Development Of A Studio Art Curriculum For The Concentration Section Of The Advanced Placement Drawing Portfolio, Bonnie R. Lovell

Art and Design Theses

This thesis presents an Advanced Placement curriculum for the concentration section of the Drawing Portfolio. It is intended as a teaching tool to encourage and develop creative strategies related to idea generation and refinement based on creative problem solving, which is essential to the development of an effective concentration. One of the most difficult problems faced by Advanced Placement Studio Art students is idea generation for the artwork related to a central topic for the concentration section of their portfolios. This curriculum introduces lessons based on artist research, brainstorming, synectics, and SCAMPER techniques designed to foster creative idea generation for …

Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann Dec 2006

Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The purpose of this project was to gain a deeper insight into Appreciative Inquiry and to understand possible connections between this philosophy of change and creativity in general and the creative process in particular. The intention of combining a literature research with a practical application was fourfold: Firstly, this approach would provide insight into the philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and its methods and tools. Secondly, equipped with the background knowledge on creativity available to me from the creative studies program and beyond, I expected to discover some parallels and links from AI to creativity during my literature research. Thirdly, …

A New Look At Design Thinking: Research In Progress, Rob Cowdroy, Michael Ostwald, Anthony Williams Nov 2006

A New Look At Design Thinking: Research In Progress, Rob Cowdroy, Michael Ostwald, Anthony Williams

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper reports on work in progress in a programme of highly innovative cross-disciplinary collaborative research into design thinking. This research programme departs from current reductivist theoretical approaches to design including computational and neuroscience models; instead the programme uses empirical methods from behavioural and cognitive psychology, social anthropology and neuropsychology to study elite designers at work. Designers are usually characterised as creative individuals who work alone and autonomously, and design education is almost universally oriented accordingly. In practice, however, designers also typically work in two other key environments: in design teams and in interaction with computers in CAD environments. Pilot …

Questioning Drawing For Designers: Project Work As A Strategy And Examples From The Practice, Maria Vasconcelos, Helena Elias Nov 2006

Questioning Drawing For Designers: Project Work As A Strategy And Examples From The Practice, Maria Vasconcelos, Helena Elias

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Facing the changes of the named “global society and technological revolution”, this paper begins by equating through literature review main competences asked to designers and the way drawing as a discipline can make a contribution in the academic curricula of design courses. Such contribution is also shown by depicting some exercises of drawing and results obtained in practice. The paper considers drawing fundamental for designerly thinking and argues on the importance of project work as a methodology to give drawing a purpose, enriching and enlarging its capacity as a tool for creativity, thinking, and research, problem-solving and self expression. Drawing …

Trends In Protection For Informational Works Under Copyright Law During The 19th And 20th Centuries, Miriam Bitton Oct 2006

Trends In Protection For Informational Works Under Copyright Law During The 19th And 20th Centuries, Miriam Bitton

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The debate over databases protection has failed to identify and discuss some of its most basic and preliminary assumptions, accepting instead many of the historical aspects involved as given. This Article therefore seeks to challenge these underlying assumptions by providing a fresh look at the historical dimension of the debate. One common argument regarding database protection is that the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Feist v. Rural Publications Inc. brought about a dramatic change in the legal landscape, displacing the then-accepted "sweat of the brow" rationale for protecting rights in databases. This Article's historical analysis therefore thoroughly examines the treatment …

All Rights Reserved? Cultural Monopoly And The Troubles With Copyright , Michael Geist Jul 2006

All Rights Reserved? Cultural Monopoly And The Troubles With Copyright , Michael Geist

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

With an increasing ease for one to download, trade and share information, there is also an increasing desire by companies, corporations and private interests to protect their works. In a time where everything can be commoditized and ideas can be bought and sold at a price, a question we must answer is - Who owns our creativity? Must all rights be reserved? This lecture explores the growth of the citizen journalist and the blossoming of independent creativity online. He also examines the concerns with copyright: how lobby groups have consistently pushed for ever stronger rules. Finally, Dr. Geist presents the …

