The Purpose Of Putting On A Backpack, Amanda Conover Jan 2022

The Purpose Of Putting On A Backpack, Amanda Conover

The Peregrine Review

If you ever have the opportunity, invite all of your friends backpacking. In my experience, thirteen came. We hiked in the dark as the moonlight led. We had a place to sleep but slept somewhere else instead. We all packed food and ended up sharing it all. We had a bonfire on the top of a mountain, with the stars winking at us from above.

January Medicine - A Sonnet, Courtney Kehler

The Peregrine Review

The early morning sun is gentle on

the trees, its light drifting through branches made

silhouettes in the delayed winter dawn,

keeping snow-dusted streets in frozen shade.

Conversations, Adam Carter

The Peregrine Review

Conversations are going extinct.

Now I’m not saying we don’t talk anymore, because we certainly do.

But do we really listen?

Unrequited Illness (Uri), Chanty Webb Jan 2022

Unrequited Illness (Uri), Chanty Webb

The Peregrine Review

I never thought I'd be saying this but...

I miss you.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder;

your absence has shown me

that I had a good thing all along.

I'm sorry I complained about you being an inconvenience,

I was wrong for cursing you season after season.

What Works To Improve Outcomes For Kenya’S Adolescent Girls?, Population Council Jan 2022

What Works To Improve Outcomes For Kenya’S Adolescent Girls?, Population Council

Adolescents and Young People

The Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya is a study that evaluates the long-term impact of a multi-sectoral intervention targeted at adolescent girls aged 11 to 15 years from Kibera and rural Wajir. The intervention consisted of four different components: a community-based violence prevention program, an education conditional cash transfer (CCT), health-focused girls' empowerment clubs, and wealth creation for girls via financial education and savings activities. This brief looks at the impact of the two-year program in Wajir County four years after it ended.

Evaluating The English-Turkish Parallel Treebank For Machine Translation, Onur Görgün, Olcay Taner Yildiz Jan 2022

Evaluating The English-Turkish Parallel Treebank For Machine Translation, Onur Görgün, Olcay Taner Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study extends our initial efforts in building an English-Turkish parallel treebank corpus for statistical machine translation tasks. We manually generated parallel trees for about 17K sentences selected from the Penn Treebank corpus. English sentences vary in length: 15 to 50 tokens including punctuation. We constrained the translation of trees by (i) reordering of leaf nodes based on suffixation rules in Turkish, and (ii) gloss replacement. We aim to mimic human annotator?s behavior in real translation task. In order to fill the morphological and syntactic gap between languages, we do morphological annotation and disambiguation. We also apply our heuristics by …

Behavioral Tactics To Support Providers In Offering Quality Care: Insights From Provider Behavior Change Research And Practice, Emily Zimmerman, Jana Smith

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

This document offers a synthesis of insights from recent research and design activities conducted by ideas42 through Breakthrough RESEARCH, Breakthrough ACTION, and other projects across nine different low- and middle-income settings about the behavioral roots of challenges health care providers face in providing high quality services. We discuss how the physical and social environment in which they work and live sends signals to providers about what is important, how they can navigate difficulties, and how well they are performing. We discuss how experiences outside the health facility impact how providers approach their professional duties. We also discuss how pervasive time …

Community Directed Approaches To Promote Uptake Of Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine For Intermittent Preventive Treatment Of Malaria In Pregnancy: Baseline Findings From Kisumu And Migori Counties, Dennis Matanda, Wilson Liambila, Beth Kangwana Jan 2022

Community Directed Approaches To Promote Uptake Of Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine For Intermittent Preventive Treatment Of Malaria In Pregnancy: Baseline Findings From Kisumu And Migori Counties, Dennis Matanda, Wilson Liambila, Beth Kangwana

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

During pregnancy, malaria has a devastating impact on health outcomes for mothers and infants. Uptake of Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine (SP) for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy (IPTp) is a safe and clinically proven medical intervention for the prevention of malaria in pregnancy (MiP). Despite Kenya’s adoption of this intervention in its national policies and guidelines, uptake of IPTp for MiP has been persistently low. To realize effective coverage of IPTp, the Population Council, Kenya in collaboration with Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) and County Governments, is implementing the Revive IPTp project in Kisumu and Migori counties. The project seeks …

The Unstoppable Spread Of English In The Global University, Rosemary C. Salomone

Faculty Publications

As English has spread across higher education worldwide, it has generated ongoing debate and a wealth of scholarship raising academic and national concerns, but with little, if any, pause or retreat on policies and practices. This article examines that puzzling disconnect within the broader framework of the rise of English as the dominant lingua franca, its historical grounding, its social and economic implications, and its diverse course within Europe and postcolonial countries.

Reading With Joysticks: Video Games In The English Language Arts Classroom, Wesley Wingert Jan 2022

Reading With Joysticks: Video Games In The English Language Arts Classroom, Wesley Wingert

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This paper examines the new literary format of video games and argues that video games can be studied as their own text in the English Language Arts classroom through the lenses of film theory, narratology, and ludology. In order to be precise, the paper offers explicit connections to each of the reading and writing standards supplied by the Common Core State Standards. The paper then suggests that video games as literature can offer opportunities and skills beyond what traditional literature can, including problem solving and communication skills. Next, the paper lays out a framework to be used in order to …
