A Structure for the Americanization League of Midtown Manhattan

'The Thesis will be an intervention on the property of the Seagram Building designed by Mies van der Rohe completed in 1958. Robert Motherwell on Paper: Gesture, Variation, and Continuity

October 17 to December 13, 1997

Marsh Art Gallery

Introduction

Abstract art is stripped bare of other things in order to intensify its rhythms, spatial intervals, and color structure, a process of emphasis. - Robert Motherwell

The renowned Abstract Expressionist artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), best known as a painter, produced a remarkable body of works on paper. His drawings, prints, and collages show an intimate side of his visual sensibility and reveal the very personal "handwriting" of the artist as he responded to the subtleties of paper, both as a medium and …

Contemporary Truths Through Creation-Centered Mythology A Visual Through Process, Ann Therese Kelly May 1991

Contemporary Truths Through Creation-Centered Mythology A Visual Through Process, Ann Therese Kelly

Theses

The experience of this year of study is an important aspect in the development of this body of work because it is very much in the present. The pressure of time, limited studio space and intense sharing with other artists (which is a luxury for me) has helped my work to evolve and become strong. I also learned to rely heavily on an intuitive process of thinking and working rather than a left-brained approach to ideas. As a religious person I have often come to crossroads in my career as an artist. I believe I have found a personal style …

Collage And Installations: Between The Sky And The Earth, Misun Hong

Theses

My work comes from my feelings about abortion. It is a difficult situation for all involved. It is a painful decision for a woman to make, one which not only affects her life but also that of a fetus and other people close to her. I wanted to inform others about the chaotic and complicated sadness that abortion brings to one experiencing it. A woman may ask, "Why do I have to make this decision? I have always tried to be a good person. Why me? Why woman? Why not men? Who's fault is this? I feel trapped, but in …

Dreams For Sale, Kathleen S. Fogel Jan 1989

Dreams For Sale, Kathleen S. Fogel

Honors Capstones

The goal of the work of art is the production of a cohesive object that becomes a significant form by succeeding in its development of an ideological thought. The concern chosen dwells in the arena of psychological implications that result from societal beliefs through the medium of printed advertisements. The idea found form in the production of mock billboards and newspapers in a pseudo-collage that further undergo metamorphosis when accumulated and installed in a space. Production included the accumulation of large amounts of source materials from newspapers and billboards which were reorganized so text and images juxtapose each other in …
