Towards Effective Content-Based Music Retrieval With Multiple Acoustic Feature Composition, Jialie Shen, John Shepherd, Ngu Ahh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a new approach to constructing music descriptors to support efficient content-based music retrieval and classification. The system applies multiple musical properties combined with a hybrid architecture based on principal component analysis (PCA) and a multilayer perceptron neural network. This architecture enables straightforward incorporation of multiple musical feature vectors, based on properties such as timbral texture, pitch, and rhythm structure, into a single low-dimensioned vector that is more effective for classification than the larger individual feature vectors. The use of supervised training enables incorporation of human musical perception that further enhances the classification process. We compare …

Social Learning Theory As A Model For Illegitimate Peer-To-Peer Use And The Effects Of Implementing A Legal Music Downloading Service On Peer-To-Peer Music Piracy, Nathan Fisk Nov 2006

Social Learning Theory As A Model For Illegitimate Peer-To-Peer Use And The Effects Of Implementing A Legal Music Downloading Service On Peer-To-Peer Music Piracy, Nathan Fisk

Theses

In an attempt to both provide added services to students and help curb the growing problem of music piracy on college campuses, many universities have implemented legal digital music services. The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was one of these universities, where the Cdigix Ctrax service is provided to students. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of such a strategy, Information Technology Services (ITS) at RIT requested the services of Dr. Samuel McQuade, who administered a Webbased survey to all Ctrax users and an equal number of randomly selected non-Ctrax using students at RIT. In total, 447 students responded to …

Three Reactions To Mgm V. Grokster, Pamela Samuelson Oct 2006

Three Reactions To Mgm V. Grokster, Pamela Samuelson

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

It was prescient of the Michigan Telecommunications and Technology Law Review to have organized a conference to discuss the Supreme Court's decision in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. v. Grokster, Inc. As the articles in this issue reveal, commentators have had somewhat mixed reactions to the Grokster decision. Perhaps I am the most mixed (or mixed up) about Grokster among its commentators, for I have had not just one but three reactions to the Grokster decision. My first reaction was to question whether MGM and its co-plaintiffs really won the Grokster case, or at least won it in the way they had hoped. …

File Sharing, Copyright, And The Optimal Production Of Music, Gerald R. Faulhaber Oct 2006

File Sharing, Copyright, And The Optimal Production Of Music, Gerald R. Faulhaber

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Much economic, political, judicial and legal attention has been showered on the significant changes currently taking place within the music production and distribution business forced by the use of the Internet for both file sharing (of unauthorized copyrighted material) and more recent online (legal) music distribution. The strong demand for music, coupled with the low cost of distributing illegal copies via peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, is unraveling the business model by which music has traditionally been created, developed, and distributed. Application of traditional copyright law has been ineffective in stopping the loss of business in the traditional channels. Producers have implemented …

The Study Of Music: A Valuable Part Of School Education, Melanye Crayton Oct 2006

The Study Of Music: A Valuable Part Of School Education, Melanye Crayton

Senior Honors Theses

Music has been a part of human experience since the existence of man. It has been studied throughout the ages by philosophers and students, laymen and courtesans. When America was settled, it became a part of a student's education, eventually becoming part of the curriculum of public schools. In the twentieth century, the study of music experienced a decline in the public educational systems.

The study of music is beneficial for all students. It provides students with an opportunity to excel in school work, the benefit of learning in a constructive and positive atmosphere, and the opportunity to learn about …

The Study Of Selected Twentieth-Century American Piano Compositions Appropriate For Use With Freshman And Sophomore College Piano Majors: Performance And Pedagogical Suggestions, Li-Jung Lee Aug 2006

The Study Of Selected Twentieth-Century American Piano Compositions Appropriate For Use With Freshman And Sophomore College Piano Majors: Performance And Pedagogical Suggestions, Li-Jung Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Studying and performing twentieth-century compositions are important for piano students to become well-rounded musicians. This study presents a performance analysis of repertoire from three highly influential American composers: Four Piano Blues (1926-1948) by Aaron Copland, Excursions Op. 20 (1944) by Samuel Barber and Suite de Danzas Criollas Op. 15 (1946) by Alberto Ginastera. Although these works are not the most technically demanding works by these composers, the nationalistic character of the Argentine and American folk melodies and dances; the popular styles of ragtime, blues and jazz; as well as their incorporation into twentieth-century compositional technique will challenge students in their …

All Rights Reserved? Cultural Monopoly And The Troubles With Copyright , Michael Geist

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

With an increasing ease for one to download, trade and share information, there is also an increasing desire by companies, corporations and private interests to protect their works. In a time where everything can be commoditized and ideas can be bought and sold at a price, a question we must answer is - Who owns our creativity? Must all rights be reserved? This lecture explores the growth of the citizen journalist and the blossoming of independent creativity online. He also examines the concerns with copyright: how lobby groups have consistently pushed for ever stronger rules. Finally, Dr. Geist presents the …
