This investigation employs a qualitative, case study approach in which the process is guided by two simple, open-ended questions with respect to the primary nonbusiness sponsor of physical activity in Canada: (1) What is the nature of Fitness Canada's marketing functions, and (2) How does Fitness Canada practice a market orientation? Firstly, the predominant marketing practices employed in the conception and delivery of physical activity products for Canadians are studied. The traditional view of strategic management suggests that the performance of the organization is dependent upon the fit between its strategy and the internal and external environment. However, this rational-analytic view neglects the critical question of how organizations learn about their environment and then act on the knowledge/understanding. This dissertation develops a sociocognitive model of strategic management which is rooted in an organization learning paradigm. This is an exploratory study of cross-cultural project negotiations between Canadian consulting engineering firms and Indonesian government agencies. Because cross-cultural negotiations are such a complex phenomenon, three methods--questionnaire, field study, and observation--were used to obtain a more complete picture. Utilizing a random sample of 152 contracts that relate to public issues of debt and preferred shares made by Canadian firms over the period of 1978 to 1987, this thesis provides some empirical evidence on the use of accounting numbers in the contracting process. The results of research investigating the causal link from shopping centre image to shopping centre patronage have been equivocal. This thesis argues that these equivocal results have been caused by a failure to segment the shoppers on the basis of their degree of shopping involvement.;A survey of 2484 self-designated principal household shoppers in London, Ontario (a response rate of 62.2%) was conducted in the spring of 1988 to evaluate the hypothesis that shopping involvement would moderate the relationship of shopping centre image with shopping centre patronage. Organizational buying is a complex decision-making process involving extensive interactions between buying and selling organizations. A two-phased study investigating the role of attitudes and beliefs in the use of personal computers was conducted in 9 organizations. During the first phase a questionnaire was administered to 278 knowledge workers within one organization. The measurement scale items were tested and revised slightly, and the research model tested also. In the second phase, the revised questionnaire was administered to 364 knowledge workers (80% gross response rate) in 8 diverse organizations. There is a widely held, but little tested, supposition that certain characteristics and uses of management accounting and control systems are retarding the adoption of flexible automation technologies such as robots and other computer controlled machines. This thesis describes an empirical study of the relationships between adoption of flexible automation and those aspects of accounting systems most often cited as inhibiting adoption: emphasis on accounting measures in managerial evaluation, length of time horizons of evaluations and capital budgeting criteria, emphasis on financial criteria in justifying capital investments, and inability of accounting systems to capture costs and benefits of automation. This thesis investigates the considerations which enter into employees' absence/attendance choices, in order to develop an empirically inspired, scientific model to help managers understand and influence these choices. This research sought to specify those aspects of the best advices of performance appraisal researchers which were related to the effectiveness of the performance appraisal process. A 150-item questionnaire was sent to 1,200 people who had participated in management development programs (531 responded). With effectiveness operationalized as influencing the motivation of individuals to work, only the practices invloved in setting goals were important, and then in only a modest fashion. Utilizing a random sample of 80 Canadian public companies, this thesis establishes that a significant increase in the number and magnitude of deferred income tax drawdowns occurred in the recessionary period of the early 1980s. The behaviour of deferred income tax expense is then investigated to determine if the observed increase in drawdowns related to a reduction in fixed asset additions or was the result of accounting losses.;The existing literature on deferred income taxes implicitly assumes that drawdowns are the result of involuntary reversals of timing differences that result in a sacrifice of economic resources. In this thesis we compare the translog and differential approaches to estimating a system of equations in the context of estimating trade elasticities. We treat all traded goods as distinct products and make use of production theory to obtain systems of domestic output supply, export supply, import demand and domestic factor usage equations. Both the translog and differential approaches provide equations which are approximations to the true but unknown equations and so there is no guarantee that the elasticity estimates will be the same.
