The Forgotten Subject: Pe And The Power Of People, Shea Franklin May 2024

The Forgotten Subject: Pe And The Power Of People, Shea Franklin

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project focused on student engagement in PE at the middle school level. Student engagement is so meaningful because even though physical education is supposed to educate kids to be physically active while being active in practice, quite the opposite is happening. Middle school is the point at which students begin to lose interest in PE, viewing it as repetitive and pointless, which is why it is so essential to make this forgotten subject fun again. After survey and interviewing students and staff members participating in physical education at a local middle school in Marina, three themes emerged from the …

Morphological And Rapd Variations And Regenerants Derived From Cell Suspension Culture Of Pangolagrass, C S. Chen, S M. Wang, Y K. Cheng

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Pangolagrass cv. A254, a sterile strain, is one of Taiwan's major forage sources but recently has faced serious disease problems. Tissue culture was expected to generate variations in the breeding program of pangolagrass. The purpose of this study is to examine the somaclonal variation of regenerated plants by means of phenotypic characters survey and RAPD analysis. After long-term suspension culture and EMS mutagenesis, many regenerated plants with morphological variations have been found. Among the regenerants, 10 clones with obviously different characteristics were selected for further studies. Nine of them showed significant differences in morphological trains as compared to A254. By …

Regional Commercial Bank Lending To Small Businesses In The Wake Of The Great Recession, Boris D. Higgins Jan 2024

Regional Commercial Bank Lending To Small Businesses In The Wake Of The Great Recession, Boris D. Higgins

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

The purpose of this paper is to document and explain the state by state variation in commercial bank lending to small businesses during the Great Recession. To accomplish this purpose will require several steps. These steps include showing the evidence of the variation in lending across states, the theoretical causes and the empirical findings of a capital supply gap based on market imperfections and employing OLS estimation method on carefully selected economic variables. The empirical results indicate that economic conditions, borrower characteristics and lender characteristics influence lending variation where these results can help in policy formulation.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Due to the influence of different cultural contexts, the process of foreign terms entering the Chinese context is often accompanied by “variation”. The semantic evolution of “inspiration” in the translation process serves as a typical example. The Japanese transliteration of romaji (innsubiresyo) follows the translation of ancient Greek-Latin languages. While Liang Qichao's Chinese transliteration of the word implies a potential contradiction between “availability to all” and “unique genius”, it allows for a broad scope of reinterpretation within the Chinese context. The translation as Linggan gradually establishes a connection and transformation with categories such as “sensation” in traditional Chinese culture, while …

Perceptions Of "Southern" In Utah English, Chad M. Huckvale Aug 2023

Perceptions Of "Southern" In Utah English, Chad M. Huckvale

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, two experiments are conducted to study language regard of Utah English. Experiment 1 is a draw-a-map study wherein participants were asked to mark areas on a map to of Utah where people speak differently (Preston 1989; Bucholtz et al. 2007). Experiment 2 uses a new research method, referred to here as a "perceptual audio survey". With this method, participants are asked to listen to recordings of native English speakers and identify where in Utah the speaker is likely from (Preston 1996:320-328; Cramer & Montgomery 2016:11). Crucially though, the speakers used in this experiment were from throughout the …

Species Richness Affects Grassland Yield And Yield Stability Across Seasons, Sites And Years, David J. Barker, Reuben M. Sulc, M. R. Burgess, T. L. Bultemeier Mar 2023

Species Richness Affects Grassland Yield And Yield Stability Across Seasons, Sites And Years, David J. Barker, Reuben M. Sulc, M. R. Burgess, T. L. Bultemeier

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The benefits of biodiversity (specifically species richness) are proposed to include both greater yield and greater stability of yield in a variable environment (Sanderson et al., 2004). Experimental evidence showing yield benefits is inconsistent (White et al., 2004). There is relatively little experimental data showing the effects of species richness on yield stability. The objective of this study was to measure the yield from mixtures with up to 12 species, and to measure the variability of yield between 2 sites, between spring and summer, and in 2 successive years.

Quantifying Variation In High-Quality Footwear Replicate Impressions, Samantha K. Brady Jan 2023

Quantifying Variation In High-Quality Footwear Replicate Impressions, Samantha K. Brady

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A footwear impression collected at a crime scene can provide information about the shoe that created it, yielding investigative leads, excluding persons-of-interest, and linking evidence between cases. The analysis of footwear evidence often requires the preparation of test impressions from known exemplar shoes created under controlled laboratory conditions for comparison to questioned impressions. The goal of these comparisons is to evaluate the degree of similarities and differences between the questioned impression and potential sources.

