Limited Transplantation Of Antigen-Expressing Hematopoietic Stem Cells Induces Long-Lasting Cytotoxic T Cell Responses And Effect Of Altered Suppressive Myeloid Population On Hiv-Disease Progression, Warren L. Denning
All ETDs from UAB
While each type of cancer and chronic viral infection has its own specific pathology, they share two common mechanisms of immune evasion. The first mechanism is the exhaustion or deletion of antigen-specific T cells. The second mechanism is the formation of an immunosuppressive environment responsible for the block of T cell function. Elicitation of antigen-specific T cells be accomplished by immunotherapy in place of conventional treatments such as HAART and chemotherapy. In addition, immunotherapy can alleviate the side-effects associated with long-term use of conventional therapies while reducing the total cost. The results presented here provide an alternative to conventional methods …
Feminism, Power, And Sex Work In The Context Of Hiv/Aids: Consequences For Women's Health, Aziza Ahmed
Feminism, Power, And Sex Work In The Context Of Hiv/Aids: Consequences For Women's Health, Aziza Ahmed
Faculty Scholarship
This paper examines the involvement of feminists in approaches to sex work in the context of HIV/AIDS. The paper focuses on two moments where feminist disagreement produced results in favor of an "anti-trafficking" approach to addressing the vulnerability of sex workers in the context of HIV. The first is the UNAIDS Guidance Note on Sex Work and the second is the "anti-prostitution pledge" found in the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. This article also examines the anti-sex work position articulated by abolitionist feminists and demonstrates the unintended consequences of the abolitionist position on women's health. By examining the actual …
Immunoglobin And Fcγ Receptor Genes Influence The Control Of Hiv Replication And The Progression Of Hiv Infection, Ray Deepe
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
HIV is an infection affecting approximately 33 million people worldwide especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeastern Asia. HIV infection is marked by the loss of CD4+ T-cells and is the causative agent of AIDS. Host genetic factors have been shown to influence the progression and outcome of HIV infection, but the genes identified thus far account for approximately 15% of the variance observed in viral load and progression, suggesting involvement of additional genes in HIV pathogenesis. FcyRIIa and FcyRIIIa genotypes have been shown to be influential in the transmission, control, and progression of HIV. These receptors contain polymorphisms that influence …
Global Analysis Of Cell Infection And Virus Production On Hiv-1 Dynamics, Jin Xu
Global Analysis Of Cell Infection And Virus Production On Hiv-1 Dynamics, Jin Xu
Digitized Theses
More than one sub-type of HIVs have been identified. This raises an issue of co-infections by multiple strains of HIVs. In this thesis, we propose two mathematical models, one ignoring intracellular delay and the other incorporating the delay, to describe the interactions of the populations of CD4+cells and two HIV stains. By nature, the two strains compete for CD4+ cells to invade for their own replications. By analyzing the two models, we find that the models demonstrate threshold dynamics: if the overall basic reproduction number Ro < 1, then the infection free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable; when R0 > 1, then the competition exclusion principle generically holds in the sense that, except for …
Generation Of Long-Lived Dendritic Cells For A Dendritic Cell-Based Therapeutic Hiv Vaccine, Ryan Nicholas Buensuceso
Generation Of Long-Lived Dendritic Cells For A Dendritic Cell-Based Therapeutic Hiv Vaccine, Ryan Nicholas Buensuceso
Digitized Theses
Despite advances in therapy, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) continues to be a global problem. New therapeutic avenues are being explored, including dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy. While DCs can efficiently promote an immune response, their limited lifespan within the lymph node represents an obstacle to efficient immunotherapy.
;We examined different gene transfer methods, observing lentiviral transduction to be the most effective. Transduction using generated lentiviral transfer vectors encoding M11L and EGFP were used to determine effects on cellular viability. We did not observe significant differences in viability following apoptosis induction in transduced L cells. In primary DC cultures, transduction with …

Mobile Outreach Strategies For Screening Hepatitis And Hiv In High Risk Populations, Donna M. Zucker
Mobile Outreach Strategies For Screening Hepatitis And Hiv In High Risk Populations, Donna M. Zucker
Donna M. Zucker
Objectives: To screen, counsel and offer hepatitis A and B vaccination for subjects at high risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV, and determine any relationship between risk factors and HCV positivity. Design and Sample Q1 : A descriptive correlational design. We correlated risk factors and HCV positivity and measured vaccination completion rates. Two hundred and two unduplicated subjects in 4 locations in Western Massachusetts: a walk in substance abuse clinic, a homeless shelter, a county jail, and a community corrections facility. Measures: Demographic data and a standard HCV risk- screening survey were used. Results: Significantly higher rates of …
