Evaluation Of The Effects Of A Curriculum-Based Math Intervention Package With Elementary School-Age Students In A Summer Academic Clinic, Nicholas E. Hoda Dec 2006

Evaluation Of The Effects Of A Curriculum-Based Math Intervention Package With Elementary School-Age Students In A Summer Academic Clinic, Nicholas E. Hoda

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to empirically evaluate the effects of the Math to Mastery intervention package versus the effects of immediate corrective feedback with elementary school students who were performing at least one year below grade level in mathematics. Students were participants in a one-month summer academic clinic for remediation of reading, writing, and mathematics deficits held at a university in the southeastern United States. A combined-series multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effects of both interventions for gains in fluency as measured by digits correct per minute on one minute curriculum-based measurement probes. …

Spectrally Arbitrary Tree Sign Pattern Matrices, Krishna Kaphle Dec 2006

Spectrally Arbitrary Tree Sign Pattern Matrices, Krishna Kaphle

Mathematics Theses

A sign pattern (matrix) is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,–, 0}. A sign pattern matrix A is a spectrally arbitrary pattern if for every monic real polynomial p(x) of degree n there exists a real matrix B whose entries agree in sign with A such that the characteristic polynomial of B is p(x). All 3 × 3 SAP's, as well as tree sign patterns with star graphs that are SAP's, have already been characterized. We investigate tridiagonal sign patterns of order 4. All irreducible tridiagonal SAP's are identified. Necessary and sufficient conditions for an irreducible tridiagonal …

Dynamics Of Random Boolean Networks Governed By A Generalization Of Rule 22 Of Elementary Cellular Automata., Gary L. Beck Dec 2006

Dynamics Of Random Boolean Networks Governed By A Generalization Of Rule 22 Of Elementary Cellular Automata., Gary L. Beck

Student Work

This study considers a simple Boolean network with N nodes, each node's state at time t being determined by a certain number of k parent nodes. The network is analyzed when the connectivity k is fixed or variable. This is an extension of a model studied by Andrecut [4) who considered the dynamics of two stochastic coupled maps. Making use of the Boolean rule that is a generalization of Rule 22 of elementary cellular automata, a generalization of the formula for providing the probability of finding a node in state 1 at a time t is determined and used to …

Teaching Time Savers: Some Advice On Giving Advice, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2006

Teaching Time Savers: Some Advice On Giving Advice, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

There are always a lot of questions that need to be answered at the beginning of a course. When are office hours? What are the grading policies? How many exams will there be? Will late homework be accepted? We have all seen the answers to these sorts of questions form the bulk of a standard course syllabus, and most of us feel an obligation (and rightly so) to provide such information.

Meeting The Needs Of A Latino English Language Learner Through Teacher Research, Sylvia R. Taube, Barbara E. Polnick, Jacqueline Minor Lane Dec 2006

Meeting The Needs Of A Latino English Language Learner Through Teacher Research, Sylvia R. Taube, Barbara E. Polnick, Jacqueline Minor Lane

The Qualitative Report

Over the years, Ms. Lane’s third grade mathematics classroom had become increasingly diverse. Challenged by the growing population of English Language Learners (ELL) and he r need to change her teaching practice to meet their needs, Ms. Lane selected to study how best to teach one of her greatest challenges, Ana, a Latino ELL who also had a learning disability. Ms. Lane and her two university mentors found that using a collaborative action research model provided a structure for researching, designing, and implementing strategies that helped Ana improve her mathematics performance. The university mentors found that they, too, benefited from …

On T-Pure And Almost Pure Exact Sequences Of Lca Groups, Peter Loth Nov 2006

On T-Pure And Almost Pure Exact Sequences Of Lca Groups, Peter Loth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A proper short exact sequence in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be t-pure if φ(A) is a topologically pure subgroup of B, that is, if for all positive integers n. We establish conditions under which t-pure exact sequences split and determine those locally compact abelian groups K ⊕ D (where K is compactly generated and D is discrete) which are t-pure injective or t-pure projective. Calling the extension (*) almost pure if for all positive integers n, we obtain a complete description of the almost pure injectives and almost pure projectives in the category of …

Multiattribute Acceptance Sampling Plans., Anup Majumdar Dr. Sep 2006

Multiattribute Acceptance Sampling Plans., Anup Majumdar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Irrespective of the type of product, evaluation of conformity to specified requirements of its quality characteristics is an integral part of quality assurance. Although they form a set of necessary verification activities almost at all stages of production, these activities, known as inspection do not add value to the product on their own and are to be kept at their minimum. The sampling inspection where a portion of a collection of product units is inspected on a set of characteristics with a view to making decision about acceptance or otherwise becomes relevant in this context. The number of elements of the …

Essays On Individual And Collective Powers In A Voting Body., Sonali Roy Dr. Aug 2006

Essays On Individual And Collective Powers In A Voting Body., Sonali Roy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

