Influence Of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (Pcms) On The Chloride Ion Diffusivity Of Concretes Exposed To Freeze-Thaw Cycles: Insights From Multiscale Numerical Simulations, Sumeru Nayak, Gideon A. Lyngdoh, Sumanta Das Jan 2019

Lyngdoh, Sumanta Das

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Use of phase change materials (PCMs) to tailor the thermal performance of concretes by efficient energy storage and transmission has gained traction in recent years. This study incorporates microencapsulated PCMs as sand-replacement in concrete bridge decks and performs numerical simulation involving multiple interactive length scales to elucidate the influence of PCM-incorporation in concretes subjected to combined freeze-thaw and chloride ingress-induced deterioration. The simulations show significant increase in durability against combined freeze-thaw and chloride ingress-induced deterioration in concretes when microencapsulated PCMs are incorporated. In addition, a reliability-based probabilistic analysis shows significant increase in life expectancy of bridge decks with PCM-incorporation. The …

Short Beam Shear Strength Evaluations Of Gfrp Composites: Correlations Through Accelerated And Natural Aging, William Todd Barker Jan 2019

Short Beam Shear Strength Evaluations Of Gfrp Composites: Correlations Through Accelerated And Natural Aging, William Todd Barker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) composites have been materials of interest in replacing or reinforcing steel, wood, and concrete, but lack of understanding of degradation under physical and chemical aging is a main concern. Through many years of research, the understanding of aging or durability of GFRPs has improved. To be able to evaluate aging related degradation rates, an accelerated aging methodology under varying environments is introduced. Accelerated aging is a concept used to age composites in a lab controlled environment under varying pH conditions (2 to 13) and temperatures (~ -20° to +160°F). Once acceleratedly aged testing is completed, Arrhenius …

Development Of Various Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composites, Emad Amjad Booya Jan 2019

Development Of Various Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composites, Emad Amjad Booya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results obtained through a comprehensive experimental work that was carried out in two different phases. Phase I determined the mechanical and durability performance of cementitious composites reinforced Kraft pulp fibres. Two engineered fibers, along with a commercially available unmodified fiber, were used in reinforcing cementitious materials. These fibres are called mechanically modified fibre and chemically treated fibre, and these are not yet commercially available. This study was completed to determine the strength, durability, and interfacial properties of the reinforced cementitious composites. Test results showed an increase in the permeability characteristics for the reinforced concretes. Hence, these …

Properties Of Glass Aggregate Mortars, Kayle Karla Mei Mamitag Gorospe Jan 2019

Properties Of Glass Aggregate Mortars, Kayle Karla Mei Mamitag Gorospe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Glass as aggregates in cement mortars not only improves the sustainability of the material, but also promotes waste management. In addition, the inclusion of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) further enhances material properties and sustainability. The mechanical performance of glass aggregate mortars was evaluated by means of compressive strength, whereas durability was assessed through alkali silica reaction, water immersion absorption and sorptivity, chloride ion permeations, and plastic and drying shrinkage. Investigations into the thermal properties of glass aggregate mortars were also completed. Glass aggregates were found to reduce compressive strength; however, binary and ternary blends of SCMs can offset the reduction …

Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar Jan 2019

Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar

Masters Theses

“Over the past 60 years, pumping concrete has gained popularity due to the economic and technical benefits that typically accompanies it. However, boom configuration and flow rate can adversely affect freeze-thaw and scaling resistance of concrete due to the effects of pressure on the air-void system. Therefore, the objective of this research is to assess the influence of different pumping parameters on the durability of hardened self-consolidating concrete. Self-consolidating, flowable, and conventional concrete mixtures were tested during large scale pumping experiments positioning the pump boom in an “A” and a flat shape as well as using different pumping speeds. In …

Rumble Stripes And Pavement Marking Delineation, Steven Zehr, Brandon Hardin, Hillary Lowther, Dana Plattner, Timothy Wells, Ayman Habib, Darcy M. Bullock Jan 2019

Rumble Stripes And Pavement Marking Delineation, Steven Zehr, Brandon Hardin, Hillary Lowther, Dana Plattner, Timothy Wells, Ayman Habib, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Pavement markings serve an important role on the highway and must be visible in day, night, and wet conditions. Pavement markings placed in grooved pavement are receiving considerable interest due to their potential for greater durability by providing protection from plow blades used during winter maintenance. Raised pavement markers (RPMs) are also used for roadway delineation, and the failure rate of RPMs in and in between rumble depressions is also of interest. This study evaluated white edge lines and yellow edge lines on roads in Indiana and other northern states, as well as RPMs in and in between rumble depressions. …
