Integrated Database For Rapid Mass Movements In Norway, Christian Jaedicke, Karstein Lied, Halvor Juvet, Kalle Kronholm Jun 2006

Integrated Database For Rapid Mass Movements In Norway, Christian Jaedicke, Karstein Lied, Halvor Juvet, Kalle Kronholm

Geohazards

Rapid mass movements include all kinds of slides in geological material, snow or ice. Traditionally, information about such events is collected separately in different databases covering selected geographical regions and event types. In Norway the terrain is susceptible to all types of rapid mass movements ranging from single rocks hitting roads and houses to large avalanches and huge rock falls where entire mountainsides collapse into fjords creating flood waves and endangering large areas. In addition, quick clay slides occur in desalinated marine sediments in south eastern and mid Norway. For the authorities and inhabitants of endangered areas, the type of …

Making Kytc Geotechnical Reports Available On The Web, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Rebecca Wang Jun 2006

Making Kytc Geotechnical Reports Available On The Web, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Rebecca Wang

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Geotechnical Branch of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) prepares technical reports that contain drawings, explanations, and recommendations for road and structure construction projects in Kentucky. These design reports, once complete, also serve as historical reference materials for new projects and are utilized by State contractors, regional transportation offices, as well as the KYTC staff in Frankfort, KY. In order to reduce the support needed to distribute these documents to their constituents, the KYTC required a Web-based system for storing and disseminating the reports. The system developed under this project allows KYTC staff to upload an electronic document from any …

Trust Negotiation For Open Database Access Control, Paul A. Porter May 2006

Trust Negotiation For Open Database Access Control, Paul A. Porter

Theses and Dissertations

Hippocratic databases are designed to protect the privacy of the individuals whose personal information they contain. This thesis presents a model for providing and enforcing access control in an open Hippocratic database system. Previously unknown individuals can gain access to information in the database by authenticating to roles through trust negotiation. Allowing qualified strangers to access the database increases the usefulness of the system without compromising privacy. This thesis presents the design and implementation of two methods for filtering information from database queries. First, we extend a query modification method for use in an open database system. Second, we introduce …

Clustering Of Database Query Results, Kristine Jean Daniels Apr 2006

Clustering Of Database Query Results, Kristine Jean Daniels

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly more users are accessing database systems for interactive and exploratory data retrieval. While performing searches on these systems, users are required to use broad queries to get their desired results. Broad queries often result in too many items forcing the user to spend unnecessary time sifting through these items to find the relevant results. This problem, of finding a desired data item within many items, is referred to as "information overload". Most users experience information overload when viewing these database query results. This thesis shows that users information overload can be reduced by clustering database query results. …

Dbrip: A Highly Integrated Database Of Retrotransposon Insertion Polymorphisms In Humans, Jianxin Wang, Lei Song, Deepak Grover, Sami Azrak, Mark A. Batzer, Ping Liang

Faculty Publications

Retrotransposons constitute over 40% of the human genome and play important roles in the evolution of the genome. Since certain types of retrotransposons, particularly members of the Alu, L1, and SVA families, are still active, their recent and ongoing propagation generates a unique and important class of human genomic diversity/polymorphism (for the presence and absence of an insertion) with some elements known to cause genetic diseases. So far, over 2,300, 500, and 80 Alu, L1, and SVA insertions, respectively, have been reported to be polymorphic and many more are yet to be discovered. We present here the Database of Retrotransposon …

Sgpm: Static Group Pattern Mining Using Apriori-Like Sliding Window, John Goh, David Taniar, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile user data mining is a field that focuses on extracting interesting pattern and knowledge out from data generated by mobile users. Group pattern is a type of mobile user data mining method. In group pattern mining, group patterns from a given user movement database is found based on spatio-temporal distances. In this paper, we propose an improvement of efficiency using area method for locating mobile users and using sliding window for static group pattern mining. This reduces the complexity of valid group pattern mining problem. We support the use of static method, which uses areas and sliding windows instead …

Splash: Systematic Proteomics Laboratory Analysis And Storage Hub, Siaw Ling Lo, You Tao, Qingsong Lin, Shashikant B. Joshi, Maxey Chung, Choy Leong Hew