MotivationThe issue of measurement of voting power is a very important topic of discussion in social science these days. The concept of voting power concerns any collective decision making body (or, equivalently, a collectivity) which makes ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decisions on any issue, by the process of voting. Examples of such bodies abound in today’s world. The United Nations Security Council, The Council of Ministers in the European Union, the Parliament of the republic of India, the board room of any corporate house etc., are all examples of such decision making bodies. The voting process of each of these bodies is …

Creating Communities Of Mathematical Thinkers In The Pre-Kindergarten Classroom., Robin Penley Herndon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes a standards-based pre-kindergarten mathematics curriculum. The purpose of this thesis was to create a series of original lesson plans for the pre-kindergarten classroom that would address defined standards with instructional and other materials appropriate for teaching and assessing student understanding of the concepts. The curriculum is based on standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Virginia Department of Education's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. The body of the work introduces the foundation for the thesis with theoretical underpinning, defines the content strands and learning objectives, establishes a pacing schedule for meeting …

Teaching Time Savers: Style Points, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I began as an assistant professor, I had a pretty good sense of how much time it would take for me to prepare for each class. After a few conversations with my new colleagues, I even had a good sense of how much time I should devote to tasks like office hours and committee work. Somewhere in the middle of grading my first exam, though, it became painfully clear that I had underestimated the amount of time I would need to grade exams!

Second Graders' Solution Strategies And Understanding Of A Combination Problem, Tiffany Marie Hessing Jul 2006

Second Graders' Solution Strategies And Understanding Of A Combination Problem, Tiffany Marie Hessing

Theses and Dissertations

I inquire about second graders' capabilities of developing solution strategies and the original variety of strategies they bring forth while solving a combination problem. Based on analysis of the data presented in this paper, students developed five different general strategies. After analyzing what the second grade students were capable of developing, we can conclude that young children are capable of developing powerful systematic strategies grounded in their personal experiences. This research shows that even when the teacher does not foster personal agency, children will still exercise agency. The social interactions in the classroom helped students learn to propose mathematical ideas, …

On The Combinatorics Of Certain Garside Semigroups, Christopher R. Cornwell Jul 2006

On The Combinatorics Of Certain Garside Semigroups, Christopher R. Cornwell

Theses and Dissertations

In his dissertation, F.A. Garside provided a solution to the word and conjugacy problems in the braid group on n-strands, using a particular element that he called the fundamental word. Others have since defined fundamental words in the generalized setting of Artin groups, and even more recently in Garside groups. We consider the problem of finding the number of representations of a power of the fundamental word in these settings. In the process, we find a Pascal-like identity that is satisfied in a certain class of Garside groups.

Hole Dynamics In Polymer Langmuir Films, James C. Alexander, Andrew J. Bernoff, Elizabeth K. Mann, J. Adin Mann Jr., Lu Zou

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This article develops a model for the closing of a gaseous hole in a liquid domain within a two-dimensional fluid layer coupled to a Stokesian subfluid substrate, and compares this model to experiments following hole dynamics in a polymer Langmuir monolayer. Closure of such a hole in a fluid layer is driven by the line tension at the hole boundary and the difference in surface pressure within the hole and far outside it. The observed rate of hole closing is close to that predicted by our model using estimates of the line tension obtained by other means, assuming that the …

Linear Inequalities [11th Grade], Maeve Goetz Jun 2006

Linear Inequalities [11th Grade], Maeve Goetz

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

The students will be introduced to linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities. The main understandings that I want to develop in my students are that there are many methods to solving math problems and that solving the problem is not always enough (mathematically correct solutions are not always the best solutions). They will need to analyze the solutions they develop to determine whether or not their answer is reasonable. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of linear equalities by solving them algebraically, graphically, and using a table. Students will compare and contrast linear equations to linear inequalities. They will explore …

Hubungan Antara Kemampuan Spasial Dengan Prestasi Belajar Matematika, Siti Marliah Tambunan

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

A number of the mathematical problem solving are related with visuospatial ability. A good spatial conceptualization is an asset to understand the mathematical concept. Perspective understanding, geometrical shapes, and visual concept relation are crucial skills in spatial ability. These factors are also needed in mathematical performance. This research is intended to test the relationship between spatial abilities and mathematical performance. Data are collected from 220 children (7 to 11 years old) by giving them the spatial ability test which consists of spatial topology, projective, euclidis, and mathematical test. Result shows that there is a significant relationship between total spatial ability, …

The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb May 2006

The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates my experiences as a rural Mississippi secondary mathematics teacher. The culture surrounding accountability testing and rural education as well as student perceptions of my mathematics instruction and classroom management were investigated. With recent educational legislation such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, teachers and students are experiencing education differently than teachers and students of the past. Through this basic interpretive case study, I sought to increase the limited research surrounding student perceptions of rural mathematics instruction and accountability testing and to provide a descriptive image of teaching in this rural school. The students, administrators, …
