This study explored the perceptions of African American high school males regarding their experiences in academically rigorous programs. A specific investigation as to how this cohort defined giftedness or academic success is underscored along with their perceptions of factors they identified as hindrances to their academic success subsequent to their graduation from high school. The study also focuses on the implications for this cohort participating in gifted programming, given the intensity of these academic engagements. Black Mayors In Non-Majority Black (Medium Sized) Cities: Universalizing The Interests Of Blacks, Ravi K. Perry
Ethnic Studies Review
The nature of political representation of Black constituents' interests from their elected Black representatives is changing in the twentyfirst century. Increasingly, African Americans are being elected to political offices where the majority of their constituents are not African American. Previous research on this question tended to characterize Black politicians' efforts to represent their Black constituents' interests in two frames: deracialized or racialized (McCormick and Jones 1993; Cruse 1990). However, the advent of the twenty-first century has exhausted the utility ofthat polarization. The Color Of Our Future: The Pitfalls And Possibilities Of The Race Card In American Culture, Christopher A. Bracey

We live in a country haunted by a past of slavery, segregation, racism, and violence. Though many systemic corrections have been attempted, a large percentage of African-Americans continue to fall behind their White counterparts in nearly every index of socio-economic well-being. The debate rages on as to why this situation exists and persists, and people on both sides of the color divide have become increasingly sensitive to perceptions and accusations of racial injustice.
