Gender Roles And Gender Stereotypes In Four Newbery Award-Winning Books, Alex Paige Brower
SLIS Connecting
As gender equality has become a more prominent issue and men and women have become more equal, one would expect this change to be reflected in children’s literature. This study examines four Newbery-Award winning books to determine if this change is apparent.

Framing The President: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Participatory Quests, And The Rhetoric Of Possibility In World War Ii Propaganda, James Kimble Ph.D.
Speaker & Gavel
This essay examines The Life of Franklin D. Roosevelt, a comic book distributed internationally by the Office of War Information (OWI) in late 1942, as a creative form of international propaganda. Drawing from existing research in comic scholarship, narrative theory, and visual inquiry, this case study suggests that OWI’s booklet represented a fusion of verbal and visual appeals, which together worked to produce a potent depiction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s character traits and exceptionality. The analysis concludes that this depiction ultimately presented the president as the protagonist of a romantic quest narrative, one that actively invited foreign readers to …

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz
You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz
Rachael Muszkiewicz
In response to literature on libraries as space and the Millennial generation, this chapter speaks to the importance of the academic library as both social and communal space and how to communicate with today’s college students. These case studies illustrate that students can be reached through analog displays, building an unconscious community between students as a group and students with the library. Community built within the academic library is discussed in light of these analog displays, the current library literature and via sociological positions. It is concluded that although it is thought that students want digital or online communication only, …

Can The Burning Of Holy Books Ever Be Justified?, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
Can The Burning Of Holy Books Ever Be Justified?, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
While exploring the historical context of the burning of books during the times of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of unified China, the European Dark Ages, the colonial era, the Nazi Germany era, Iranian triumphs, and contemporary instances of the burning of literature, comics, and history, philosophy, and religious books, this paper identifies “freedom of expression” as the underlyingprinciple for the burning of holy books, an action that eventually fuels religious hatred, public disorder, and violence in society. Notwithstanding such consequences, Pastor Terry Jonesannounced an event calling for the burning of the Holy Qur’an onthe ninth anniversary of the 9/11 …

College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Health literacy, the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand health information and services needed to make health decisions, is an essential element for early adults (aged 18-44 years) to make informed decisions about cancer. Low health literacy is one of the social determinants of health associated with cancer-related disparities. Over the past several years, a nonprofit organization, a university, and a cancer center in a major urban environment have developed and implemented health literacy programs within healthcare systems and in the community. Health system personnel received extensive health literacy training to reduce medical jargon …

Bridging Transpersonal Ecosophical Concerns With The Hero’S Journey And Superheroes Through Comicbook Lore: Implications For Personal And Cultural Transformation, Mark A. Schroll, Claire Polansky
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper explores how mythical figures and comicbook superheroes can 1) inspire personal growth, social and planetary change, and 2) explicate aspects of the deep ecology movement and transpersonal ecosophy that invite further academic inquiry while at the same time 3) speak to concerns that ignite the interests of popular culture and personal mythology. Likewise the ecopsychological significance of modern fictional characters in comicbooks, graphic novels, and films will be examined. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides a theoretical examination of how definitions of the terms myth and hero and hero’s journey are framed, and their implications …

Two Departments, Two Models Of Interdisciplinary Peer Learning, Julianne A. Wenner, Paul J. Simmonds
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
On graduation, teacher candidates (TCs) are typically underprepared to teach science, particularly physical science, whereas physics graduates frequently lack training in teaching or effective communication. In response, we created two models for interdisciplinary peer learning where TCs were paired with either graduate or undergraduate physics students. In both models, physics students teach TCs content knowledge relevant to a given area of either classical or quantum physics, which TCs then use to design and implement a short lesson for K-5 students. Overall, both models were successful, with the two sets of students reporting benefits in each case. Affordances for TCs included …

The Conflict Of Progressive And Conservative Tendencies In The Film Work Of Steranko, James H. Romberger
The Conflict Of Progressive And Conservative Tendencies In The Film Work Of Steranko, James H. Romberger
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis analyzes the work of narrative artist James Steranko on three finished films: the short AFI film Shadow House, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It demonstrates how Steranko's efforts on all of these projects are consistent with the overriding concerns of his art, yet it also examines his conflicting impulses, on the one hand to initiate progressive narrative structure and visualization, and on the other to support socially conservative, patriarchal values. Steranko is among the first American comic book auteurs and he …

Can The Qualities Of Intrinsically Motivated Individuals At Diverse “Life Stages” Be Harnessed To Create Social Change?, Donna Lynne Greene
Theses - ALL
For my thesis investigation, I researched the intrinsic motivational qualities of individuals at diverse “life stages”. I’m trying to develop a method or system of solving problems that tapped into these main things: First the idea of intrinsic motivation, Second the knowledge and understanding of diverse life stages, Third the methods of design thinking, Fourth the cooperative nature of community and collaboration.
I explored these things to develop an intergenerational system of collaboration and thought exchange toward the goal of helping to solve societal issues on many levels, (personal, local, regional, internationally). My design is a collaborative social innovation community.