Arts In New Directions: The Development And Application Of A Construct That Uses The Arts To Promote Transformation And Self-Actualization In Health Care And Education/Therapy, Alexxis Avalon Jun 2006

Arts In New Directions: The Development And Application Of A Construct That Uses The Arts To Promote Transformation And Self-Actualization In Health Care And Education/Therapy, Alexxis Avalon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artistic methods to evoke relaxation, spark creativity, and change self-perceptions are already being used by therapists, educators, and scientists. Interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers are developing to create new paradigms that incorporate the use of arts to empower individuals. By describing various connections between the arts and participants, researchers are looking at the expressive arts (including dance, music, drama, poetry, and visual arts) for transformation and self-actualization.The problem is that no construct is available to describe the transformation, "the conscious move from one deep structure of knowledge to another" (Wilber, 2004), that occurs when using the arts in health care and …

The Wheel Of Engagement: Exploring The Connection Between The Brand/Target Relationship, Brain Physiology, Human Psychology And The Laws Of Marketing In An Ever-Changing World., Daniel S. Greenberger

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

What happens when the sciences of brain physiology, human psychology and marketing collide with the science of creativity? Could this generate a massive impact leading to the Holy Grail of marketing—a rare insight into the code for building strong brand/customer relationships? As a veteran copywriter and creative director in the ad industry, my tools for gaining customer insight were limited to traditional research and strategy methodologies such as focus groups, interviews and surveys, and to my gut instincts. Once introduced to the science of creativity, I became curious about certain connections to human behavior—specifically connections between the physiology of the …

Exploring The Affective Nature Of Creativity, Michelle S.J Robert

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project was about exploring and expanding my creative self; it explored how the creative process involved in artistic self-expression can help one reduce stress, increase self-awareness, achieve insight and break down barriers that hinder creativity. The project is based on creativity models and a few art therapy techniques. It contains tangible products of my artwork which include: a visual log, a series of photographs, a note book, a „writing therapy‟ booklet, drawings and a collage. I used a wide variety of materials such as brushes, water color, crayons, chalk pastels, oil pastels, coloring pencils, markers, sketch book, construction paper, …

Creating A Journal Through A Musical Journey, Jenelle E. Papin

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Music has always been an important part of my life. It has helped me through some extremely challenging times. Music has had a profound impact on my feelings, thoughts and moods. I seem to connect with it on a deeper level, which has helped me deal with personal issues that I have endured. Because of the help that I have received from music, based on my own life experiences, I feel that I needed to share this connection with others who may be struggling with life‟s uncertainties as well. Therefore, I will compile a collection of journal entries in which …

The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot Mar 2006

The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot

Theses and Dissertations

Divergence of new and old technologies is a source of tremendous innovation potential. As the dizzying pace of technological innovation accelerates indefinitely into tomorrow, not only do new paths diverge exponentially; doors already opened are increasingly abandoned for the allure of things undiscovered. Mature, late-stage life-cycle products left behind in today's fast-paced world open the floodgates to reinvention. This paper tests the hypothesis that innovativeness can be encouraged through the learning and application of universal innovation principles and processes. The implications of this research area are far-reaching. If innovation can be encouraged, then it can likely be taught. If it …

In 1997, the Kirkpatrick Foundation convened a meeting of faculty from the various arts departments of public and private universities and colleges in Oklahoma. The purpose was to identify resources and possible collaborative opportunities that would ultimately heighten Oklahoma’s cultural education climate. The group continued to meet regularly, and over time friendships and partnerships were developed among campus faculty of singular institutions as well as among faculty across institutional lines.

