No One Flunks Museum: An Overview Of Learning Theory And Its Implementation In Formal And Informal History Education, Nichole D. Smith
No One Flunks Museum: An Overview Of Learning Theory And Its Implementation In Formal And Informal History Education, Nichole D. Smith
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The transition of museums from institutions for the knowledgeable to places for those seeking knowledge has brought about a need for those educating in museums to better understand the ways in which people learn. This paper introduces and explains theories, psychological and educational, that are applicable to learning such as Constructivism, Multiple Intelligences, and the Contextual Model of Learning. Observations of informal and formal history and social studies lessons or programs presented to students ages 3-16 provide the framework for understanding how well these theories of learning are being implemented in the museum. Comparison of history museum programs (informal education) …
Chironomid Hemoglobin Genetic Diversity As An Indicator Of The New Jersey Hackensack Meadowlands Wetland Health, Lene Marie De Coursin Jacobs
Chironomid Hemoglobin Genetic Diversity As An Indicator Of The New Jersey Hackensack Meadowlands Wetland Health, Lene Marie De Coursin Jacobs
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Kearny Marsh located within the Hackensack Meadowlands is a freshwater wetland impacted by multiple environmental stressors from human activity. The marsh is located in the northeastern New Jersey metropolitan area. Chironomid larvae, aquatic larvae of midge fly, were analyzed from two Kearny Marsh sample sites, W9 and W22. A previous sediment analysis and toxicity study characterized heavy metal contaminants the marsh. The data results were applied in this thesis study to determine the correlation between environmental stressors and chironomid genetic diversity. Site W9 sediment was impacted by severe levels of total heavy metal contamination, whereas site W22 had just below …

Menstrual Cycle Phase And Gender Effects On Hippocampally Modulated Sensorimotor Processes: Classical Eyeblink Conditioning And Ppi Of The Acoustic Startle Response, Jacqueline L. Holloway
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Experimental animal research studies have demonstrated that hormones affect neurological physiology and morphology in areas such as the striatum, hypothalamus, and hippocampus. How the specific effects of estrogen and progesterone are manifested behaviorally in humans, however, is not yet understood. The current study tested sensorimotor responding and simple motor learning in three groups of women - follicular/low hormone, luteal/high hormone, oral contraceptive - and men. Using PPI as an operational measure, this study was designed to expand limited findings which report menstrual cycle phase effects on pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response (ASR), a direct measure of sensorimotor …
Leftist Populism And Sustainable Development In Latin America, Carina Kjelstad
Leftist Populism And Sustainable Development In Latin America, Carina Kjelstad
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Sustainable development still remains the best option to secure a viable future. Why are some leaders more prone to implement sustainable development policies than others, and does the leaders' political orientation affect such decision-making? Leaders are often faced with constraints that make them choose policies that do not necessarily lead to sustainability from an ecological point of view. This thesis addresses these issues by examining two case studies that involve an analysis of the sustainable development policies implemented by President Lula in Brazil and President Chavez in Venezuela and the constraints that have hindered them in doing so.
Somatostatin Regulates The Extracellular Regulated Kinase Cascade Of Human Rheumatoid Arthritis Synoviocytes, Frances Mae West
Somatostatin Regulates The Extracellular Regulated Kinase Cascade Of Human Rheumatoid Arthritis Synoviocytes, Frances Mae West
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Somatostatin (SRIF, somatotropin release inhibitory factor) is a ubiquitously expressed neuropeptide, interacting with cells via five SRIF receptor subtypes (sst.-sst.), belonging to the guanine nucleotide binding protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. SRIF receptors have been well documented for their ability to inhibit cell proliferation and secretion in a variety of animal tissues. Over the past l S years, pre-clinical and clinical studies implicate that SRIF and SRIF analog therapy improve symptoms in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, we investigate SRIF's effects on intracellular signaling in the synovium, the cellular layer that lines synovial joints, using in vitro …
Neo-Populism And Political Mass Communication In Latin America: Press Freedom, Media Access, And Democracy, Nagidmy Marquez Acosta
Neo-Populism And Political Mass Communication In Latin America: Press Freedom, Media Access, And Democracy, Nagidmy Marquez Acosta
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This paper studies the relationship between neo-populism and political mass communication in Latin America. Through a quantitative assessment, this research aims to examine the role that media politics plays in strengthening democracy and neo-populism in eighteen Latin American countries. In particular, the author examines two key elements of the political mass communication concept: press freedom and media access. Can neo-populism be understood without an assessment of media politics? Do political pressure and control of media content, combined with widespread access to different channels of mass communication strengthen neo-populism in Latin American? The author concludes that while Latin American countries are …

A Validation Study Of The Administrator Data Use Survey, Francis Nicholas Sheboy
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The purpose of this study was to create an original instrument, the Administrator Data Use Survey (ADUS), to assess practicing school administrators' perceptions of the importance of data to school improvement, the importance of data to their position, and the degree to which they feel their graduate preparation in educational administration adequately prepared them for the data use demands of their position. Validation panels were used to assess construct, content, criterion, and face validity of the ADUS. In addition, factor analysis was utilized for construct validation. The ADUS was sent to a random sampling of practicing administrators from New York …

A Study Of New Jersey's Assessment And Accountability System For Students With Disabilities And Its Impact On Special Education Services, Julie Moul Gardner
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Use of high stakes assessment for special needs students is a key element in the current educational reform movement. State assessment systems use these tests to determine and report school accountability scores, distribute school funding, and assess school rewards and sanctions. The impact of including these students' test score on the district accountability reports has not yet been determined. Directors of special services, the primary individuals for supervising or coordinating district special education programs, have an extensive understanding of administrative and functional knowledge of special education services and are therefore able to provide insight concerning the impact of accountability on …
The Creation Of A Communication Guide For The Project Manager Implementing A Student Information System, Kimberly A. Momballou
The Creation Of A Communication Guide For The Project Manager Implementing A Student Information System, Kimberly A. Momballou
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The objective of this research project is to create a communication guide for the project manager responsible for implementing a student information system on a college or university campus. The implementation of a student information system may be among the most difficult challenges that are faced in higher education due to the sensitivity of the data involved, the number of employees that will be involved in the project and the potential impact on the entire campus community. Most implementations take far greater than twelve months to complete and have been known to last for several years causing a substantial strain …
