The Chakra System As A Framework For Holistic Educational Development, Michele Dipietro Jan 2018

The Chakra System As A Framework For Holistic Educational Development, Michele Dipietro

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

As my interests and job duties have shifted toward holistic educational development beyond teaching support, I have sought a conceptual framework to organize my efforts. Joining my identities of educational developer and yogi, I have adapted the chakra system from yoga philosophy. The One Thing in my personal life has become The One Thing in my professional life too, informing programming and pointing out voids to fill. This essay reviews the classic articulation of the chakra system in the seven major chakras and offers examples of how the chakras can illuminate our institutional work, both individually and as an integrated …

Retinoic Acid Receptor Isoform-Specific Control Of Mouse Salivary Gland Development And Regeneration, Kara Desantis Jan 2018

Retinoic Acid Receptor Isoform-Specific Control Of Mouse Salivary Gland Development And Regeneration, Kara Desantis

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Controlled expansion and differentiation of progenitor cell populations is essential for organogenesis followed by continued maintenance of the population into and through adulthood. As the K5+ basal cell population is regulated by retinoic acid signaling, we interrogated the contribution of specific RAR isoforms to the regulation of these cells during submandibular salivary gland (SMG) organogenesis and regeneration. Retinoic acid has previously been shown to be involved in the development of the salivary gland, and recently, lack of retinoid signaling has been shown to impact the K5+ population of basal progenitor cells. Since retinoic acid is known to exert stimulatory effects …

Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek Jan 2018

Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation contributes empirical analysis on the dynamics of security sector reform and aims to establish an understanding of the interplay between civilian governments, security forces and international actors in attempts to reform the security sectors of transitioning or reconstructing states. The need for reform programs aimed at boosting civilian control over state security forces has gained increased attention following the end of the Cold War, especially for states during regime transitions or post-conflict reconstruction. The record of success for these programs however remains inconsistent, and empirical scholarship aimed at the process at the time of writing is problematically sparse.

Developing Toward Generality: Combating Catastrophic Forgetting With Developmental Compression, Shawn L. Beaulieu Jan 2018

Developing Toward Generality: Combating Catastrophic Forgetting With Developmental Compression, Shawn L. Beaulieu

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

General intelligence is the exhibition of intelligent behavior across multiple problems in a variety of settings, however intelligence is defined and measured.

Endemic in approaches to realize such intelligence in machines is catastrophic forgetting, in which sequential learning corrupts knowledge obtained earlier in the sequence or in which tasks antagonistically compete for system resources. Methods for obviating catastrophic forgetting have either sought to identify and preserve features of the system necessary to solve one problem when learning to solve another, or enforce modularity such that minimally overlapping sub-functions contain task-specific knowledge. While successful in some domains, both approaches scale poorly …

Disc1 Knockout Rats Reveal Sexually Dimorphic Patterns Of Impairment Across Development, Stephanie S. Desrochers Jan 2018

Disc1 Knockout Rats Reveal Sexually Dimorphic Patterns Of Impairment Across Development, Stephanie S. Desrochers

Honors Theses

Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder characterized by three symptom categories: positive (hallucinations, delusions), negative (anhedonia, anxiety), and cognitive (sensory processing and memory deficits). We worked with a biallelic deletion of the Disrupted-in-schizophrenia-1 (DISC1) gene in Sprague-Dawley rats to facilitate our understanding of the biological bases of schizophrenia. Mutations of DISC1 are associated with a higher prevalence of schizophrenia. Adult DISC1 knockout, compared to wildtype, rats display features of schizophrenia-like outcomes in rodent models. The present study investigated the progression of the cognitive symptom deficits in prepulse inhibition (PPI), assessing animals at postnatal days 17 (pre-weaning), 26 (post-weaning), 39 (adolescent), and …

Effect Of Resveratrol On The Development Of Eczema, Christopher Carlucci Jan 2018

Effect Of Resveratrol On The Development Of Eczema, Christopher Carlucci

Theses and Dissertations

Atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema characterized by chronic inflammation of the skin, affecting millions of people worldwide. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring stilbenoid, is widely believed to exhibit beneficial effects on a host of chronic diseases. Although some previous studies have aimed to evaluate the effects of resveratrol on the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, this relationship remains ill-defined. We have previously established that mast cell activation, remodeling, and cellular infiltration in the hypodermis all begin prior to the IgE-mediated immune response in an atopic dermatitis mouse model, and that this early pathogenesis is directly related to an increase in …

Development Of A High-Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Libs Spectrometer, Kevin A. Dudley Jan 2018

Development Of A High-Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Libs Spectrometer, Kevin A. Dudley

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic emission technique that uses a pulse laser to ablate a sample and form a plasma. Atomic emissions from the plasma provide unique elemental characteristics regarding the composition of the sample. The technique produces valuable qualitative results, but the accuracy of quantitative analyses is hindered by spectral line broadening mechanisms and laser pulse reproducibility, among other factors. The Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer (SHS) is a high-resolution spectrometer with very high light throughput, and its use to LIBS is currently limited to two peer-reviewed publications. In the following work a high resolution SHS is developed and …
