In this article we would like to respond to Romaniuk’s (2013) Viewpoint article "What’s (brand) love got to do with it?" and provide our point of view regarding brand love. While we agree with some of the limitations she points out in Batra et al.’s (2012) article, and acknowledge them, we disagree with her statement that there is ‘no evidence that building brand love leads to higher market share, sales or profitability’ (Romaniuk 2013, p. 185). It is conceivable that there was no evidence when she wrote the article in 2013. However, as this article illustrates, we have since 2013 …
A Theorem On The Methodology Of Positive Economics, Eduardo Pol
A Theorem On The Methodology Of Positive Economics, Eduardo Pol
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
It has long been recognized that the Milton Friedman's 1953 essay on economic methodology (or F53, for short) displays open-ended unclarities. For example, the notion of "unrealistic assumption" plays a role of absolutely fundamental importance in his methodological framework, but the term itself was never unambiguously defined in any of the Friedman's contributions to the economics discipline. As a result, F53 is appealing and liberating because the choice of premises in economic theorizing is not subject to any constraints concerning the degree of realisticness (or unrealisticness) of the assumptions. The question: "Does the methodology of positive economics prevent the overlapping …

Mechanism Design For Near Real-Time Retail Payment And Settlement Systems, Zhiling Guo, Robert John Kauffman, Mei Lin, Dan Ma

have made extensive use of interbank netting systems, in which payments are accumulated for end-of-day settlement. This approach, known as deferred net settlement (DNS), reduces the liquidity needs of a payment system, but bears inherent operational risks. As large dollar volumes of retail payments accumulate swiftly, real-time gross settlement (RTGS) is an attractive option. It permits immediate settlement of transactions during the day, but it brings up other risks that require consideration. We propose a hybrid payment management system involving elements of both DNS and RTGS. We explore several hybrid system mechanism designs to allow payment prioritization, reduce payment delays, …

Palmer, a senior editor and personal finance columnist for U.S. News & World Report, claims that, due to our uncertain economy, people need to find ways of earning income beyond their full-time jobs. A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Medicare Payment And Service Volume For Cataract, Glaucoma, And Retina Procedures From 2005 To 2009, Dan Ang Gong
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent to which changes in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule influence the volume and intensity of ophthalmic services for cataract, glaucoma, and retina procedures.
We conducted a retrospective, longitudinal analysis using a fixed-effects regression model of Medicare Part B carriers representing all fifty states and the District of Columbia from 2005 to 2009 to calculate Medicare payment-volume elasticities, defined as the percent change in Medicare service volume per 1% change in Medicare payment, for twelve procedures: non-complex and complex cataract surgery (CPT 66984 and CPT 66982), laser trabeculoplasty (CPT 65855), trabeculectomy …

Vermont Life Dotcom: Culture And Economy In The Burlington, Vt Web Tech Industry, Luke Dorfman
UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses
This thesis explores the interplay between culture and economy within the Burlington, VT web tech industry in an effort to understand how and why this area has emerged as a growing hub for these types of businesses. Vermont presents a particularly attractive place of study as it promotes values of both individual freedom and communal citizenship, a dichotomy that has fascinating sociocultural and economic implications. An ethnographic study comprising interviews and participant observation provided the foundation for this research, offering an intimate glimpse into the lived experiences of individuals working at two particular Burlington web tech companies: Dealer.com and CPA …

Book Review: The Wound And The Blessing: Economics Relationships And Happiness By Luigino Bruni (New City Press, 2012), Brian M. Mccall
Brian M McCall
This book review critically examines this important work on the relationship between economic prosperity and happiness. The review concludes that although Professor Bruni accurately diagnoses the causes of the paradox of increased wealth but decreased appiness in the modern West, he fails to fully articulate the solution.

This article responds to John Kirkwood’s Collusion to Control a Powerful Customer: Amazon, E-Books, and Antitrust Policy. Professor Kirkwood argued that in a monopsonistic market (i.e., one where there exists one powerful buyer and many less powerful sellers), or a market in which a buyer has significantly more power than the sellers, collusion on the part of the sellers might be justified, and ought to be a defense to antitrust claims, under certain conditions. This article summarizes Kirkwood’s proposed requirements for invoking this defense and argues that they are overly prescriptive, failing to allow certain instances of beneficial collusion, imposing …