Given that this comparison leads to an assessment of the nature and degree of agreement between questioned and known impressions, it is important to characterize the …

WWU Graduate School Collection

Pinto abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) is the only abalone species found in the Salish Sea in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. They were recently declared as a State endangered species and human intervention is necessary to recover the species. Puget Sound Restoration Fund (PSRF) is one of the organizations trying to restore pinto abalone populations in the Salish Sea. Some of their outplant sites are less successful than others although they are physically similar. Currently, there is no research on how environmental variation affects juvenile pinto abalone survival, growth, and metabolic rate.

The goal of my thesis was to simulate …

Geographic Dynamics Of Multifamily Capitalization Rates: A Comprehensive Study Of Variation And Determinants, Zachary Torrey Jan 2023

Geographic Dynamics Of Multifamily Capitalization Rates: A Comprehensive Study Of Variation And Determinants, Zachary Torrey

CMC Senior Theses

Capitalization Rates are a dynamic measurement utilized in real estate to assess investment opportunities. The cap rate is the best apples-to-apples comparison metric available to investors to compare and prioritize investments. As such, there is a large emphasis in the real estate field on understanding the best predictive indicators of cap rate variation across geographies. In this analysis, I focus on multifamily cap rates and examine what are the best predictive indicators that explain the level of the cap rate across geographies over time. In doing so, I identify three novel variables that influence the cap rate as well as …

Towards Explaining Variation In Entrainment, Andreas Weise Sep 2022

Towards Explaining Variation In Entrainment, Andreas Weise

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Entrainment refers to the tendency of human speakers to adapt to their interlocutors to become more similar to them. This affects various dimensions and occurs in many contexts, allowing for rich applications in human-computer interaction. However, it is not exhibited by every speaker in every conversation but varies widely across features, speakers, and contexts, hindering broad application. This variation, whose guiding principles are poorly understood even after decades of entrainment research, is the subject of this thesis. We begin with a comprehensive literature review that serves as the foundation of our own work and provides a reference to guide future …

Reporting Verb Variation Across Disciplines: An Academic Corpus Study, Grant Eckstein, Jacob D. Rawlins, Hannah Taylor, Haley Briggs, Andrea Candland, Elizabeth Hanks, Sarah Hill

Faculty Publications

Reporting verbs are used in academic writing to establish authorial voice when referencing previous research. Although the practice is widespread, inexperienced academic writers and second-language learners may struggle to select appropriate reporting verbs within their given discipline or may overuse them in ways that signal outsider status. The present study explores the distribution of reporting verbs across six disciplines in a corpus containing 270 academic research background sections (introduction and literature review). The results illustrate that disciplines vary widely in the number and type of reporting verbs used. While common reporting verbs across disciplines include argue, examine, report …

Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content, Jason Knudsen May 2022

Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content, Jason Knudsen

Physics Capstone Projects

As the Sun ionizes atoms and molecules in the Earth’s ionosphere, the region of atmosphere above approximately 100 km in altitude, the created ionization in this region affects many of the systems that we rely on in daily life. This includes cellular service, GPS navigation, weather forecasting, and credit card data. A good measure for the level of ionization in the ionosphere is total electron content (TEC), which is the number of electrons in a square column above a given geographic location. The TEC over a geographic location influences the propagation of radio waves that traverse that section of the …

Evaluation Of Cone And Seed Quality Of Siberian Stone Pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) For Plus-Tree Selection, Svetlana Velisevich, Alexander Popov Jan 2022

Evaluation Of Cone And Seed Quality Of Siberian Stone Pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) For Plus-Tree Selection, Svetlana Velisevich, Alexander Popov

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is a cone-bearing species with outstanding nutritious seeds, health-supporting properties, and nut oil. Currently, the main volume of pine nuts is harvested in natural forests, which causes damage to ecosystems. The best solution to this problem would be harvesting nuts on special pine nut plantations established on the basis of high-seeding clones. However, it is hampered by the low efficiency of the existing methods for assessing plus-tree productivity. This work focused on cone analysis in two sites used for plus-tree selection: a 42-year-old sparse forest plantation and a 186-224-year-old closed natural forest. The …

