The Association Between Latent Tuberculosis Infection And Diabetes Mellitus Control In The United States, Whitney L. Remy
The Association Between Latent Tuberculosis Infection And Diabetes Mellitus Control In The United States, Whitney L. Remy
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Rationale: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is recognized as a common comorbid condition for tuberculosis (TB). Those with comorbid conditions are more likely to develop active TB, to have trouble with treatment, and to have more severe symptoms.
Objective: To measure the prevalence and distribution of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and DM control in the United State and test their association when measured by tuberculin skin test (TST) or QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube blood test (QFT-GIT) and by HbA1c, respectively. Literature Review: One-third of the world population is infected with TB. Ten percent of TB cases worldwide are linked to diabetes mellitus. Studies …

A Comparative Study Of Satisfaction With The Police In The United States And Australia, Mengyan Dai, Xin Jiang
Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study comparatively examines three major models of citizens' satisfaction with the police, using two similar community surveys on policing from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and Queensland, Australia. It tests the wider applicability of the demographic model, the neighborhood condition model, and the prior contacts with police model and analyzes whether the effects of common determinants on citizens' satisfaction remain the same across the two international samples. Results from a series of comparisons show that there is a substantial amount of similarity across statistical models for Cincinnati and Queensland, suggesting a general framework of citizens' satisfaction with the police that could …

Assessing Differences Between Early And Later Adopters Of Accountable Care Organizations Using Taxonomic Analysis, Frances M. Wu, Stephen M. Shortell, Valerie A. Lewis, Carrie H. Colla, Elliott S. Fisher
Dartmouth Scholarship
Objective. To compare early and later adopters of the accountable care organization (ACO) model, using the taxonomy of larger, integrated system; smaller, physician-led; and hybrid ACOs. Data sources. The National Survey of ACOs, Waves 1 and 2.
Studydesign. Clusteranalysisusingthetwo-stepclusteringapproach,validatedusing discriminant analysis. Wave 2 data analyzed separately to assess differences from Wave 1 and then data pooled across waves. Findings. Compared to early ACOs, later adopter ACOs included a greater breadth of provider group types and a greater proportion self-reported as integrated delivery systems. When data from the two time periods were combined, a three-cluster solution similar to the original cluster …
The United States, Richard Briffault
The United States, Richard Briffault

The United States is an example of how three branches of government can stall and derail reform initiatives. The judiciary in particular is central to the US experience with political finance reform, repeatedly striking down legislation on party finance, despite consensus from executive and legislative branches. The most recent Supreme Court ruling, in April 2014, struck down one of the last remaining federal regulations, on the overall campaign contribution limits for individuals. At a subnational level, the United States does, however, see significant variations in terms of regulations on the flow of money into politics at a state level. In …
Law And Regime Change: The Common Law, Knowledge Regimes, And Democracy Between The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Kunal Parker
Law And Regime Change: The Common Law, Knowledge Regimes, And Democracy Between The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Kunal Parker
Articles
Using a change in knowledge regime as a paradigm of regime change, this paper explores the career of common law thinking in the United States between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It shows how, under the pressures of anti-foundational thinking, knowledge moved from a nineteenth-century regime of “knowledge that,” a regime of foundational knowledge, to an early-twentieth-century regime of “knowledge how,” a regime of anti-foundational knowledge concerned with the procedures, processes, and protocols of arriving at knowledge. It then shows how common law thinkers adapted to this change in knowledge regimes, transforming the common law from a body of substantive …
International Law In The Obama Administration's Pivot To Asia: The China Seas Disputes, The Trans- Pacific Partnership, Rivalry With The Prc, And Status Quo Legal Norms In U.S. Foreign Policy, Jacques Delisle
All Faculty Scholarship
The Obama administration’s “pivot” or “rebalance” to Asia has shaped the Obama administration’s impact on international law. The pivot or rebalance has been primarily about regional security in East Asia (principally, the challenges of coping with a rising and more assertive China—particularly in the context of disputes over the South China Sea—and resulting concerns among regional states), and secondarily about U.S. economic relations with the region (including, as a centerpiece, the Trans-Pacific Partnership). In both areas, the Obama administration has made international law more significant as an element of U.S. foreign policy and has sought to present the U.S. as …

Currently there are estimated to be approximately 3.7 million contact lens wearers in the United Kingdom and 39.2 million in North America. Contact lens wear is a major risk factor for developing an infection of the cornea known as keratitis due to poor lens hygiene practices. While there is an international standard for testing disinfection methods against bacteria and fungi (ISO 14729), no such guidelines exist for the protozoan Acanthamoeba, which causes a potentially blinding keratitis most commonly seen in contact lens wearers, and as a result, many commercially available disinfecting solutions show incomplete disinfection after 6 and 24 …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Cause-related marketing is a common business practice that aims to align strategic goals of a for-profit company with the social needs of the stakeholders and occurs most frequently when a portion of a purchase is donated to a designated social cause. The utilization of cause-related marketing has been shown to increase purchase intention of consumers. The present study examines the impact that culture has on consumer’s preference of social cause in a cause-related marketing campaign by comparing two countries, the United States and Chile. The researchers predicted that people from Chile and those with an interdependent self-construal would be more …

Securities/Administrative Law—Internal Reporters Who Blow The Whistle: Are They Protected Under The Dodd-Frank Act’S Anti-Retaliation Provision?, Kristin Goodchild
Western New England Law Review
In 2010, Congress enacted the Dodd-Frank Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act (the “Dodd-Frank Act”), which was a sweeping piece of legislation that required the implementation of new rules and regulations throughout the financial industry. Interpretative ambiguity exists within the Dodd-Frank Act’s whistleblower program, which provides a definition of who qualifies as a whistleblower, and an anti-retaliation provision, which is intended to protect whistleblowers from retaliation. The ambiguity arises because a whistleblower is defined as an individual who makes a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”). However, the anti-retaliation provision describes three categories of protected whistleblowing activities, …

Public Health Law—Remedying And Regulating The Unintended Consequences Of Subtherapeutic Dosing Of Livestock With Antibiotics: Can The Epa’S Implementation Of The Clean Water Act Reign In The Problem?, Chris Erchull, Laura Fisher
Western New England Law Review
The way in which the United States has come to practice agriculture has changed drastically over the past century. As urban populations have grown and rural populations dwindled, research focused on raising production levels and decreasing costs led to the increasingly common practice of low-dose and long-term application of antibiotics to animals being raised for slaughter. Such use of antibiotics continues to have far-reaching consequences impacting human, animal, and environmental health and wellness. This article examines the fractured federal oversight of the use of antibiotics in industrial agriculture and proposes an interpretation of provisions of the Clean Water Act as …

Environmental Law—Cercla Enforcement: Terminology And Meaning Of “Treatment” Arranger Liability, Daniel J. Depasquale
Western New England Law Review
CERCLA arranger liability was forever changed by the Supreme Court decision in Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Ry. Co. v. United States, 556 U.S. 599 (2009). In the aftermath, EPA has been hamstrung with the difficulty of substantiating a Potentially Responsible Party’s (“PRP”) intent to arrange for disposal of a hazardous substance, as well as attempting to overcome the ever-increasing scientific capabilities of PRPs to demonstrate that proportionality of damages is appropriate for a given Superfund site. This Article is the first in depth analysis teasing apart what it means for a PRP to arrange for disposal, as opposed to …
