, Patrick Ruz
Effects Of Insurance Coverage On Healthcare Access And Outcomes For Children In Ohio, Haley Hurst, Patrick Ruz
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Objective: Despite health insurance coverage correlating to improved child health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs, it is estimated that 8.7% of children in America lack continuous insurance. Although coverage has expanded multiple times through the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) initiated in 1997, rates for child insurance vary drastically across regions of the country. In this study we investigated child insurance rates over time and by state, as well as explored the effects of having insurance and child health outcomes. To do this, we measured the association of uninsured children to primary care physician access and child mortality in the …

Uninsurance Rates And Associated Impacts Within Urban And Rural Counties In Ohio In 2022, Anneliese M. Fisher, Megan Sharifi
Uninsurance Rates And Associated Impacts Within Urban And Rural Counties In Ohio In 2022, Anneliese M. Fisher, Megan Sharifi
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Background: Rural populations comprise of 20% of the American population and 19% of those individuals are over the age of 65 (compared to 15% in urban areas).1,2 There has been an increase in discussion surrounding the social determinants of health (SDOH), and the literature shows that the SDOH often disproportionately impact individuals based on where they live, including rural areas. The rural-urban mortality rate disparity within the United States has been growing and has been attributed to levels of poverty.3 The SDOH also include access to healthcare and insurance, and insurance coverage is associated with higher healthcare access and quality.4 …
Variation In Ohio Police Response To Mental Health Crises, Brett Dietrich
Variation In Ohio Police Response To Mental Health Crises, Brett Dietrich
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The following paper aims to identify and explain variation in Ohio police department methods of response to calls for service (CFS) involving mental health crises. Police response to mentally ill or disturbed individuals has become a topic of increased discussion in recent decades. Communities have attempted to bring reform to this area with alternative solutions, including specially trained police officers, co-response with social workers, or community-based response teams. Geographic and demographic factors such as police department size, population served, and availability of mental health resources impact how communities and police departments approach this issue. This paper consists of a literature …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Upon completion of my Honors Project, I will have filmed, edited, planned, and directed a documentary on poverty in Akron. Through film, I will show the community what it is like to be homeless, without anyone there to look out for you. I will journey across Akron alongside my friend Jordan, looking to find a specific homeless man we once met. Along the way, I hope to come across other people without homes who will share stories about their lives, either in passing or through interviews. If I do not end up finding the man I set out to find, …
Due Process Junior: Competent (Enough) For The Court, Tigan Woolson
Due Process Junior: Competent (Enough) For The Court, Tigan Woolson
Journal of Law and Health
There are many reports presenting expert policy recommendations, and a substantial volume of research supporting them, that detail what should shape and guide statutes for juvenile competency to stand trial. Ohio has adopted provisions consistent with some of these recommendations, which is better protection than relying on case law and the adult statutes, as some states have done. However, the Ohio statute should be considered a work in progress.
Since appeals courts are unlikely to provide meaningful review for the substance of a juvenile competency determination, the need for procedures for ensuring that the determination is initially made in a …

Fog Of War; Cloud Of Memory: The Fifty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry Shiloh's Story, Jared Daniel Williams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Fifty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry was created on September 6, 1861. Men throughout the southern counties of Ohio flocked to Jackson, Ohio to join the new regiment. Poor leadership, supply issues, and inexperience immediately plagued the Fifty-Third Ohio. The Ohioans first experienced enemy fire on the morning of April 6, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. Throughout the war, the Fifty-Third Ohio fought at many battles including Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. More than any other conflict, the regiment’s first combat experience remained linked to its reputation and honor. During the opening fight at Shiloh, the regiment was ordered to retreat …