“The Management Of Creativity”, Managing The Creative Mind: A Business Elective, Peter A. Maresco, John Gerlach Jan 2006

“The Management Of Creativity”, Managing The Creative Mind: A Business Elective, Peter A. Maresco, John Gerlach

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The immediate problem facing the authors was replacing someone with the background and stature of Joseph Abboud with an individual or, as it eventually worked out, four individuals with differing creative backgrounds and levels of success that would be of benefit to the students (in the spring 2006 semester the course was offered to undergraduate business students) enrolled in the course. Replacing Abboud proved to be not as difficult as the authors originally imagined. Within a period of three weeks, four individuals with diverse backgrounds in film, music, sports entertainment, and entrepreneurship were identified and agreed to take part in …

Creativity: A Framework For The Design/Problem Solving Discourse In Technology Education, Theodore Lewis

Publications

Subjects for which aesthetics and creative performance are critical curricular dimensions (such as art, physical education, music, and technology education), and which are accommodative of students across the range of intelligences (Gardner, 1999) are not readily or completely captured by content standards. Therefore content knowledge in these fields that target student achievement as conventionally conceived must be complemented by treatment of more subjective and elusive goals such as the development of connoisseurship, appreciation, or creative insight. With the publication of standards for the subject (International Technology Education Association, 2000), the need for focus upon creativity in technology education has been …

Creativity, Rebecca Ross Jan 2006

Creativity, Rebecca Ross

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Creativity, in its countless forms and expressions, is evident in every aspect of life. The title of one who is deemed to be creative is often reserved for those who wield paintbrushes, cameras, or a well-worn pair of ballet slippers. Yet possessing the quality or power of creating that results from original thought and expression is not limited to college art majors and eccentrics. Creativity plays a role in the life of every person around the globe and has been found to have numerous positive effects. The concrete definition of creativity is the state or quality of being creative; creative …

Creativity = Intelligence + Intuition? The Relationships Between Intuition, Creativity, And Intelligence, Michael E. Battista Jan 2006

Creativity = Intelligence + Intuition? The Relationships Between Intuition, Creativity, And Intelligence, Michael E. Battista

Digitized Theses

The study examined intuition and its relations with intelligence and creativity. Based on anecdotal evidence and past empirical research, it was hypothesized that measures of intuition, including implicit learning, would be related to each other. Furthermore, two hypotheses were explored: First, individual differences in creativity can be predicted by intelligence and intuition, and second, individual differences in intelligence can be predicted by creativity and intuition. Sixty eight participants completed various measures of intuition, an implicit learning task, and tests of creativity and intelligence. Self-report measures of intuition correlated with each other, but not with measures of implicit learning. Some limited …

Copyright, Commodification, And Culture: Locating The Public Domain, Julie E. Cohen Jan 2006

Copyright, Commodification, And Culture: Locating The Public Domain, Julie E. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The relationship between increased commodification and the public domain in copyright law is the subject of considerable controversy, both political and theoretical. The paper argues that beliefs about what legal definition the public domain requires depend crucially on implicit preconceptions about what a public domain is. When considered in broader historical context, the term public domain has a specific set of denotative and connotative meanings that constitute the artistic, intellectual, and informational public domain as a geographically separate place, portions of which are presumptively eligible for privatization. This idea meshes well with the current push toward commodification in copyright. The …

Fostering Imaginative Expression In Elementary Art Students: A Descriptive Study Of Teacher Strategies, Julia Robinson Bargo Jan 2006

Fostering Imaginative Expression In Elementary Art Students: A Descriptive Study Of Teacher Strategies, Julia Robinson Bargo

Theses and Dissertations

The students in my elementary art classes did not seem to be creating for themselves. They seemed to have the understanding there was only one correct answer in art class, and the art teacher knew what that answer was. By way of research I have found ways to create an atmosphere in my art room that promotes imagination and self expression in children, thus fostering a free and creative reaction from my students. Through understanding how and why one uses their imagination, an art teacher can enhance a student's ability to build and use his or her knowledge base. I …
