A Torque Based Power Input Model For Friction Stir Welding, Jefferson W. Pew Dec 2006

A Torque Based Power Input Model For Friction Stir Welding, Jefferson W. Pew

Theses and Dissertations

For decades models have been developed for predicting the size of the weld nugget and heat affected zones in fusion welded structures. The basis for these models is the welding heat input, which is fairly well understood for most arc welding processes. However, this traditional approach is not as straightforward for Friction Stir Welding (FSW). To date, there is no definitive relationship to quantify the heat input for FSW. An important step to establish a heat input model is to identify how FSW process parameters affect weld power. This study details the relationship between FSW process parameters and torque for …

Offshore Strategies In Global Political Economy: Small Islands And The Case Of The Eu And Oecd Harmful Tax Competition Initiatives, Richard Woodward Oct 2006

Offshore Strategies In Global Political Economy: Small Islands And The Case Of The Eu And Oecd Harmful Tax Competition Initiatives, Richard Woodward

Articles

This article investigates how recent attempts by the European Union (EU) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to clamp down on harmful tax competition will affect small island economies with offshore financial centres (OFCs). It argues that although there are legitimate concerns about the initiatives, the likelihood that small island OFCs will disappear is remote. A confluence of factors have forced the EU and OECD to dilute their original proposals to the extent that while some marginal OFCs may be driven out of existence, more sophisticated OFCs will be unharmed and may even benefit from this supposed …

A Comparison Between The West & The East In State Supervised Control Through The Power Of Eminent Domain, Eman Mga Eshmawy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Eminent domain is a problem that effects both the West and the East. This thesis focuses on blighted homes that are confiscated by government and later used for private if not corporate reasons rather than for public use intentions. The comparison is between the United States and Egypt, and three neighborhoods are discussed from each country separately. The comparison is between two quantitative analyses' between the United States and Egypt showing that this type of eradication of property allows for the authority and power of government to be used negatively towards society. The surveys were collected during approximately a two …

At The Confluence Of Science And Power: Water Struggles Of New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Carolyn Kolb May 2006

At The Confluence Of Science And Power: Water Struggles Of New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Carolyn Kolb

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

New Orleans failed to solve its water infrastructure problems in the nineteenth century because a shifting locus of power in a variable political and financial environment hampered wise decision making, while technology choices were limited by contemporary knowledge, scientists' ignorance, or by technicians' poor presentation skills for new ideas. And, selection was often governed by prejudice: personal, racial, or against technology. New Orleans was able to deal with its water difficulties only when those with the power to make or influence decisions had an available technology capable of handling the problem and they chose to use it. Power and science …

The Women House Church Leaders Of China: Interviews With A Muted Group, Timothy R. Wommack

Masters Theses

While studying the Bakweri people of Cameroon in the 1960s, Edwin and Shirley
Ardener discovered that it was the men who dominated and controlled the power and language of the group and created the societal understanding and the cultural makeup of their tribe's identity. The men did not allow the women to speak or have a say in the elements of their culture; these women were muted. Throughout history many individuals, especially women, have been muted in any number of ways. These include political, economical, social, cultural constrictions, even to the point of death, to keep them from being represented. …

Reliability, Effect Size, And Responsiveness And Intraclass Correlation Of Health Status Measures Used In Randomized And Cluster-Randomized Trials, Paula Diehr, Lu Chen, Donald L. Patrick, Ziding Feng, Yutaka Yasui Mar 2006

Reliability, Effect Size, And Responsiveness And Intraclass Correlation Of Health Status Measures Used In Randomized And Cluster-Randomized Trials, Paula Diehr, Lu Chen, Donald L. Patrick, Ziding Feng, Yutaka Yasui

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Background: New health status instruments are described by psychometric properties, such as Reliability, Effect Size, and Responsiveness. For cluster-randomized trials, another important statistic is the Intraclass Correlation for the instrument within clusters. Studies using better instruments can be performed with smaller sample sizes, but better instruments may be more expensive in terms of dollars, lost opportunities, or poorer data quality due to the response burden of longer instruments. Investigators often need to estimate the psychometric properties of a new instrument, or of an established instrument in a new setting. Optimal sample sizes for estimating these properties have not been studied …

The Influence Of Site Physical Characteristics On Power Quality Performance, Glenn Nicholson, Victor J. Gosbell, Ashok Parsotam Jan 2006

The Influence Of Site Physical Characteristics On Power Quality Performance, Glenn Nicholson, Victor J. Gosbell, Ashok Parsotam

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Routine power quality (PQ) monitoring is limited to a statistical sample of sites that are hopefully representative of the overall PQ performance of the network. It would be helpful if the PQ performance of un-monitored sites could be inferred from the results of a PQ survey from a site having similar physical characteristics. This is only possible if it is known which physical characteristics are most influential in determining PQ performance. This paper describes the application of factor analysis techniques to determine the relationship between known site physical characteristics and PQ disturbance levels on the Vector Distribution Network (Auckland, New …

Distributed Generation For Minimization Of Power Losses In Distribution Systems, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Appropriate size and location of distributed generation (DG) play a significant role in minimizing power losses in distribution systems. This paper represents techniques to minimize power losses in a distribution feeder by optimizing DG model in terms of size, location and operating point of DG. Sensitivity analysis for power losses in terms of DG size and DG operating point has been performed. The proposed sensitivity indices can indicate the changes in power losses with respect to DG current injection. The proposed techniques have been developed with considering load characteristics and representing loads with constant impedance and constant current models, separately. …

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper analyses the human resource management (HRM) practices involved in the implementation of a process innovation approach to product development (concurrent engineering (CE)) in the Australian subsidiary of a multinational firm engaged in military defence electronics. According to the research literature, almost all aspects of managing product development under a CE approach are linked to people management. Yet in this particular case, other than project team structure, the prescriptive HRM dimensions of CE were conspicuously absent in the implementation process. This absence is explained by the play of power and politics involving stakeholders analysed over an 18 month period. …

Power, Norms, And International Intellectual Property Law, Tai-Heng Cheng Jan 2006

Power, Norms, And International Intellectual Property Law, Tai-Heng Cheng

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article begins with the premise that international law is the net result of global processes of interactions among state and non-state participants in the international system. The Article builds on the author’s previous work by proposing a theory of international law that fills the interstices between private and public international law. Participants generally deploy power and invoke legal and social norms in pursuit of interests and in response to the strategies of other participants. Eventually, outcomes that reflect both power and norms result, and these outcomes in turn modify norms and reallocate power. New outcomes then follow in future …
