Public Financing Of Elections In The States, Nicholas Meixsell
Public Financing Of Elections In The States, Nicholas Meixsell
Honors Theses
In the US, there is a history of the courts striking down campaign finance reform measures as unconstitutional. As such, there are few avenues remaining for someone who is interested in 'clean government' reforms. One such avenue is publicly financed elections, where the state actually provides funding for campaigns. These systems can be quite varied in the restrictions and contingencies they attach to the money, and for examples one has to look no further than the states There are many states that have some form of public financing for elections, and by looking at the different states' systems we are …

The New Role Of Corporate Social Responsibility In The Digital Age, Isaac Grebisz
The New Role Of Corporate Social Responsibility In The Digital Age, Isaac Grebisz
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
In 2018, Nike, Inc. and Colin Kaepernick released the ad “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Within hours, the ad went viral, angering some while drawing praise from many others. This act marked an inflection point in the conventional wisdom of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Historically, firms steered away from engaging in highly controversial political issues. However, today, as political leadership declines and polarization plagues the government, corporations must change how they behave. Three influencing factors to this new corporate behavior are: 1) the increased value and fragility of a firm's reputation, 2) the increased availability of …

Oil Politics And Land Tenure Changes In Uganda: Understanding The Curse Of Dispossession In The Albertine Region, Niringiyimana Julius, Muhumuza William, Murindwa Rutanga
African Social Science Review
Although oil wealth has been applauded for being a sine qua non for development because of its profitability, its lucrativeness to global capitalism has empowered global powers and increased marginalization and poverty in the Oil Village Communities (OVCs) of developing countries. The thrust of this study was to analyze different ways oil politics influences land tenure changes and alienation of local citizens’ land rights through the process of land dispossession in Uganda’s Albertine region. Anchored within accumulation by dispossession discourse, the study used qualitative approach and employed in-depth interviews, focused group discussions, observations and documentary reviews as data collection instruments. …
Understanding The Origins Of Political Duopoly In Ghana’S Fourth Republic Democracy, Kingsley S. Agomor
Understanding The Origins Of Political Duopoly In Ghana’S Fourth Republic Democracy, Kingsley S. Agomor
African Social Science Review
The paper examines political party formation and fragmentation in Ghana. A multi-theory approach was used to explain the political party formation and fragmentations and why Ghana’s party politics in the Fourth Republic is being dominated by the de facto two-party system. The study adopts a content analysis approach and depends mainly on desk reviews of literature. Ghana’s experience shows that the evolution of political parties began with the formation of nationalist movements whose prime objective was to resist specific instances of colonial racism and exploitation. The fragmentation of political parties during the pre-independence era was because the parties held different …

Testing Tocqueville: The Political Theory Of The “Mayflower Compact” And Its Legacy, Vanessa Sherman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The question of religion’s place in American political thought and practice continues to be a divisive issue. Critics of religion’s importance (Pangle 1988; Zuckert 1996) point to the centrality of natural rights liberal thought in The Declaration of Independence while proponents of religion’s importance frequently employ Alexis de Tocqueville’s account of religion in America in support of their arguments (see Allen 1998; Kessler 1992; and Tessitore 2002). In Democracy in America, Tocqueville (2000, 35) identifies the date of America’s founding as 1620 and, in doing so, argues that “there is not one opinion, one habit, one law, I could say …

Charisma's Triumph Over Organization: Peronism Throughout The Decades, Alyssa Dipadova
Charisma's Triumph Over Organization: Peronism Throughout The Decades, Alyssa Dipadova
Student Symposium
“A party’s organization characteristics depend more upon its history, i.e. on how the organization orientated and how it consolidated…[e]very organization bears the mark of its formation, of the crucial political-administrative decision made by its founders, the decision which ‘molded’ the organization." The validity (or maybe the potency/breadth) of this idea when applied to Peronism is the main topic for this paper. The importance of this topic cannot be understated as the Partido Justicialista (PJ), the largest component of the Peronist movement, continues to be one of the most prevalent parties in Argentina’s two-party system--the other being the UCR. How did …

Gwu’S Dr. Casey Delehanty Co-Authors Study On Prevalence Of Torture In U.S. Movies, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Since America was attacked by terrorists on 9/11, the use of torture for counterterrorism tactics has become a highly-debated issue. Approximately half of adults in the United States believe torture is effective in stopping a terrorist threat, said Dr. Casey Delehanty, assistant professor of political science at Gardner-Webb University. However, many interrogation professionals disagree and maintain that torture is often counterproductive.

Refuge In A Place Without Refugees, Jane Roarty
Refuge In A Place Without Refugees, Jane Roarty
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The question of who should be given legal status as a refugee has consistently been veiled in discussions of ‘practicality,’ political motives, and inaction. Centered in these discussions tend to be state officials, international organization officials, and academics. More importantly, typically excluded from this assembly of decision makers and the thinkers are those actually and personally affected by the specifics of the term. In Jordan, this discussion is particularly interesting because the government does not legally recognize refugees since the United Nations refused to recognize Palestinians under the 1951 Convention definition. This paper aims to unpack the term refugee: both …