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the field of proteomics, the increasing difficulty to unify the data format, due to the different platforms/instrumentation and laboratory documentation systems, greatly hinders experimental data verification, exchange, and comparison. Therefore, it is essential to establish standard formats for every necessary aspect of proteomics data. One of the recently published data models is the proteomics experiment data repository [Taylor, C. F., Paton, N. W., Garwood, K. L., Kirby, P. D. et al., Nat. Biotechnol. 2003, 21, 247-254]. Compliant with this format, we developed the systematic proteomics laboratory analysis and storage hub (SPLASH) database system as an informatics infrastructure to support …

A User-Centric Tabular Multi-Column Sorting Interface For Intact Transposition Of Columnar Data, David B. L. Miles Jan 2006

A User-Centric Tabular Multi-Column Sorting Interface For Intact Transposition Of Columnar Data, David B. L. Miles

Theses and Dissertations

Many usability features designed in software applications are not procedurally intuitive for software users. A good example of software usability involves tabular sorting in a spreadsheet. Single-column sorting, activated with a mouse click to a column header or toolbar button, often produces rearranged listings that reduce cognitive organization beyond the sorted column. Multi-column sorting, generated through menu-driven processes, provides derived organization, however, locating feature options through menu-based systems can be confusing. A means to overcome this confusion is prioritized selection of database arrays issued to columnar displays for the purpose of intact transposition of data. This is a unique process …

Research Within The Privacy Regulations: Problems And Solutions For Database Custodians, Ea Mulligan, Wendy Rogers, Annette J. Braunack-Mayer

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

State and Federal legislation governing health information and privacy in Australia is complex and relatively untested, causing confusion amongst database custodians as to what conduct is required. Some database custodians believe that providing privacy will allay public anxiety and consequently support research. Others argue that data managers have become fearful of litigation and that this will restrict the access of researchers to data. Two of the significant ethical issues to be considered are the right to privacy, and whether using information poses a risk to data subjects. Data custodians have sought to address concerns about privacy in two main ways. …

Turkish Journal of Botany

A computer-based database for freshwater algae recorded in Turkey has been established. The first phase of the project involved the selecting of data types available for freshwater algal species occurring in Turkey. Such data were obtained from algal studies previously carried out in various freshwater bodies of the country. Data were then standardized in accordance with "The Central Database of Turkish Herbaria". The database program Access was used for entering data, as this program recognises Turkish characters. Algal data were entered into the database in the following order: division, class, order, family, genus, species, species author, subspecies, subspecies author, variety, …

Discrimination Of Automobile Carpet Fibers Using Multiple Analytical Techniques And The Subsequent Creation Of A Searchable Data, Derek Dorrien Jan 2006

Discrimination Of Automobile Carpet Fibers Using Multiple Analytical Techniques And The Subsequent Creation Of A Searchable Data, Derek Dorrien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forensic fiber examination is an important part of trace evidence analysis. Fibers may be recovered from a crime scene that could link a particular suspect to the scene. Clothing fibers are most frequently encountered but automobile carpeting fibers may also be recovered. An understanding of the frequency of occurrence and the discrimination power of different analytical techniques is needed in order to better establish the evidentiary value of automobile carpet fiber evidence. Seventy-five automobile carpet fiber samples were analyzed using a series of techniques ranging from nondestructive to destructive. These techniques included polarized light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, microspectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared …

A New Economics Of Trademarks, David W. Barnes Jan 2006

A New Economics Of Trademarks, David W. Barnes

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Conventional wisdom holds that trademarks are nothing like other intellectual property. Copyright and patent law are theoretically based in public goods theory and are designed to promote creation and disclosure of original expressions and novel, useful innovations. By contrast, trademarks are private goods and trademark law is designed to promote trade and encourage competition.

This article challenges conventional wisdom by demonstrating that trademarks are a type of public good that contributes to the public stock of useful ideas just as patented and copyrighted works do. This economic perspective suggests, again contrary to conventional trademark theory, that competitive markets fail to …
