Nature Of Subpicosecond Terahertz Pulse Propagation In Practical Dielectric-Filled Parallel-Plate Waveguides, Rajind Mendis Jan 2006

Nature Of Subpicosecond Terahertz Pulse Propagation In Practical Dielectric-Filled Parallel-Plate Waveguides, Rajind Mendis

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

It is analytically shown that the presence of submicrometer-sized air gaps between the dielectric and metal contact surfaces in a dielectric-filled metallic parallel-plate waveguide can have a dramatic effect on the guided-wave propagation of subpicosecond terahertz pulses. Through the use of metal-evaporated dielectric surfaces to overcome the imperfect contact problem, and a special air-dielectric-air cascaded waveguide geometry to avoid multimode excitation, undistorted subpicosecond terahertz pulse propagation via the single-TEM mode is demonstrated, for what is believed to be the first time, in a silicon-filled PPWG.

Piezoelectromagnetic Waves In A Ceramic Plate Between Two Ceramic Half-Spaces, S. N. Jiang, Q. Jiang, X. F. Li, S. H. Guo, H. G. Zhou, J. S. Chang Jan 2006

Piezoelectromagnetic Waves In A Ceramic Plate Between Two Ceramic Half-Spaces, S. N. Jiang, Q. Jiang, X. F. Li, S. H. Guo, H. G. Zhou, J. S. Chang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We analyze the propagation of piezoelectromagnetic waves guided by a plate of polarized ceramics between two ceramic half-spaces. An exact dispersion relation is obtained, which reduces to a few known elastic, electromagnetic, and quasistatic piezoelectric wave solutions in the literature as special cases. Numerical solutions to the equation that determines the dispersion relation show the existence of guided waves. The results are useful for acoustic wave and microwave devices.

Young, Fast And Dead: A Fresh Perspective From The Early Driving Group, Amanda Burrell, Tonia L. Gray Jan 2006

Young, Fast And Dead: A Fresh Perspective From The Early Driving Group, Amanda Burrell, Tonia L. Gray

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Risk taking behaviour is synonymous with adolescence. Moreover, epidemiological statistics associated with early driver deaths in Australia paint a disturbing picture. There is considerable debate about the effectiveness of advertising and marketing as a prophylactic to unsafe driving behaviours. This paper discusses the search for innovative approaches to road safety campaigns by accessing the perceptions of the novice driver group. A case scenario was developed by reviewing current literature on adolescent health behaviour, risk awareness, road safety and marketing communication. Initial findings from a pilot study with members of the early driving group, imply that they, as members of the …

Performance Of Plate Fin Compact Heat Exchangers, Ibrahim Mohamed Khalil Jan 2006

Performance Of Plate Fin Compact Heat Exchangers, Ibrahim Mohamed Khalil

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Heat exchangers design includes the consideration of both the heat transfer rates between two fluids and the pumping power required to overcome fluid friction and push the fluids through the heat exchangers. In gas flow heat exchangers, the friction power limitations force the designer to select moderately low mass velocities. Low mass velocities with low thermal conductivities will result in low heat transfer rate per unit of the surface area. Thus a large surface area is a typical characteristic of a gas flow heat exchanger; The problem of a large required area can be solved by using large area density …
