Towards Explaining Variation In Entrainment, Andreas Weise
Towards Explaining Variation In Entrainment, Andreas Weise
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Entrainment refers to the tendency of human speakers to adapt to their interlocutors to become more similar to them. This affects various dimensions and occurs in many contexts, allowing for rich applications in human-computer interaction. However, it is not exhibited by every speaker in every conversation but varies widely across features, speakers, and contexts, hindering broad application. This variation, whose guiding principles are poorly understood even after decades of entrainment research, is the subject of this thesis. We begin with a comprehensive literature review that serves as the foundation of our own work and provides a reference to guide future …

Reporting verbs are used in academic writing to establish authorial voice when referencing previous research. Although the practice is widespread, inexperienced academic writers and second-language learners may struggle to select appropriate reporting verbs within their given discipline or may overuse them in ways that signal outsider status. The present study explores the distribution of reporting verbs across six disciplines in a corpus containing 270 academic research background sections (introduction and literature review). The results illustrate that disciplines vary widely in the number and type of reporting verbs used. While common reporting verbs across disciplines include argue, examine, report …
Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content, Jason Knudsen
Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content, Jason Knudsen
Physics Capstone Projects
As the Sun ionizes atoms and molecules in the Earth’s ionosphere, the region of atmosphere above approximately 100 km in altitude, the created ionization in this region affects many of the systems that we rely on in daily life. This includes cellular service, GPS navigation, weather forecasting, and credit card data. A good measure for the level of ionization in the ionosphere is total electron content (TEC), which is the number of electrons in a square column above a given geographic location. The TEC over a geographic location influences the propagation of radio waves that traverse that section of the …
Intra- And Interspecific Variation In Tadpole Lateral Line Cells, Sarah Porth, Lisa Surber, Eva Fischer
Intra- And Interspecific Variation In Tadpole Lateral Line Cells, Sarah Porth, Lisa Surber, Eva Fischer
PRECS student projects
Background
- The lateral line is a sensory system that detects motion and pressure in fish & larval amphibians.
- The sensory end organs are called neuromasts.
- A gosner stage describes the 46 stages of tadpole development
Hypothesis: We hypothesize that the number of neuromasts will vary more between species than within a species.
Study On Post Approval Source Change Of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient In The Finished Product And Its Regulatory Requirements In Eu And Us, Kalpana Kamnoore, M. P. Venkatesh, T.M. Pramod Kumar
Study On Post Approval Source Change Of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient In The Finished Product And Its Regulatory Requirements In Eu And Us, Kalpana Kamnoore, M. P. Venkatesh, T.M. Pramod Kumar
The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Post approval changes are changes to any characteristic of pharmaceutical product after approval. Certificate of suitability of European pharmacopoeia (CEP) and drug master file (DMF) are two mechanisms for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) registration. Regulatory requirements vary for each mechanism. This study focused on regulatory requirements for post approval API source change in the European Union (EU) and USA; and to delve on the mechanism of post approval API source changes in the USA and EU. To improve quality of the API, the most of the pharmaceutical industries concentrate on CEP certified source instead of DMF as CEP assures compliance …
Skeletal Ontogeny Of The Plainfin Midshipman, Porichthys Notatus (Percomorphacea: Batrachoidiformes, Diego F. B. Vaz, Eric J. Hilton
Skeletal Ontogeny Of The Plainfin Midshipman, Porichthys Notatus (Percomorphacea: Batrachoidiformes, Diego F. B. Vaz, Eric J. Hilton
VIMS Articles
Batrachoidiformes are benthic fishes that utilize the undersides of rocks as spawn- ing nests. Their larvae are attached to the nest and nourished by a large yolk sac. The evolutionary shift from feeding, free-swimming larvae to sedentary larvae that are reliant on their yolk sac for nutrition can lead to changes in skeletal develop- ment. Batrachoidiformes also have many morphological specializations, such as five pectoral-fin radials (versus four in other acanthomorphs) that are of uncertain homol- ogy, the determination of which may have phylogenetic implications. A larval series of Porichthys notatus was collected and its skeletal ontogeny is described. In …
Mechanisms Of Nourishment, Raymond Lloyd Brown Iii
Mechanisms Of Nourishment, Raymond Lloyd Brown Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This written thesis is a description and analysis of the ceramic work of Ray Brown. Included in this thesis is an explanation and defense of my work in my exhibition Mechanisms of Nourishment. It also unpacks the conceptual, technical, and formal aspects of the work.
The research explored in this written thesis discusses the relationship between the aesthetic and utilitarian components of pottery. From an analytical, iterative approach to form, I strive to isolate proportions that evoke a sense of volume and repetition. My references to Mid Century Modern and Streamlining Era design guide my efforts into dynamic mechanisms of …
Evaluation Of Cone And Seed Quality Of Siberian Stone Pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) For Plus-Tree Selection, Svetlana Velisevich, Alexander Popov
Evaluation Of Cone And Seed Quality Of Siberian Stone Pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) For Plus-Tree Selection, Svetlana Velisevich, Alexander Popov
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is a cone-bearing species with outstanding nutritious seeds, health-supporting properties, and nut oil. Currently, the main volume of pine nuts is harvested in natural forests, which causes damage to ecosystems. The best solution to this problem would be harvesting nuts on special pine nut plantations established on the basis of high-seeding clones. However, it is hampered by the low efficiency of the existing methods for assessing plus-tree productivity. This work focused on cone analysis in two sites used for plus-tree selection: a 42-year-old sparse forest plantation and a 186-224-year-old closed natural forest. The …