Skeletal Ontogeny Of The Plainfin Midshipman, Porichthys Notatus (Percomorphacea: Batrachoidiformes, Diego F. B. Vaz, Eric J. Hilton

VIMS Articles

Batrachoidiformes are benthic fishes that utilize the undersides of rocks as spawn- ing nests. Their larvae are attached to the nest and nourished by a large yolk sac. The evolutionary shift from feeding, free-swimming larvae to sedentary larvae that are reliant on their yolk sac for nutrition can lead to changes in skeletal develop- ment. Batrachoidiformes also have many morphological specializations, such as five pectoral-fin radials (versus four in other acanthomorphs) that are of uncertain homol- ogy, the determination of which may have phylogenetic implications. A larval series of Porichthys notatus was collected and its skeletal ontogeny is described. In …

Does Public Health Policy Matter?: Explaining Variation In Covid-19 Outcomes Across The 50 States, Charlotte Cheng, Richard L. Fox

Honors Thesis

The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted debate about what factors cause wide variations in mortality and infection rates across the United States and raised questions about what can be done to limit the spread of future outbreaks. In the comparative international politics literature, there are four explanations that determine how well a country can contain outbreaks: leadership, state capacity, demographics, and state culture. Currently, there are no studies that show a comprehensive evaluation of what has caused variations in mortality rate among the fifty states. This study aims to examine state variation among the 50 states in the U.S. and its …

Tonal Variation In An Agricultural Field In Greene County, Ohio, Kenan Estes May 2021

Tonal Variation In An Agricultural Field In Greene County, Ohio, Kenan Estes

Scholars Symposium

This project examined the tonal differences in an agricultural field in Cedarville, Ohio to determine what environmental or historical factors contributed to the distinct light and dark patches when observed using aerial imagery. Historical photos going back as far as 1948 consistently show these tonal differences. Lidar data was gathered and turned into a topographic map which closely corresponded to the tonal patterns. Soil samples taken from six locations to a depth of three feet indicated that the topsoil color closely matches the light and dark colors seen from the air. These samples also match the soil color and composition …

Deadly Dynamics: Studies Of An Invasive Parasite Of Waterfowl, Chiedu Okonmah, Rebecca Z. Bachtel, Jennifer A.H. Koop

Honors Capstones

There are many knowns and unknowns about invasive species and their patterns. The purpose of this research is to investigate variation in invasion history between invasive trematodes, snails, and waterfowl. To do this, snails (Bithynia tentaculata) were crushed and analyzed under a microscope to find metacercariae (Cyathocotyle bushiensis and Sphaeridiotrema spp.), which are the parasites that infect the host. They were counted and added to data showing prevalence, abundance, and intensity. Data from 2018, 2019, and 2020 were compared to each other to check for annual variation in prevalence, abundance, and intensity between the years. Even though the data for …

La Variación Sociofonológica De /Tʃ/ En Chihuahua, México, Latasha L. Valenzuela-Hernandez

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis shows us the phonological variation of the pronunciation of [tʃ] in the vernacular Spanish of Chihuahua, Mexico, which variably converts into a different pronunciation, the variant [ʃ], through the process of lenition. Although this phenomenon is observed in various countries such as Spain, Panama, Venezuela, and the United States, it remained understudied in the sociolinguistic field until now. Therefore, this investigation contributes reliable information of the psycholinguistic, phonological, and geo-linguistic characteristics that are pertinent to the production of the fricative [ʃ]. The investigation’s methodology employs semi-directed interviews with a socially stratified corpus of thirty-two speakers from Chihuahua, Mexico. …

Motivic Metamorphosis: Modelling Intervallic Transformations In Schoenberg’S Early Works, Adam Roy Feb 2021

Motivic Metamorphosis: Modelling Intervallic Transformations In Schoenberg’S Early Works, Adam Roy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Composers can manipulate a basic musical idea in theoretically infinite ways. This concept of manipulating musical material was a central compositional philosophy of Arnold Schoenberg (1874 – 1951). As Schoenberg states, “whatever happens in a piece of music is nothing but the endless reshaping of a basic shape” (Schoenberg, [1935] 1975). It is the variety of ways in which these basic ideas, commonly termed motives, are manipulated that contributes to a work’s unique identity. According to Schoenberg, these varied basic shapes work dialogically to unify a musical piece. But how are these basic shapes varied?

Utilizing ordered intervals of pitch …
